Wheels and Tires Idea Help
I'm looking to get a new set of wheels on my 92 RS Camaro. I was wondering what is the widest you can go on the back? Also what is your rim of choice?
Thanks-

Re: Wheels and Tires Idea Help
Lots of threads here about 17x11s on the rear. You can wrap them in cheap Sumitomo 315s, but the widest 315s that aren't race or drag radials are Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3. I wish I still had the pic comparing those 2 choices. There are also Nitto 555s, or if you have deep pockets and are willing to really clearance the car for them, Pirelli and Michelin still offer 335/35R17 street radials.
I've also seen 335/30R18s pinched onto 18x10.5s, but that costs more and performs worse.
I had ideas about trying Chinese copies of Corvette 19x12s, which can mount 355/30s, but the cost is extreme. It would require mini-rubbing and serious suspension mods. Or at least serious mods to the trailing arms.

Re: Wheels and Tires Idea Help
335-35-17 street tires are pretty much extinct; haven't seen any new tires in year - I stand corrected if someone knows otherwise.
Thankfully GM gave the 3rd gens enough room out back to barely fit a 315 width tire on the right wheel. Very few wheel and tire choices for a 315-35-17 these days, so you might want to skip that and put a 295 or 275/285 out back (on all 4 corners is best).
In terms of wheels, you can either go with ones that need spacers or not. Ones that do not you can count on being limited sizes or of very high cost. The market for the 3rd gen in terms of wheels is only a small fraction of what it was from about 15 years ago. If you wanted to go no-spacers, you can go 275-40-17 tires on 17" x 9.5" wheels - which are 10" wide.

Paul, what kinda backspacing would be required on a 17 x 9.5 or 17 x 10 wheel? i got some 3 pice wheels from a second gen thinking of getting new barrels and put them on my third gen.

5.25" to 5.5" BS is what you need for a 9.5" wheel. 10" wheel fits on the back, but not the front.

Re: Wheels and Tires Idea Help
Doesn't matter if the tires are 2014 production, or even 2012 stock, if stored correctly, as new high-end tires are. Pirelli will make more when current inventory runs low, as they do with Countach 345/35R15 rears. Those 335s were OE on F40s and original Vipers, so there will be new 335/35R17 Pirellis eventually.
Why limit yourself to only 275s on the front? You can tuck an 18x10.5 easily, thus allowing up to a 315/30 safely. Paul is just trying to push the 17x9.5s that he sells. They aren't bad for what they are, but they were not the wisest size, he didn't bother with 11s for the rear, and the cost per wheel is steep.

Re: Wheels and Tires Idea Help
We cannot make an 11" wheel as the wheel forging machinery maxes out at 9.5" in 17" and 10" for the 18". We also know that 315-35-17 tires are in very limited supply these days and that will eventually go away like the 245-50-16 and 335-35-17 sizes. So that is your answer.
Cost is relative - considering how much Hawk's charges for their 17" x 9" GTA clones and also the Ronal R15 in 17" x 9.5". Keep in mind that our wheels are flow formed (or rotary forged if you listen to high end wheel makers), weigh only 20lbs, clear 14" brakes, and have been proven winners in CMC, AI, and autocross racing since 2012 - I would say they offer the most bang per buck on any direct fit 3rd gen wheel on the market.
I just noticed on tirerack.com that Michelin makes the PS2 tire in 335-35-17, that is about as limited as you can get in that size. No wonder everyone has been upsizing the older cars to 18" with a 335-30-18 tire.

Re: Wheels and Tires Idea Help
Ctw is best bang for buck when you consider weight and brake fitment very few come close and require zero modification
Being and car hobby cost is relative and your bound to spend money if you like it or not
Consider style you like and what you use car for and get wheels that suit your needs
I,been out the game but, seems he offering 18" wheels now and would lean towards 18" wheel just due to tire selections but 17" would be fine as well and have good selection of tire size available
And with 3 piece wheels you can swap out barrels to achieve fitment depending on if they well the barrels still if it's a older 3 piece wheel abd, would,be,harder and more money to acquire

Re: Wheels and Tires Idea Help
So Paul you are suggesting a 17x9.5 wheel, which would not require backing space, and tire size 275x40x17? Also what would you but in front? Right now we have 245x50x16 all the way around but rubs a little when you turn. What 17in wheel would you suggest? Money is limited here to as well. I want to thank everyone for your post.

Budget is around 1500. I'm looking for the right size in front and as wide as I can go in the rear w/o tubbing or modifications. Spacers I can be ok with.

Re: Wheels and Tires Idea Help
We use and recommend using the same 17" x 9.5" wheels on all 4 corners with 275-40-17 tires.
Rubbing a little at full lock is not a problem - that would be something you have on occasion when parking, not when driving. Some cars don't even have rub with a 275 up front, others do with a 245.
$1,500 is a little light for a full 17" wheel and 275-40-17 tire combo - unless you go for the Hawks 17" x 9" wheels, which are on sale right now, but you will need to ship them $100 and you will need centercaps and lugs, pushing it above $1,000. Other choices run a bit over $1,000 just for wheels. I can say this - CTW Motorsports (my company) is offering our 17" x 9.5" wheels with shipping and lugs for $1,100 right now, all you need is a set of tires and you are around $1,600 to $1,700. Nothing is cheap that fits correctly - unless you want to go 4th gen wheels with spacers.

Re: Wheels and Tires Idea Help
CTW and hawks offer 17" bolt on with tires your looking to spend tad more due to shipping and new tires cost install etc
You can look for corvette wheels with tires local Craigslist and find good deal only need to buy adapters
With running adapter alot more options open up XXR has some good cheap wheels in 5x120 and alot of aftermarket wheels made for some BMW with adapter wheel work
BMW m sport wheels parallel can be found for cheap as well
Just depends on your taste and needs 17" there's limited amount to shop for 18" wheel make more easier due to popular size
Yea what he said not bad deal for some wheels !!
