Timing

My uncle said he can't get the timing cuz it's up against the firewall and that he needs some sort of a special wrench or something, The timing needs to be set at 10 degrees and it's way off. Also when I rev up the car, When you put your hand above the air cleaner hose right where the air cleaners are, you can hear a bang when you rev it, It's like a backfire what's that??? Also one more thing, As soon as I get off the gas, The battery light comes on in my car but it's really dim, But when I get back on it, It goes off. Someone help me, By the way I am back

Good to see you back.

The backfireing noise is intake backfire. It happens when the timing is off, or when there is a vacuum line leak. Or even when there is a bit of both. I would say everyone on this board has had this problem at some point.

Now onward.

The bolt he seaks to losen the distribitor is best reached with a 3/8 rachet a lon extension and a 3/8 universal and a 15mm socket. I just set the timing on my car the other day and I did not use the 3/8 universal I got onto the bolt with a 3.8 rachet and a lont extension and the 15mm socket.

10* is good if the car does not have alot of miles. I along with others would recommend you set it at about 13-15*. As time goes on the chain stretches therefore making the timing a little off.

The charging light. I am not too sure what if could be. But maybe the plugin to the alternator is shot, and needs to be replaced. But I really am not too sure on this, so I hope someone else can help.

Good luck.

Thanks alot man, Yea we know the timing is off we know that for a fact. Tomorrow I am gonna change the spark plugs and the wires, And we're gonna adjust the timing, I think my uncle said the timing was at 14 but I asked the Chevy dealer and they said it should be 10 or 11

Yeah 10 is the correct setting. I was just saying alot of us had more problems at 10*, so we bumped ours up to 14*. But yours may work best at 10*; mine has 155000 miles on it so it works best at about 14*.

Did you uncle unplug the EST wire when he checked the timing. Its on the passenger side of the car near the firewall, and tan wire with a black strip. If not your timing will be way out. Just checking.

That's why I told ya, replace the timing chain.
The swappign engine is in your hand and it was worth the $30-50 total.
Unbolt the distributor, crank it towards the firewall. Idle will smooth out, then.
Get rid of the car, sounds like it's gonna be hurting soon.
Meaning, you've got alot of tracing down work to do to fix leaks and wires and such.
