TBI is basically a carburetor that only flows air. A fuel injector (or two) is positioned above the throat of the carb, and sprays fuel downward.
TPI (very similar to our MPFI), as you know, has one fuel injector per cylinder, and the fuel injectors fire right into the intake manifold.
'Course, TBI would be cheaper all around... I guess? I mean an engine still has the basics; a camshaft, distributor, exhaust, etc... i'm sure prices for a TBI cam and TPI cam are pretty damn similar, same for the rest of the car. I don't think those cost/maintance questions can be applied... you could argue that a TBI is cheaper because it only has one injector- but that injector fires all the time, so TPI might be cheaper, since 8 injectors (or 6) share the load...
[edit] Oh, but as opposed to boneyard prices, a junkyard would charge you less for a TBI system than a TPI. Is that what you meant?

TBI is basically the first experiment for TPI. TBI you can spend lots of $$$ to get power, but your better off with TPI. larger intial expense, but easier to work on and parts are more readily available.
ME?
Put a carb on it?
Why?
The associated items to go with a non-Fuel Injected car.
Gas lines, tank mods, fuel pumps, extra wiring.
YES, THEY MAKE KITS,
But those kits do carry "hefty" price tag.
Add it up, many times a CARB set up will be just fine.
Yet of your two choices, TBI= Torque for the money.
Camshaft design related issue, poor heads.
TPI= power and performance. Worth it.
That's why we like our MPFI engines.
These engines with a carb, SUCK.
I know I got one!
I'll be swapping in a 3.4 into my S-10 Blazer, but power limited by intake design.
I'm gonna get a complete engine (intake/injectors/etc) for future upgrade, but drive it with CARB until I pass smog this end of year. Then swap on the FI set up for 2 years more fun!
