Wide tires on a 15x7.5?

Looking to replace some tires on my 85 trans am. It currently has something like 225’s on it all the way around. I’m looking to see what the widest tire I can fit on these wheels are. They seem to be 15x7.5’s, but I’m not sure what those fit. I heard you can fit 255’s on a 7 wide wheel safely and 265 would push it, but how would that translate to 7.5’s? Thanks

All tires size specs and wheel recommendations should be listed on either the manufactures website or online store. Not all sizes are the same despite the number and some tires will have a wider wheel size range than others depending on who makes them.

There are some published specs as to max/min widths you can mount on a given rim but that is very much subject to opinion and whatever you or your tire shop are actually comfortable with. My 1985 tires on the rear are 255 / 60 R15. They are stock rims, maybe 8" wide? I doubt that size would clear the front without rubbing lock-to-lock. I'm very happy with their fit on the rear but not sure I would mount any wider on that stock rim.

I’d only be buying that size for the rear, not all around. They’re also aftermarket wheels. I know they’re American racing wheels, not sure but I think they’re outlaws

The tire sizes corresponding to the rim width of 7.5 inches are:

Tire series 30,35,40 width 205, 215 45 225
Tire series 50,55 width 235, 245
Tire series 60,65,70 Width 255
Tire series 75,80 width 265

I would say either a 235 or 245. I have 15x7's up front with 235's on them right now and love the look (15x8's on the rear with 275's).
