215 or 225? also, what's a good tire for year round

I would like to hear about some tires that would be good for year round usage. they will be on the car in summer, and when it's snowing out. Also, my car has an open wheel diff, so it sucks bad in the snow. Also, I'm undecided about the size to get. The wheel size is 15x8, and stock tire size is 215/65/15. My buddy, says to get 225/60/15's, and that they look better on the car. I know skinny is better in snow, but I'll only be driving in it a handfull of days, I'm guessing. Should I get 225's, or 215's? I might be able to get a "better tire" , if I go with 215's, cause they are a bit cheaper. Does anyone have some input on this? I would appreciate. Thanks

Decided on Kumho KR21's 225/60/15. Hopefully, i like them at $417 later.

It's a tough question to answer. Very few of us have snow to contend with on these cars. It's either no snow (south) or a different car to drive (north). Then add on that I'm not even sure if there are "winter" tires available in our sizes.

Regardless, I hope you get good use out of the tires. New tires in snow make all the difference as I'm sure you're aware.

Yes, I'm aware of how the car handles in snow. LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL. Worst car for snow I've ever owned, and would be much better if it had a posi rear in it. Wouldn't be too bad if it had a posi. Anyway, this will be my second winter driving the car, so I know how crucial good tires are. For these cars, good tires are everything in the snow. Thanks for the reply though. It's appreciated.

I know its not the answer to your question, but, I gotta say, as a courtesy to everyone else on the road in frozen weather the Camaros (and various other vehicles) should stay home. They are the wrong tool for the job, like using a Phillips head screwdriver to remove a flat head screw. There are so many factors that make these cars just plain dangerous on slick roads, for you and other drivers. Do us all a favor and call a friend with a more capable vehicle to pick you up if you absolutely must get out.

Limited slip will make turning and traveling in a straight line considerably more difficult in the snow. Especially a clutch type differential, where the torque load to slip the axles in a turn is greater than the traction available. This is the area where a gov-lock is better.

All that aside, if you are stubborn or have no other options, at least do it right. All season tires are not snow tires. Tread width won't make any difference if the tread design isn't right for the application. Pick whatever spring-fall tires you want, then keep a set of winter/snow/mud tires mounted on steeleys for when the snow starts to fall.

not sure there is anything you can do. i drove my firebird the first year in the snow, and it was awful. got in a wreck because i could never get going and pulling out of any parking lot was treacherous. besides the weight and traction issues there are sight issues being to low to see around snow piles. i had the trunk full of sand and mine had a limited slip. still when ever there was an inch or two the front spoiler would drag and you would be stuck. never drove it again, its worth the few hundred bucks to get a fwd pos winter car, i spent way more than that fixing the wreck damage

I have to agree with this new information. I will make it a point for this to be the last winter for the car. Also, I'll try to get snow tires instead of the all seasons I had ordered. Thanks again everyone.

I disagree. I grew up (and still live) in a high elevation part of Vermont that gets pounded with snow all winter long, then decided to go to college in Rochester NY, which gets lake effect snow every day all winter. From the time I got my license until a few years after I graduated from college, I drove thirdgens daily all winter long. I had many occasions where I drove around stuck cars on hills. When properly equipped, these cars can be snow tanks, and it doesn't require posi. Neither of my winter driven thirdgens had it. What they did have was a good set of snow tires (no all season junk), and a 100lb weight in the rear well. The weight is essential to help the tires bite.

A properly equipped thirdgen will outhandle any FWD crapcan that's got all-season tires, and will even do as well as many with dedicated snow tires.

That said, if you stick with all season tires, or even worse, summer tires, well, you're gonna die.

good enough is relative. i live near rochester and grew up closer to buffalo. i have driven all different sorts of vehicles with all different sorts of tires. when i was young and could only afford the two i had the firebird and a 86 escort coupe with a manual and full snows, that was the best snow vehicle i ever had. counting the jeeps and 4wd yukon i have now. because rwd sucks in the snow and ice and front wheels keep you going strait so you can go alot faster than in a rwd anything. and being so light it was way easier to stop which is the primary concern. the f-bodies are too light especially in the rear. its not that you cant go, its that for someone who has to get to work everyday and no snow is like an hour, its a big deal to not have to be going slow all the time

now that i have money to buy what i want, i drive a w-body coupe (keep buying new when i wear them out, drive alot of miles) with bfg traction t/a's all season tires. these cars with those tires are almost as good as the escort was with snows. most of the difference is weight. the yukon i only drive the couple times a year there is going to be 6inches or more on the road because alot of times when its snowing bad they will wait till its done.

RWD doesn't always suck in the snow. There are major benefits to separating the wheels that steer from the wheels that propel you. Sure, in most cases a RWD car will slide around some more, but that's a different conversation. A RWD car, when properly equipped (most people ignore that weight in the trunk!) can be very capable. YOu said yourself that it's too light in the rear, and that's the number 1 issue that most people don't correct. I can't count the number of times I literally drove around FWD cars that were stuck on hills. Sure, the tail was wagging on the car, but once you get used to it, you can use that to your advantage too. It's all about having the weight in the rear.

Now that I'm a grown-up, I drive a W-body car too. A 2005 Grand Prix Comp G to be exact, and you're right; it is very good in the snow. That said, chances are, my next daily will be another RWD car. I still prefer them, even in the snow. I can't stand the fact that when I do lose traction that I also lose my steering.

According to Tire Rack there is only a 1 and 3/4in difference between the two.
I considered a 225/60r15 a thin tire, so if you have to unfortunately
deprive your car of tires worthy of a Third Gen. Camaro then you can use ether one. The 215/65r15 does seem to have a better selection.

i tried a whole bunch of weight in the back, didnt seem to so anything but suck my gas.

i had a cutlass supreme, gp gt, 03 monte and the 07 lt i have now gets 32 local and 35-36hwy. not to many cars that will do that and 0-60 in 7.5. but now that gm doesnt make a affordable coupe i dont know what im going to do next time. the cs and 03 had about 200k and the gp had 300k on it when i sold them with hardly and trouble thats why i dont want to jump ship but i dont like 4drs

I drove the New Hampshire winter of 87/88 in a 79 t/a with L-60s on the rear,I spent more time digging out of ditches than actual driving.
