my 82 trans am calls for 255/55/15 , i check tirerack and they dont have anything . Where can i get them and what diameter are they ?Thanks guys /.
don't know where to get them, but the diameter is 26.04" tall
The stock size should be 215 65 15. 255 55 15 would be a nice size for an 8" wide rim, but I don't think that is a size that was ever made.

yea, i've done some research, and that tire size would be a perfect diameter, to keep your speedo ok, sounds like that's why you chose it eh? but unfortunately it doesn't exist....
255/60 should be ok.
PS. Anyone think it'd be ok to strap 255/60 on a 7" wide wheel?

They’re a bit wide for a 7” wheel from an optimum handling perspective, but they still work well, they’re probably my favorite size on stock 15” rims on these cars. This old pic of my ’83 TA has them on the back:

i know 255/55/15 sounds bug but thats what my mse ta call for , i need new tires and i cant find any for them . yep the tires are 255 55 15 hpr OWL firestone radial tires.
Where exactly are you getting that that size is “called for?”
I’d love to see some documentation, like a picture of the door tag on the car showing that tire size/inflation pressure… I know my ’83 WS6 car specified 215 65 15’s
It’s not that I don’t believe that you don’t have something/someone telling you that’s the case, but the rest of us (at least I am) surprised to see something that as far as I know never existed specified. Also, what wheels did that car come with/what width rim?

i have 275/60/15's on a 7" wheel. i know it's stretching it, but the car isn't made to carve corners. look at pic in sig.
i picked up a set of wheels at the local scrap yard. It has 255/60's on it i believe on the 15 inch wheels i'll get a picture tomorrow if i remember. they have to much of a bubble though. And i don't believe they are safe that's why they are getting removed as soon as i can afford a decent set of all season tires for my 15's. this is the best picture i can get until i can get one tomorrow
83 Crossfire TA - well this is what my mecham trans am calls for , heres some paper for you since you dont believe . I dont lie about stuff like this !!!!!

Wow! That's definately interesting.
I looked for a 255/55/15 tire before as well and couldn't ever find one. If someone did make one back then, they aren't made in that size anymore.

Yea, I agree… that is interesting… like I said, as far as I know that’s a tire size that was never made but would be a nice one for our cars.
Do you have a better scan of that info sheet and some better pictures/of that car/wheels? What size are the wheels on it?

And again like I already said, it’s not that I don’t believe that you have documentation of it (obviously, you showed some), but I’m still not that sure that the car was actually delivered with that size on it because I don’t know that it was ever actually made (maybe a limited production run or something?)
AAMOF, looking at your cardomain site, barring a better picture, it looks like it has the same turbofin wheels that my ’83 TA had on it which are 15x7 (they actually measure a little wider then that), which I would say are too narrow to really work well with a 255 55 (I liked the 255 60’s on those rims, but really they needed an 8” or wider rim)
well my dads 77 trans am has 275 70 15's on 7 inch rims and they look fine and it handles fine . I check the rear tires that are crap and that are on it now and they are 215 75 15 , they are way tall 27.2 tall . I guess if i got something id get 255 60 15
so has anyone found 255 55 15s yet.

That's a 27" tire as well. If you want to go smaller you might want to check out something like a 235/60/15 [26.1"].Originally posted by 18inchboyds

Here's a formula to help you figure it out:
Height in inches = ((tire width in mm/25.4) * (aspect ratio as %) * 2) + (wheel diameter)
Ex. 235/60/15
Tire width [235] in mm = 235
Aspect ratio [60] in % = .6
Wheel diameter = 15
Height = ((235/25.4)(.6)(2)) + 15 = 26.1"

Taller sidewalls are more forgiving of narrow rims. FWIW, 275 70 15’s would be over 30” tall, it would be taller then a lot of truck tires. 275 60 15 is actually a fairly common tall/big car tire which is about 28” tall, and works OK on a 7” rimOriginally posted by 18inchboyds

ooops , they are 275 60 15 . they are tall though , but his car has 4..10 gears and no od so it makes up for it .

The '82 Sport Coupe i just bought has 245/60R14s on it. Looks weird with those. They look better than stock though. I believe that stock is supposed to be 195/75R14 or 205/70R14.

Check with Big Brand Tire Co. I know my local shop carry that size.

Not safe? Chevrolet themselves factory-fitted 275/60R15s to 15x7" wheels from '90-'93 on the 454SS trucks, and from '91-'96 on the C1500 Sport pickups.Originally Posted by 87CIZ

Why is it that every forum is opposed to reviving dead threads?
