I have a 1988 IROC Z convertible all original 8500 mile car so you know I'm gonna repair NOT replace.. Wheel guy broke the center cap. I ordered a new cap from Hawk's. The Service Parts Identification Label, SPIL list the RPO as 92P as the wheel paint color. It's gold. The problem is no one can figure out how to convert this to a W # everyone says I need.
I have called my local Chevy parts guy, check several body shops and wheel repair shops. NO LUCK.
HELP!
Thanks in advance.
Which color code are you looking for, the gold for the wheels or dark red metallic? The body color paint should be WA9535 for 88, but I'm sure that's easy to see on the SPID. Assuming you're looking for the gold, and to the best of my knowledge, there isn't a specific paint code. I owned my 89 with gold wheels for 20 years, and while I don't have definitive evidence, I'd all but guarantee there are different colors within the same model year. Add to that, when Hawk's was looking to paint they're new 17" Iroc repops, they were looking for guys with original gold wheels to reference because they couldn't find any actual original paint codes.

Thanks for the compliment.
Well I thought I was clear that I was looking for the wheel color so I could paint the new center cap to match. So yes I'm looking for the wheel paint. I'm shocked that Chevy assigned it an RPO but cant tell me how to actually get the W code I need. My next step is to call a major paint supplier and ask them. Really tired of having all the shops say bring it in and we'll match it to a color chip. NOT excited about that then put it on and it might as well be pink. Thanks again for the compliment and reply.
It sounded like you were looking for the wheel color, but you said you bought one...that's why I wasn't sure. I get it now....gotta paint it.
Well I'm not saying 100% for sure that there's no code, but in my research and experience, there isn't. ...that being said, a good shop should easily be able t match the paint. I mean I get wanting the code, but I wouldn't lose any sleep over having a good shop simply match the color. Go to bandit TA page and try to find a good debate over which gold is the RIGHT gold! LOL....very entertaining!!! I've seen countless photos of "original" wheels and some are more of a champagne gold, and some are more of like a 24k gold. Sure, one set here or there may not be original, but there are TOO many of each out there to not simply be different paint colors. Again, I can't PROVE 100% that this is the case, but in my mind there's no doubt.
Correct me if I'm wrong here fellas, but aren't those the wrong wheels for your car to begin with? They're Z28 rims, and I was under the impression that IROC's only had the choice of the little 15in IROC's, or the common 16's. If your car did come with those zedder rims, I also don't believe the paint is correct on them. I've never seen a set be 100% gold, but instead gold with silver outlines and a black center cap1982-1984 Z28's pic thread!!!!! - Page 4 - Third Generation F-Body ...
Even I had to research the wheels. I had an 87 IROC-Z Z28. 1985 through 87 the 16" wheels were standard if you ordered the Z28 with IROC-Z option. Beginning in 1988 the IROC-Z replaced the Z28 and became it's own body style. The Z28 returned for 1990 after the Chevy IROC relationship ended. The NEW for 1988 IROC-Z came standard with 15" wheels and 16" were optional. The gold color is a 1 year only for 1988. Even though it looks similar the other years are different. What I find strange is Chevy assigned the gold color an RPO so it could be identified but no one can give me a code to have paint mixed. ONE OF THOSE WTH MOMENTS.
RKeats, this car does appear to have the correct 15" Iroc wheels. ....I don't think it was until 89 that the new style, 15" double line IROC wheel was introduced as standard. So to say it another way, the double line Irocs in 16" were 88-90, but the 15" double line Irocs were 89 and 90 only.
The car was appraised at $26,500-$28,000. BAT suggested a reserve of $25,500. Want to be in the high $20's. I've been watching the 3rd gens for some time and actual auction results are $25-30, one Z28/1LE went over $30. I sold my 87 Z28/IROC-Z B2L 350, 700 miles in wright me a ticket red 4 years ago for $25,500. Sold my 92 Z28/1LE, white red stripe 25th ana, pkg. 4000 miles 6-7 years ago for $25,000.
This car should bring high $20's. Just need the right buyer. This is collector quality not the 49,000 mile 89 that's on BAT now. Huge difference between it and mine.
