Cannot get wheels off.

I bought a 87 Iroc roller and can not get the rear wheels off the car. Yes the lug nuts are off, LOL. Any body got any ideas that wont damage the aluminum wheels. I was thinking about trying to heat up the rotor and lugs but I don't want to damage any seals in the rear end either. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks

Re: Cannot get wheels off.

Try grabbing the side of the tire and rocking it back and forth a few times..... That usually works.

Make sure it is very secure on stands!

First and foremost!

Then give it a swift kick. Sit on the ground facing the wheel and kick the outermost edge of the wheel in a stomping motion. May have to do this on opposite sides of the wheel. Basically Nuffs rocking idea to the extreme.

Re: Cannot get wheels off.

I've had good luck removing wheels that were "stuck" on by throwing a spare wheel and tire at the one that's 'stuck' on the hub.

Car Jacked up - well supported !
Lugs removed
lubricate ( optional ! )

I usually throw the spare wheel/tire at the bottom sidewall of the tire first so I'm not putting stress on the rest of the steering system in front or risking the spare hitting the body. If it takes more then 1 toss,... "carefully" aim & throw the spare at the front sidewall of the stuck wheel,... then again at the back sidewall. It usually only takes 1-2 throws before a stuck wheel will break free. The spare wheel/tire is nice and heavy and tire-to-tire impact doesn't harm anything. ( Just don't throw the spare tire at the body !! ) Sure beats tryin' to kick the wheel free or hammering on the rim with a sledge !!

Good Luck !

Re: Cannot get wheels off.

Additional options:
- Remove center cap and spray PBBlaster or other penetrant.
- PBBlaster into the lug holes of the wheels.
- PBBlaster between the spokes at the joint between the wheel and disc/drum
- put the lugs on loosely, car on the ground, rock the car back and forth.
- slide hammer with hook reaching between spokes. Whack a few, the shift to opposite side of wheel and repeat. Obviously, lugs off, car in the air.

Re: Cannot get wheels off.

Couple whacks to the inside of the wheel with a hammer. I've never hurt one by doing that so far, and I get 2-3 cars in a week that I need to break the hammer out on.

Re: Cannot get wheels off.

Thanks all for the info, I have rocked, squirted lubricant, put a 2X4 across rim and hit with a 5lb sledge, and also put the 2X4 on the inside edge from under car and smacked it with the sledge. I guess I can try hitting it with the spare but I'll swing it at the tire and wheel, like you said don't want to hit the body.

Re: Cannot get wheels off.

Loosen the nuts a bit from tight.

Drive it. Yank it hard left and right.

You won't need to go fast nor far so it's not risking much.

Re: Cannot get wheels off.

Use a block of wood or the like in between the hammer and the wheel, unless you don't mind the risk of breaking the wheel or leaving giant dents in it.

Re: Cannot get wheels off.

John,Your idea worked thank you, but I did not throw tire and wheel, I swung it alternating sides and the left came off with 3 swings, the right was a bit more stubborn. Again thank you for the idea.

Re: Cannot get wheels off.

I first learned that trick when I was taking some pieces off my buddies wrecked Z28 about 20 years ago. The car was in the middle of no-where and I had just a small collection of tools with me at the time. After kicking at the wheel for 5 minutes and getting no-where I got pissed-off. picked up a front wheel and threw it at the back wheel,.... Vola - wheels came right off !!

Since then I've used that trick - more than once !!! Glad it worked for you too !!

Re: Cannot get wheels off.

I thought this thread was a joke. I never heard of such a thing. Maybe stuck brake drums but not a stuck wheel.

Wow!

Learn something new everyday I guess.

Re: Cannot get wheels off.

Usually a BFH does the trick, just gotta be careful to hit the tire not the wheel.

Re: Cannot get wheels off.

Yes, the aluminum had oxidized and welded the wheels to the hub on the rear axle. I bought a roller and the rear wheels had not been removed in some time.

I am thinking my car had not been driven in a couple years. If you drive your car you should not have a problem.
