Bringing the bird back to life

I decided i wanna have atleast the same HP and perfromance the same way it came out of the factory brand new. Here are the things im gonna get:

Shift kit
Engine rebuild kit
Injectors
Plugs + Wires
Coil
all Stainless Steel hoses
Hedman Hedders
Doulble roller chain with gears

Now the help part is what companys make the best part (ones i mentioned above) for my car thats within my budget. I already know hedman makes hedders for my car so that i got. The car has 213,000 miles and my budget $650. I know there's alot of knowledgable people here (TomP) and when it comes to V6 issues u guys got it down pat.
Also could u run down a price after each part i mentioned and part #, i know i could look in a catalog myself but when it comes to ordering stuff i always screw up my order cause believe it or not im still learning about my third gen, and if i ask a parts person they always try to screw u by selling u the most expensive part or recommend something that might mot even be right. Thanks alot for ur help guys, I was starting to feel pity for my bird cause my GA was so much better and faster but i haven't given up on her and wanna improve her too. Thanks again

650 isn't gunna do it...

You could always tear it down yourself... have everything aligned and honed, basic head job and then order the rebuild kit for whatever oversize you end up going... but that busts you budget already...

I'd just go with doing all your own stuff, work with what you've got and make the best of what you can... a tuneup... make sure the computer is seeing the info right and make sure it doesn't leak anything, after that just stick to inexpensive litle stuff... it adds up after a while...

I see you have headers on your list, these are not made for our 2.8s so you can scratch that off.

Shift kit depends on the kit. 100-200
Engine rebuild kit again depends on kit 3-700
Injectors depends. dealer 80 a pop. Ebay 8 for 50
Plugs + Wires plugs .99 ea-7.00 ea. Wires 19.99 econo-70 for good ones.
Coil 39.99 MSD Summit. GM Remote 2 plug.
all Stainless Steel hoses HA 4-8 bucks a foot. plus ends.
Hedman Hedders NON existant. Good luck finding. IF found... 150-350. Mine... $150
Doulble roller chain with gears 59.99. PAW

Re: Bringing the bird back to life

I do think you could find these part #s on your own.. man, nobody wants to work anymore, eh? That's alright, lets edit this and see what I can come up with:

Shift kit: Avoid the B&M kits, go for the TransGo... your trans will last longer and work better. Also, don't put a shift kit in unless your trans is in good shape, or it'll kill the trans. You could put in the B&M 4-3 kickdown kit, there's no problems with that one. Transgo 700r4 kit is TRG-700 for $130.

Engine rebuild kit: Can't really price this for you, you'd need to tear your motor down to see what's up. You might need machining, you might not, you might need new pistons, you might not, etc.

Injectors: Pull them, and have them cleaned by Rich Jensen at http://www.cruzinperformance.com . If you want more fuel pressure, buy an adjustable fuel pressure regulator... your mods don't really dictate having extra fuel. I had a spare set sent to Rich, with less miles on them; that way I could drive around while he cleaned 'em.

Plugs + Wires: AC plugs, for our '86's, are the R42TS, to be gapped at 0.045". You can get a set of Accel 8mm plug wires from http://www.northernautoparts.com (yep, not Summit!) for $25.

Coil: From Summitracing.com, MSD Blaster 2, #MSD-8202 for $30, or Blaster SS #MSD-8207 for $35. You can leave your GM coil in it's original spot as a "spare". Biggest problem with using these coils is finding a spot to mount them. Yes they'll work on our cars.

Stainless Steel hoses: If you're really on a budget, buy the Russell hose sleeving kit. Looks just like stainless. Summit's online site doesn't list the Russell kit, if you can get a part #, go for it, since these kits come with enough sleeving to do the lower rad hose. But the Spectre kit is only $30. Here's a direct catalog link to the hose kits with the colored ends: http://store.summitracing.com/defaul...rchtype%3Decat

Doulble roller chain with gears: Summit, $90. I don't know the part # offhand, when I bought it, I had Summit look it up. You don't -really- need the double roller chain; you're looking at (best) 1-2 HP, but you'll get a bit more accurate timing, and the chain would stretch less = last longer. But a stock timing chain with crank gear and cam sprocket would be fine. I think Karl has a price # & part # for this thru Northern Auto. Or you could just order one thru http://www.expressautoparts.com .

For your $650 budget.
Find a lower milage engine, slip it in, add new chain, water pump, rebuild distributor, clean up fuel system (repair), Get new muffler or new CC (depending on wear of either items).
Northern 800-831-0884
I got a Speed Pro chain & Air Tex water pump, Fel Pro $50-ish delivered.
Sell all left over parts on ebay to recoup looses$$$$.
I paid $800 for/including my 3.4, swap, gaskets & etc., except gas to milage.
I sold left over stuff on ebay

why tomp are u against B&M... i have one in my car... any good tranny guy can fix those things that come in the transgo kit ...w/o having the kit
all it is is some springs and some spacers more than the B&M .i have a 30 bucks B&M still going fine...

if u want some necksnapping shifts dont even get the shift kit ...get a corvette servo, and a .500/.471 boost valve more number = better for .500 valve u also need a .27 something reverse boost valve...and i can bet ull get the snapping shifts that a shift kit does..when u floor it otherwise itll drive like mostly stock

the shift kit will give u snappier shifts at anything over 3000RPM

but remember high mileage TRANNY with shift kit will be ruined no matter what shift kit u put in there...

and camaro_hunter_d lol man injectors @ a delaer is not 80 bucks ....but something like 230 a piece lol u know i changed mine and i checked with vic koenig chevy... thats what they stated/...

and i forgot to add...

the vette servo was 12 bucks or so...
and the boost valve was anotehr 12 bucks..
shift kit was 30 bucks B&M
tranny filter was 5 bucks
misc trans fluid expenses

plus the 100 i paid to a tranny mechanic to put it in...

thats if ur tranny is in good shape else u also have rebuild costs involved

lol... i didnt pull it outta any corvette...

when GM made the cars witht the same 700R4 some parts in the 'vette and high perf Z28s were different...

one of the things was the servo..which is smaller in size so has more apply pressure or ratherr faster apply ...

and the line pressure is controlled by the Boost valve which in our cars is much less than the 'vette...

these can be found on ebay...i bought it from a website i cant remember but ill post it as soon as i get it ...

GM selss the servos too for like 30 bucks and the valve too..

ebay usuallly u find them from 12 bucks for the servo...

I'm not against B&M, just the $30 shift kit. I put one in my car, too! The trans guys prefer the TransGo kit, because it gives you firmer shifts more "eloquently" than the B&M one. The B&M one is made for hard shifts. The TransGo costs more because it does more, and will increase the longevity of the trans.

For instance, they say that B&M has us redrill a hole (can't remember for what) in the separator plate TOO LARGE, which causes other problems.

Plus, I not only have that B&M Shift Improver Kit (stage 2), I also have a B&M 4-3 kickdown valve, B&M Megashifter, and B&M Supercooler. So I'm not against B&M, the kit does work, but after being through 2 dead trannies, and running (now) on a trans that'll die soon, is it worth the risk? Hell no.

lol man,
onlything im saying is that more parts is not always better...

u can put the B&M urself ..but the trasngo is a tough job for us (not for the tranny geeks though)

and trust me when u drill larger holes in the seperator plate all u have to do is to increase the line pressure...= New boost valve which i have..

and my friends 94 blazer has had a B&M for like 2 years now ...and no problems yet..

the one thing in the transgo kit that u can do urself is the sticky valve fix which is just a right size spring inside the place where teh TV cable ends inside the Tranny...
