there would be no interference with that tire and a lowered car, no reason to change, besides it would mess up your speedometer. The only rim damage issues i could see, is if you use a much narrower tire, and at that point you would be more susceptible to curb rash

What kind of backspacing do you have? As it is, the stock 16 x 8s have less backspacing than the rears. Making the rears having a shallower dish.

How are the roads where you live? For sure, the more you lower the profile of your tires the more of a shock the wheels will have to endure as you ride over bumps and pot holes. Also, when lowering the vehicle keep in mind that the shocks will have less travel and therefore less dampening (read rougher ride). If you're going to do it (you'll love how the car looks afterward) spend the money on quality shocks (tokiko, Koni) to go with the lowering springs. You don't want to wind up with stress fractures in the chassis. Unless you are driving on silky smooth roads I would be cautious about going to less than a 45 profile. Jon

Why do you want to lower the profile of the tire?
There is nothing to be gained by this...remember that if you drop the car and reduce the tire profile there will be the same size gap as there is now!
Also as 86TA stated, the speedo will be out as well. If the intention of dropping the caris to fill out the wheel well and reduce the gap then stay with a 50 series tire.

That I know of, there are no comparable width tires of a lower profile series. A 235/45/16 is only marginally shorter(roughly .2") but is also 10mm skinnier. 40 series or lower for 16" sizes usually max out at around a 215 width, thus would look/handle like garbage, as they would be too skinny for a 8" wide wheel.
You can lower these cars low enough so that they handle/ride like crap and bottom out on just about everything, all while maintaining a 50 series tire, so even if there were sizes available, I can't see a reason to run them.
