8.8 Rear Wheels and Tires

8.8 guys, what wheels and tires did you go with after shortening the rear end to center it? Each axle is 2 13/16" shorter than the original 10 bolt axles, so I'll need to make up the difference with negative offset and (unfortunately) a spacer. Having a heck of a time finding 16" or 17" wheels in 9"-10" width with any real negative offset. I'd need at least 13/16" (~20mm-21mm) of negative offset to run a 2" spacer. I'd like more so that I don't have to run such large spacers. Jegs has the right width and offset, but only in a 15" diameter.

I'm sure I'm not the first to run into this, what'd you guys do?

So I'm not 100% sure what you did, but must guys running an 8.8 build it to either 3rd gen or 4th gen widths....so there's no difference in length/wheels. ...unless i just totally am missing something. Obviously you can build to just about any width you want.

My 8.8 was cut and welded to factory thirdgen width. When It was first built i was using my 10 bolts axles (28 spline). Im running billet specialties street lites, 17x9.5 with 5.5in backspacing.

I also had my 8.8 cut to thirdgen spec. Then had custom axles made to convert it back to chevy bolt pattern wheel

Re: 8.8 Rear Wheels and Tires

Ok, thanks for the replies all. I bought two 8.8s so I could use the short axle from each. I cut the longer side of the 8.8 to the same length as the shorter side, so the differential would be centered and take a stock 8.8 short axle on each side. Then just transferred all the brackets and stuff over from the 10 bolt. In retrospect, maybe I should've built it to factory or 4th gen width and had custom axles made, but no use crying over spilled milk now. Looks like I'll have to run some custom adapters, but the car won't bee seeing any strip use, autocross, or any of the more demanding tasks so I'm not super worried. If all those 8,000# trucks are doing it, my little camaro should be alright! Just hate the idea of having a spacer in there, that's all.
