a question for the guys with 20s or 22s

ok before I start getting flamed I want to tell everyone a few facts..I have an 91 Camaro rs 3.1 68k that I plan on maybe driving 3x a week so its basically all show in stock form I mean it has a nice paint job and cosmetics. Currently I have an 1978 cordoba on 22s heres an link http://www.cardomain.com/ride/3131452. The rims on the cordoba are 22x9.5 (35mm offset) dvinci rims with both mopar and camaro bolt patterns

I want to remove the rims as I just installed a new srt 8 6.1 hemi and transmission(from a wrecked 07 charger) into the car and I added some forged hre 18s this combo brings the car to a total of 3680 lbs so I want this to be my performance vehicle and the camaro to be my just hang out and cruise vehicle. Now that the backstory is complete here are my questions:

I dont want to add 22s all around to my camaro I plan on purchasing 2 of the above rims in 20x8.5 in the lowest offset which is 15mm and having the 22x9.5 on the rear I dont want to have these rims go to waste and I dont want to ever put them back on the cordoba.

Question 1: will an 8.5 wide and 9.5 wide inch rim fit on the front and rear

question 2: I know the offset will have to be equal to zero so do i have to buy an 35mm spacer for the rear of the 22 inch rims and 15mm for for the front 20 inch rim or has anyone actually been able to get away with a higher mm?

question 3: whats the most backspacing can I have

question 4: what is the maximum tire size ever used for a 20 inch wheel rim or and 22 inch on a camaro without scrubbing?

Thanks for everyones help and sorry to the people that like 18s and smaller those rims are great but this is a v6 auto in the first place in stock form its all show, and i even prefer the front be a little higher because everyone with a camaro knows the ground effects is a b*tch to not scratch. Thanks for everyones help drive safe.

Re: a question for the guys with 20s or 22s

most people here dont like wheels larger than 18 or maybe 19" because they atart to look out of place with the rest of the car, its like putting wagon wheels on it.

The width of the rims will cause no issues. The fronts at 8.5" wide should have 5" of back spacing, the rears at 9.5 should have between 5.5 and 6". Tire height is where you can get into trouble, especially with a 22" rim. The stock size in 25.7". In the front i would not go any larger than that, it will start to rub on you. The rear is a little more forgiving, you can probably fit a 28" tall tire in there, but the back of the car will have to sit high.

If you want a stock size on the rear, thats where the problems arise. The tires sidewall will be so small that you will damage or destroy the rim if you hit a pothole, and the ride quality will be awful.

I have seem 20"s done well on these cars, but after that it just starts to look like absolute crap. A couple guys here have 19/20 combos or 20's and pull it off well, i dont know their screen names offhand.

My opinion and suggestion, if you must have large wheels, keep it to 20" max on these cars.

i dont feel that this is a good look, i believe these are 22's, maybe 24's

Re: a question for the guys with 20s or 22s

From my stand-point, I don't see the use of such large wheels. The weight of each wheel is insane- it does a good job of decreasing acceleration, gas mileage, ride quality, the rim's survivability of hitting anything, while increasing the braking distance of the car, unsprung weight, rotating mass, and not to mention the cost of the wheels/tires. I know cars today are designed for such things, but these cars weren't.
Just my view on things.

both those cars have 24s on it and looks ridonkulous....I would never even have considered 22s on the rear till I saw this camaro from a car show but most people have irocs I dont know if its because ebay has them cheap or they think its the best big rim setup for the car?

Re: a question for the guys with 20s or 22s

The largest you can go on a third gen and still preserve the wheels and ride quality is 18". Anything bigger does not look or work right.

A 20" wheel would need a 245-30-20 tire to work correctly, way too low profile for real world use.

Re: a question for the guys with 20s or 22s

hey guys thanks for not flaming me well if it will really ride that horrible then I guess I wont add the bigger rims and maybe just settle on some 18s and sell my 22s. I mean my cordoba rode fine but then again its a big 70s car.

I wasn't trying to flame you, and I don't think anyone else flammed you either. Just pointing out the reasons I don't think such large wheels are a good idea. A flaming usually involves name calling and such things lol. At the end of the day, it's you car, so do what you want.
What was the sidewall size of the Cordoba?

