Cragar Soft 8s

hey there, Ill be getting an 84 'bird, s/e soon, but id like to order the wheels I want asap.

Id like to know if 17x9s with 5in backspacing would fit all around?

What is the go to backspacing for these cars?

Id like to do 15x10s but I had a 4th gen and 15" cragars would NOT fit in the rear. Do 15s clear brakes on a 3rd gen?

On that same note, assuming 15"s do fit, would 15x10s fit all the war around with a certain backspacing?

Im okay with fender rolling. Thanks, any help is greatly, greatly appreciated!

Re: Cragar Soft 8s

They should fit.

But those wheels are very heavy - the 17" x 8" version is about 34lbs/wheel. 9" version is probably 36lbs. That is at least 10lbs/wheel more than any aluminum wheel in the size you want - not a good thing by any means.

Have you considered other wheels?

Yeah those wheels suck. Spend a few bux more and get a better wheel, preferable aluminum.so it doesn't weigh a ton.

15x10 wont work on the front without sticking out a mile. Could make them fit I suppose but you'd have to redesign the entire front end

Re: Cragar Soft 8s

The 17x9 in wheels your talking about all around will look like a truck.

You will have a huge dish front and back.

The reason some of us can get away with the wide wheels in front like that is because they don't have the dish to the outside.

Example is the Corvette wheels.
Take a look at this link and you will see what I mean.

Here's a photo of my car.
Its called a staggered wheel pattern with a smaller tire front on a thinner 7x15 wheel and a slightly larger tire with 8x15 wheel in the rear.

Small dish front with larger dish rear.
That's the way you would have to use the ones your looking at if you want them to look decent.

Re: Cragar Soft 8s

Im totally okay with them sticking out. Im specifically going for kind of an apocalyptic mad max vibe. I had planned on fabbing up some large fender flares too so Im actually kind of about that look, I just want to make sure Im not going to have fitting or problems hitting stuff when I turn. Im also wanting as square a stance as possible so Id like to have all four wheels be the same. So the 15s, while wide, would clear the brakes front and back?

They will hit the fenders big time in the front. They can't stick out, the car will be undrivable.

Re: Cragar Soft 8s

Okay then, Ive always been into these aero wheels as well. Do any of you know which is the widest that would fit all the way around? (Id like a square stance) It looks like 15s are all they offer, are you all sure 15s clear brakes on 3rd gens? If so, what backspacing would you guys recommend on these? Again, thanks for your advice guys! http://www.aeroracewheels.com/wheels.html

Those wheels are meant pretty much for off-road trucks, while they may fit a 3rd gen - you are better getting something better (aluminum and larger).

What wheels are on your car now?

Re: Cragar Soft 8s

Aero wheels are asphalt/dirt track wheels, not really ideal for a street car. The are setup for 5/8 lugs, not sure if they would even work for you. Also, most that I saw are not available in a favorable.offset for a 3rd gen.

A 15x8 with 4.5" of bs should fit front and rear.

I would again consider aluminum wheels. Steel wheels are quite heavier and will affect the cars braking ability, acceleration and overall performance. Lighter is always better, never add heavier wheels.
