I recently got some steel wheels and upon installation realized that the stock studs are too long. Now I've got lug nuts that are fairly tight on the studs and the studs are spinning in the axle flange. How am I going to get them off? I believe the back of the studs are inside the brake drums. It started pouring outside so I called it quits for the day.

if i get what your saying the wheel is still loose best bet is to grab the back side of the tire & pull out as hard as you can to put pressure aginst the lug then try to take the lugs loose hopfully you got an impact & not trying to do it by hand that might be a bit harder to do

Some kind of nut splitter or lug nut cutter. I never used one or seen it used but that came to mind.
Then of course you will have to survey the carnage.
Thats all I can think of. Other input will probably be more direct help.
Good luck

I had the car towed to a shop. I don't have the time to deal with it. I'll post as soon as I hear how the shop gets them off. The mechanic said it may come down to cutting off the lug nuts. Hopefully they won't damage my new wheels. I just bought those lug nuts today, too.
It actually turned out to be the wrong thread pitch of lug nuts the parts store gave me. Go figure a CHEVY has metric studs! So it wasn't the studs spinning it was the threads grinding themselves apart. The shop cleaned up the threads on the studs and ordered me the right lug nuts. The funny part is they left a little note at the end of the receipt. "Car is heavily modified: not drivable."

Yeah, don't know if I should be proud or embarrassed about that...

along the same line , "pretty chrome lug nuts" . many people buy new ones for new wheels . (nothing wrong with that) never force new lug nuts on . chrome flash/slag can get into threads on inside of lug nuts . if they don't spin on easy chase threads with a tap . happened to me on my p/u , had to replace wheel stud . good luck .

be advised of this :: the aluminum wheels that our cars came with have a different pitch to them.so standard lug nuts will work loose and as you already found out they have metric threads. just throwing this out there for allOriginally Posted by cycleguy04

its not the thread pitch im reffering to its the taper of the lug nuts that is different.the part of it that contacts the rim specifically.sorry for the confusionOriginally Posted by InfernalVortex
