Carbon fiber rims

I was curious if anyone has put carbon fiber rims on their Camaro? Also what are the upsides and downsides to it. I would assume an upside would be a nice look along with a light weight tire and the downsides would he the price and if it can hold up to a high hp engine.

Just curious on your thoughts!

Re: Carbon fiber rims

Why do you say a downside is look? I think with certain vehicles they look rather good. I understand they are expensive but there are probably other alternative ways to come by the same look. But for sake of this thread I will keep it to a complete carbon fiber rim. There has to be a good reason for making them or they wouldn't spend money to do so

Re: Carbon fiber rims

Because, most people would not want a wheel like that. Some may, but a shiny wheel is more popular to the masses.

The carbon fiber "look' is a trend, very popular now, and you see it applied to many non carbon fiber parts, or parts that don't need to be in carbon fiber.

Much like Billet was the trend in the early 90's.

I think the design of the wheels you posted are just ugly. Regardless of what the material is. Their may be better looking ones out there, I don't know. Those posted look like they would be home on a civic.

I would be curious to see the price as well.

Re: Carbon fiber rims

Well That was just an example. There are actually some pretty nice ones. I have heard some people say 5k for a set and up so they are rather expensive but I have alsoheard of some people spending a hefty amount of money on regular rims on here

Probably closer to 5k each for a real carbon fiber wheel, not a set. Unless you crap money or are so competative in a racing series you need every last ounce of weight savings, just go with a good lightweight aluminum wheel.

Re: Carbon fiber rims

^Why? The v12 looks so much better.

I was gonna say Dymag makes some nice looking cf & magnesium wheels, but looks like they only make 'em for bikes now. :/

They are going to be ALOT more expensive than $5k for a set if they are complete carbon fiber.

CF makes a lot of sense for the barrel portion of the wheel. However the tooling needed to make reliable carbon centers would be hugely expensive. Are they hand laid? They must be due to the complex shapes. I would also like to see how they are connecting the center to the barrel. And finally the joint between the metal inserts and the carbon. Are they titanium?

Phil is correct, Dymags are about $18K a set for the magnesium with carbon barrel option. I saw them on a 911 GT2RS last year in a car show - looked nice, but not $20k nice. That was a 19" fitment, the smallest they make.

The worst part is the failure rate - Dymag is getting sued all the time for wheels failing and cars crashing on the street. While CF is strong and light - it cannot compete with forged aluminum or steel for a wheel application, at least in a 3000lb+ car.

Re: Carbon fiber rims

I saw this wheel at SEMA 2 months ago. It was like a freakin' paperweight for a 19" wheel!
