I really like those wheels. After getting the original pricing, I e-mailed them again to see if they'd be willing to offer these wheels in 18-inch sizes, but got no response. If i wasn't saving up to buy a house I would order a set tomorrow.

Those are nice wheels. I wouldn't kick them out of bed for farting They would look even better if they were 18's .

Those look bad ***! I miss having my polished and painted stock 92 rims.

So here are a few pic's of how yours would look with justa "little" black accent to match the car.

Re: Introducing a new wheel: The Boyd Coddington "1bad91Z"

Thanks! I kinda like them too!

On accents - One day, I may do all the accents in silver, like the factory did the wheel originally and I may also do the center circle in the hex nut in black with the Camaro ball milling in polished.

As far as 18's go, I don't think the design would look right stretched out another inch. I think 17's is pushing it on that design, IMO.

Available in 3 sizes, but why only 8" wide? Going bigger diameter is a waste, IMHO, if you don't go wider too.

OE Replica, Camaro NEW 82-92 IROC Wheels, 16x8, 17x8, 18x8

I'm a little confused... why did the aftermarket "IROC" wheels get brought into this? The IROC replica is a totally different wheel design than the 91-92 Z wheels.

Because those are the only replica style wheels listed on their site. My assumption as, that those were "yours", since they seem to be the only replica style wheels listed. They could call the whatever they want, but again...The only replicas I saw listed.

I just saw this....

How about 17"/18" replica GTA crosslaces, for $400/each? Much more intricate design.

Face it.....For a BOYD, half of what you pay for is the name, the other half is for the product.

Where on Boyds site did you see anything that says Camaro or IROC replica?

Honestly? I dunno...

Not seeing it now, but I know it wasn't on Boyds site. Some other suppliers site I was looking at, browsing by brand.

Re: Introducing a new wheel: The Boyd Coddington "1bad91Z"

You didn't see it on Boyds site because he hasn't put anything on his site about my wheels yet.

On some random site, you saw the aftermarket "IROC" wheels which are nothing like mine. And yes, the aftermarket IROC wheels that you saw are only offered in 8 inches wide.

Mine are 10 inches wide on the back and 8 inches in the front.

Browsing by the different manufacturer name, they were under Boyds, so what can I saw???

Not exactly a "random site". No more than saying Summit/Jegs is a "random site".

Why only 8" up front? My 9" tuck very well, could be wider, with a 18"+ wheel. The 17" lip is right at the tie rod end.

On the rear, you could tucked 11' or right at the limit with 12". Wide isn't everybody's cup of tea though, but I'd guess it would be on the rear.

why question what the guy wanted. ITS HIS CAR PERIOD ! 91/92 Z/RS rims are NOTHING like the IROC rims. a few companies make REPLICA "IROC" rims in diff. sizes.

NOBODY makes the 91/92 rims. and the OP stepped up and had boyd make a 1 off custom set of him. MAYBE boyd will decide to sale them later as this post said. MAYBE not.

Re: Introducing a new wheel: The Boyd Coddington "1bad91Z"

There is no need at all for me to defend my wheels. I ordered exactly what I wanted and I'm happy with my decision. This thread was meant to be only about me bringing a new wheel to market, (this particular wheel only). If you like or dislike them, feel free to say your piece and move on. There is no need to beat a dead horse...

Stephen - you are coming across as someone who is bitter that nobody has made your crosslace wheels for dirt cheap and in turn, you are taking shots at what I have done. Please feel free to start another thread about your want for that particular wheel. But, please try to keep this thread about what it was originally intended to be about.

Just for the record, I think Boyd's wheels are amongst the best quality in the industry. I would still say that even if another manufacturer would have built my wheels.

Nice car/wheels !

I could be wrong, but I think Boyd Jr. took over the wheel portion of the business about 10 years before Boyd Sr. passed away. Sr. was busy with the hot rod shop and TV show and stuff....

You are TOTALLY misreading me then...

I am not "bitter" & taking it out on your wheels. I just have never been a fan of that style, even on my first 3rd gen ever, a 92. I was just bitter that everyone I talked to, wanted a minimum order before the design work was even started. At $400/each, that's just for the $1600/set. 10 sets = 16 THOUSAND DOLLARS! That much money UP FRONT, with zero guarantee of what the results would be? HELL NO!!!!

If that's what YOU want, great...for YOU. I can just be CERTAIN that larger-than-stock crosslaces would way outsell 91/92 Camaros wheels, hands down.

Do a search & you'll see that numerous threads have been started about larger crosslaces. The interest is out there. Just not 10 people willing to part with $2000/EACH to see what they end up with.

Having CNC experience and cad design under my belt. I can tell you that a crosslace wheel would take 10x the amount of work to redo from scratch. Esp. if you want a billet wheel and not something cast. Your lucky its only $2000 a set vs 4k or more like some of the nicer ccw rims etc...

As you can see from the OP getting these made its not IMPOSSIBLE to talk a manuf. into making you something you really want. Time and $ is all it takes.

So how bad do you really want your larger crosslace rim is the only question.

