Need help choosing wheels/tires

I’ve got a 89 RS and I want to go for a nascar/stock car look but I know virtually nothing about wheels and tires.

I know I want to go with either the aero or basset wheels but I don’t know how big I can go without modifying the body or putting spacers on. I have the stock wheels on the car now and I want to use the tires I have on them now or at least keep the front ones the same size so I can reuse the tires. So any input would be great.

Re: Need help choosing wheels/tires

Speedway motors website has info on bolt patterns, back spacing versus offset measurements. I would also research the rim/tire size combo you want. If your OE tire size is say 26” tall then you will need a wider tire with a shorter sidewall height to compensate for the bigger diameter wheel. Keep in mind that if your RS is V6 or TBI V8 you will lose some acceleration due to wheel changes because a bigger rim weighs more and a wider tire take more torque to get moving. You cornering could be better if all 4 tires are lower profile and the ride will stiffen.

It really all depends on how big a wheel you want. I would check you door placard for the OE tire size and go from there.

Re: Need help choosing wheels/tires

Bolt pattern for our wheels is 5 lug by 4.75". Good rule of thumb is "0" offset on all four wheels. There are some minor offset differences in offsets through the years depending on various factors, but far and away the most common aftermarket option is going to be "0" offset. This will fit on any stock thirdgen just fine.

Looks like the Aero wheel may be your ticket. Quick look shows a 50 series, 15x7 with a 4.75" pattern and a 3.5" backspacing. The offset is probably right there at "0"mm or darn close. Maybe + just a few mm, which shouldn't give you any issues. Now let's be clear. I don't know what other mods you've done, what your current tire size is, and what your ultimate goals are, so please, PLEASE do your research and don't go off what I'm telling you as gospel. Still....I feel like this will give you a pretty good starting point. I suggest giving them a call.