Re: a question for the guys with 20s or 22s

yeah I know you didnt flame me I see other forums where questions like this start up all kind of crazy insults about hip hop videos and donks and stuff..but the cordoba actually had toyo proxes 255/35/22 front and 285/35/22 rear with a new tie rod ends ball joints and control arm bushings and it rode smooth as hell for 22s but then again i had the tires inflated to 43 psi all the time. I hate cutting or rubbing and thankfully with those big fenderwalls I didnt have to deal with that. These are also the lightest chrome 22s I could get from Dvinci and they still come in at a whopping 50+ lbs each. So performance wise its still not ideal for something pushing 445 hp like the srt with no emissions crap so im adding hre 18s that weigh 20 lbs each

Re: a question for the guys with 20s or 22s

Well, the suspensions on older cars will probably give you a better ride than a 3rd gen will. Being an older design unibody sports car, they'll ride rougher than most cars once you install larger wheels, suspension mods. The road noise these cars convey make it seem much worse than it is to boot. My car handles very well, but on rough roads it's really leaves alot to be desired. Just food for though. You can always install the large wheels and see what you think.

Re: a question for the guys with 20s or 22s

I AGREE!
there is a reason why we got away from long spoke wheels, even with air inflated tires. THEY RIDS HARD - ALMOST LIKE NO RUBBER AT ALL.
those big pimp rims give you almost no air to absorbe the small bumbs that shocks dont take care of. you want the kidneys of a 50's long haul truck driver, then go ahead and use them.
anyone ever see a slow motion picture of a tire on the road. it flexes, absorbing the shock of the road. that is why strong sidewalls is a must.
this "pimp my ride" attitude does not work well in real life.

Re: a question for the guys with 20s or 22s

I would be the first to say I don't like the look of anything bigger than 19s or 20s (well, I haven't seen it look good yet).

With that being said. Ride quality to me wouldn't be a huge deal on a cruiser like that. Same with gas mileage and performance. It's a 3.1 V6. It's going to be slow. It would take a decent amount of work to look right. If it were my ride and I was dead set on that wheel combo I'd run the 20s in the front and tuck the 22s as much as I could in the rear. The tire would pretty much have to be totally tucked into the fenderwell as well as large clearancing in the fenderwells, most likely cutting out the tops of the stock fenderwell and fabing your own.

It *could* look decent, with a lot of work. Without that much effort it's just going to look like the wheels are slapped on and out of place.

IMO.

These are 20s, apart from the tiny brakes, doesn't look too bad does it?

With a slightly taller/wider tire it wouldn't look too bad. Obviously not the best in performance but looks good.

Re: a question for the guys with 20s or 22s

I don't think that car looks bad, nor did the IROC. But, for my personal aesthetic tastes as well as my liking cars for how they performe as much as or more than how they look, I'd rather have something smaller. Those wheels look good as 18s, IMO>

Re: a question for the guys with 20s or 22s

this is another one with 22s...and it def screams cruiser

..I still have not decided 100 percent because right now in ny its the winter time and I havent gotten around to test fitting the rims and so forth...anyway I hope the vert in the pics is a v6..if i had any other engine I wouldlnt even think of adding anything bigger than 18s..but hopefully by this summer all my projects will be complete I can test fit / sell /buy everything and figure it out..and am I the only one that thinks the 5.0 305 was very inefficient stock pushing out 170 hp when the 3.1 was pushing 141

Re: a question for the guys with 20s or 22s

I really don't like those wheels on that car. The others were tolerable because they 'fit' the car better, but not those. Really slick paint-job though.

You have to remember when these cars were made. Fuel injection was in its infancy and fuel economy saw precidence over power. The 305 first came out in the early-mid 80s and was blessed with a combination of bad heads, bad manifolds, and bad y-pipe. The 305s had only 30 more hp than the V6, but 75 more lbs/ft of torque. But, yeah, they pretty much suck. But, with good maintainence, they are really dependable engines through and through.

Personally, I wouldn't even mess w/ the 20's OR 22's. I would sell them and get a nice set of CCW's or Fikse's if you can. I know HRE is a pretty expensive wheel, so I'm just assuming you could afford CCW's or Fikse's! Haha! If not, then go with some inexpensive ZR1's or C5 Z06's. TT2's also look really good...but if you want to be unique (as i think you do, because you were talking about 20's or 22's) I would say go with CCW's or Fikse's! Both great wheel companies!

I basically thought hre was worth it for the srt buildup because the weight and availibility of modern thread patterns...but honestly for the camaro as a cruiser wheels wise im willing to max out at 1200 and thats including tires if I sell these 22s before then the budget goes up. The wrecked srt engine and tranmission alone cost me like 2500 (from a junk yard that thought it was ruined just because the radiator bracket got pushed into the intake..turns out there was no internal damage) and I figure install fab work(mostly to the tranny tunnel)would run me about 900 and after rims and tires on this buildup Im not willing to spend more that 1200 on rims and tires for the camaro I thought it would be smart to just buy 2 20s slap it on the front(and reuse the old 22s on the rear) but then it might also be alot smarter to just sell the rims and and buy some 18s or 20s and still have money in the budget for maybe a cluster/4th gen seat swap or something.
