25th Anniversary Daytona 500 Trans Am coming soon
I posted a while back about possibly getting a daytona 500 trans am. Well my father talked to the owner of the salvage yard and he is going to give it to us . All he wants is the posi rear. It is definately a project car . I now have a 13 year old foster son with ADHD ( what a handfull ) . maybe this project will help him learn something and keep him occupied. He loves sports cars so that should help.
Oh yeah the tech part:
I am going to look for another firebird for parts , are all the rears interchangeable for example v6 compared to v8 .
and will a auto tranny out of a mid 80s v8 monte carlo work in our f-bodies .

80's montes use 200's... yes they'd be better for drag racing, but unless you want to fabricate a torque arm, crossmember, and custom driveshaft, they won't work. Also I'd expect some customization with the VSS also.
Not worth the trouble.

Good luck on the project, ICD55! And if you find a 4cyl 2.5l 82-85 F-body in the junkyards, with a manual trans, it probably has a 3.73/open/drum rear, just like the '84 Camaro H.O. And yes, all rear axles are the same strength.
All '89-up axles (v6 included) received 28 spline axleshafts, which made them stronger than the '82-'88 axleshafts (26 spline). If you find an 89-up axle with rear discs, the 89-up rear calipers are designed much better than the recall'd 82-88 rear calipers.

converting to disks is easy. I am looking at swapping on LS1 rear disks, not the axle just the disks for about 200 bucks.. tech article on this board check it out. Need backing plates.. calipers, disks, and an ebrake cable.