Stephen -
I think I've been polite and to the point.
We all know you don't like my wheels and that's fine.

I am not trying to sell my wheels or more sets of my wheels. I don't care what wheel would sell more. Again, this thread was about bringing a new wheel option to market for people who may like them.

I would like to keep this thread about my particular wheel. So start a new thread for all crosslace wheel info etc.. There is no need to keep bringing up crosslace wheels here. I don't have crosslaces on my car.

Thanks.

I've helped build a few of the show cars that attend that show and I stop in every now and again. I know Randy (The show organizer of Nifty Fifties).

i love the 91-92 z28 wheel. the design of it. i like what you did with the size of it, bigger and wider. exactly what i want but way to much chrome for me. i like the original aluminum finish much better. but thats your car you can do what you want to it. any chance they will do that rim with the aluminum finish? i'd be interested in a set of those

Just bringing up the custom build of new wheels, regardless of what design they are. Sorry you don't care for my choice of example & experience.

Well, my only advice is to start a new thread and show your prospective manufacturer the generated interest.

Before you post up something to a thread why don't you try reading the whole thread first . It's been stated by the OP about 3 - 4 times that the wheels are not chrome but are a polished aluminum finish and the camera flash causes them to be shinier in the pics than they are in person.

Been there, done that.

Again...Nobody wants to pony up $ on there mere promise of making them, with no pre-build examples.

Cudos to you for being able to afford those. Arrange to have other designs made (whatever the design) & you get a % for the design/idea portion & you'll make some $.

Yes we all get that you don't like the 91/92 style and pray at the alter of crosslace wheels daily. But seriously give it a rest.

EXACTLY!! It's what he wanted and he started a thread about them. It's not a thread discussing replica irocs or problems getting crosslace wheels built. If you want to discuss that start another thread and quit polluting this thread with your negative comments.

I'm not here to bash anyone and niether should anyone else.

Stephen - I sent you a PM. Keep all related info in that PM in the form of private messages, not on this thread.

All others - please keep this thread "friendly" and about the "1bad91Z" wheel.

I'll have a rendering picture of my wheel (pre-production) to show you guys/gals this evening.

Your wheels are badass. How long does it take to make them? How much convincing did it take?

Re: Introducing a new wheel: The Boyd Coddington "1bad91Z"

Not much convincing at all, it was originally going to be a custom "one-off" wheel for just my car. I decided after they were built to share them with all of you, my little gift to our community. I think it's kinda cool that I have a Boyd wheel named after my TGO screen name..

So yes, they are available to purchase.

It took about 3 1/2 months to start to finish which included the renderings, final tweaks to the renderings, CNC programming, build time, Government safety testing etc.. and then shipping.

I would guess it would take 6 - 8 weeks after paying for them to have a set delivered to your door. But, don't quote me on that, I don't know Boyd's schedule.

Here is a pic of the very first 3D rendering of the wheel - Double-click the picture, then zoom in.

Think I'm gonna lower it one inch in the front and one and 1/2 inches in the back...

Did you ever have a chance to take a side shot of the car with the wheels pointed straight?

Hadn't really messed with the car in the last few weeks, been pretty busy with work. Soon as I get some good side shots, I'll post them up.

That picture was just a 3d computer drawing of the wheel filled with autoshade chrome color scheme. The rest of the renderings are grey in color.

Re: Introducing a new wheel: The Boyd Coddington "1bad91Z"

Ill have to admit they are great lookn replica with some differences from the originals. However they are way to overpriced for what they are, I dont care what your name is that shouldnt be a reason to rape your customers wallets. Congrats to you 1bad91z on a great looking car and your score on these wheels, very nice combo.

Re: Introducing a new wheel: The Boyd Coddington "1bad91Z"

Thanks for the compliments!

As far as price.... that's a decent price to pay for a custom made set of billet wheels.... Boyd wheels was the only company in the "some what" affordable range to get these made. The other custom manufacturers were WAY more expensive to get the job done!! Oasis, the MFG. of the 17,18,20 IROC replicas, wanted like $22,000.00 to just to make the mold in order to cast them, then add the price of the aluminum etc....@!!! Other quotes from other companies were like 10 g's to make one set of CNC billet wheels.... Trust me, I did the research before I chose a company.

Re: Introducing a new wheel: The Boyd Coddington "1bad91Z"

I thought $800 a wheel for a custom made billet wheel was really cheap. I know to some that may seem very high and may even exceed the value of your third gen but it is really not for the amount of upfront cost that goes into making a wheel from scratch.

Chip Foose also makes custom billet wheels and I usually really like his work. Just curious did you try his shop also when doing quotes?

Re: Introducing a new wheel: The Boyd Coddington "1bad91Z"

Actually I did call Foose. I was told that they do not make their own wheels in house. They send drawings to another company whom does the renderings and CNC work. I contacted that company and they were too busy to take my business.

Mike, shame on you! if I would of known you called foose, I would have tripled the price..........just kidding. Chip and I remain good friends. Chip is a genuine guy and has a huge heart. I have to be honest though, my wheels are better than his.......
