Last hope, Any of your cars come with 3.42's 14in tires and a 700r4?

This is got me ***** off. I cant find the correct speedo gears for my bird, I was wondering if any of you guys have 14in wheels, 3.42 gears and a 700r4? If so do any of you happen to know the tooth count on the speedo gears? Apperantly none of the early V8's 14in wheels, came with a 700r4 and 3.42's and I was wondering if any six's did? Ah the price for keeping the stock 14in wheels. Forgot to mention the dealer is useless and Ive tryed many different tranny boards with no luck.

Thanks!

I know of the soft tissue damage real well.
I do hope you're doing well.
Tranny, no help for ya.
14 wheels? Now that I don't know about.
I would guees that the 4 cylinders had that combo, tho.
Dealers can't help ya?

Well, I have that combo, unfortunatly I have no idea what the speedo gears are...

Sorry bud.

P.S. You know the fact that you have 14inch rims has nothing to do with it, right? as long as you keep the stock tire height you'll be fine, just ask for the speedo gears for a 700R with 3.42's. Sure a 15 inch rim is bigger, but the overall sidewall height is smaller, keeping the same effective tire height... it's when you start changing from that stock height things become problematic.

Best of luck.

Thanks for the replys guys! I gotta find the owners manual and check stock tire dimentions, its been a long time since ive had stock size tires on anything but since the tires on the bird were on it when I bought it I think they might be the proper size.
The dealers are dip****Z all they have behind the counter (no offense) is women. I can never seem to hit them at the right time so I can talk to someone that knows more than just, add gas turn key and go

At least with the Camaro gone it gives me the excuse to resume the hunt for a 65 Malibu. It would be real nice to find one in need of an engine and tranny other wise perfect. yep dream on Clint.

I havve that combo, and I have the same answer as Xenodrgn. go to www.thetirerack.com , they might have tive tire dimensions there. I also think one of my back issues of high performance potiac has a listing of speedo gears for the 700-r4, but it may be for only 200-4r. will look later, I'm geeting ready for work

Well, all the 85-89 2.8's with the 700r4 came with 3.42 gears, if that helps.

Tire dimensions, using P215/65r15 as an example:

P = passenger
215 = "section width in millimeters". Divide by 25 to get section width in inches.

65 = "aspect ratio". This is a percentage, so put a decimal point in front to make it "0.65". Then, multiply that by the section width to get the SIDEWALL height.

15 = rim size, inches. (So why's section height in mm? Don't know.) This is used for calculating TIRE height; no conversion necessary.

TIRE HEIGHT:

1. Multiply the SIDEWALL height by two (top & bottom sidewalls).
2. Add the RIM height to that figure.

EXAMPLE:

P215/65r15 tire...

215/25 = 8.6 inch wide tire
(8.6)*(.65) = 5.59 inch SIDEWALL height
15 = 15 inch RIM height

TIRE HEIGHT: 2*(5.59) + 15 = 11.18" + 15" = 26.18" tall tire

P225/60r15 tire is 9" wide, 25.8" tall.
P235/50r16 tire is 9.4" wide, 25.4" tall.

P275/60r15 tire (my rear tires) is 11 wide, 28.2" tall.

Actually, it should be 215/25.4 => 8.46 inches. and the overall height is 26.00 inches.

225/60/15 = 25.62in
235/60/15 = 26.10
235/50/16 = 25.25

I am way too picky

I have yet to find an owners manual for sale for my 1985 Firebird.
I had better luck finding the Helms Shop manual. The owner manuals I find at swap meets cost more than buying the 85 Manual NEW from Helms. They go for $10 new.
But, not in my $$ funds yet.

Okay, so that tire/wheel combo is 26.22 inches tall (or 26.02 inches tall by Dale's standards! ), so that's about the same as a P215/65r15 tire on a 15" wheel, so you could yank the speedo gears from any 85-89 2.8 f-body with an automatic.

I finnaly found the page in the owners manual The car should have 205/70/R14's and upon another close look the tires they are 235 60 R14s not 65. Im gonna have to stop in the dealer tomorrow and get the correct gears.
