Max width tires

Have an 86 z28 with stock wheels 15x7. Looking around for new tires and wondering what the max width will fit without rubbing? I was looking at cooper cobra 235/60 15’s. The stock tires are 215/65 15’s. I’d like to go a little wider to look better that’s why I’d look at a 60 or 55 series side wall. Overall diameter of the stock is 26”. The 235/60 overall diameter says 26.1”. Just looking to see what others run for a width tire without the rub or mods.

Re: Max width tires

235 is fine and shouldn't rub. You will get various answers on what is too wide and what is not, but that isn't typically until you are considering 295 wide and up.

Thanks for that. I’m trying not to go crazy just nice and little wider to look better.

Re: Max width tires

So, from what I'm reading... if I put a 255/60 r15 on the front of the car it should work just fine?

That tire is a bit tall at 27". I cant garantee any rubbing. If you are lowered it could. Might want to step that aspect ratio down a touch to 55 which will bring that height down to just over 26".

Roger that... thanks for the info. I just bought a 1988 with a 383... it's got 15" wheels on it, 255-60-r15 on the back & small 155-80-r15 on the front... I'm fine with the 15" wheels but I'm wanting to add width to the front as well as height. I live in the mountains of KY and some spots on the roads aren't the smoothest... I figure adding a bit of height to the front via higher profile tires will help me out a lot.

As far as width is concerned... 255 should work just fine up front without rubbing... correct?

Also, I have no clue what the rim size is on the back (nor does the person I bought it off of) but I knw the tire size is 255-60-r15.... I would imagine that the wheel size is either a 15x7 or 15x8... does that sound about right?

Re: Max width tires

If it is the factory RS rim than its a 15x7. A 255 should not rub but its relative to the entire setup. I think you'll be ok.

When we discuss what fits, and what rubs, the understanding is that all the other factors are as they came from the factory. Sooooo.....if you're at factory ride height, and the wheel/tire combo is at the factory max diameter of about 26", the wheels are factory (or factory spec offset/BS), then yes, a 255 should work no problem. Once variables start to change, it's hard to really know exactly how one size will fit from car to car.
