I need info on tires.
Hello Third gen owners,
sorry i wasn't sure what message board i should put this under.
I was wondering if someone might know the biggest size tire i can fit under my 1987 camaro. I want to get the biggest size tire i can under there that go with my 17x9 rims without rubbing or cutting anything.
Please comment back.

i've worked at a tire shop for several years and have had alot of experience with this type of situation tire size with rim width. i came up with a calculation before and i just remembered it.
RIM WIDTH + 2 x 25.4 = APROXIMATE TIRE WIDTH (MM)
7 inch rim = 215/225
8 inch rim = 245/255
9 inch rim = 275/285
11 inch rim= 315

I know a 315/40/17 will fit under the weel wheels with a slight modification on inner lip on rear fender--a little careful hammering in lip will give the clearance needed. Now how that tire will look on a 9 inch wheel?

i'd like to see the person trying to mount a 315/40/17 on a 9 inch wheel, and if they do get it on, the pressure from the bead tucked so close together on a small rim, and mixed with the air pressure could pop the bead over the rim anytime, and that wont be a pretty picture while you are driving
