Firebird and Camaro PROMinator
Re: Firebird and Camaro PROMinator
Craig, any update? I'd love to upgrade my Prominator to a USB setup, and I quoted your post above over on corvetteforum in response to a question I got about my TPI installation. I think you'll have a number of folks interested.

Re: Firebird and Camaro PROMinator
Apologies for the delay on this, I've been off on so many tangents it's not funny.
Here's a teaser if it helps. I can't say exactly when it'll be ready, I've got probably about 10 more traces to lay and then the FW to work out.

At its largest measurement, it is 1.4" x 1.6".
A 28-pin chip, by comparison, is 0.6" x 1.5".
Mini USB cable comes off right next to pin 28.

Hmm, well, I'm still excited Mr. Moates, very excite, can't wait, but have to... soo, still patiently waiting in excitement. Yes! I look forward to being able to order from you and start out on the tuning road. Thank you for dedicating time to this, we all appreciate it greatly!

Re: Firebird and Camaro PROMinator
I'm ready for one of these too. I'm just finishing up a 383 (385 actually) swap with a mild cam upgrade, rockers, pushrods, lifters and some older GMPP iron heads that I ran through, but with the stock chip and TPI. As expected it needs to be feathered at start up and stumbles at idle. It throws engine code "44" so I'll be testing/swapping the 02 sensor next -- it's definitely not running lean though and smells rich with its fresh new appetite for pump gas. It also runs way hotter. I'm pretty sure that I can DIY tweak my problems away with a promgulator and its supporting cast so please post when you are taking orders (even if I have to wait :-).

Any updates on the promulgator im getting the car back on the road with a new cam and using old chips and a uv eraser isnt cutting it, i was looking at the ostrich, the ebl is a little out of my price range, this would fit the bill perfect, thanks.

Re: Firebird and Camaro PROMinator
Hi,
After 4 years of lay-down my project [Healthy problems]
My two sons did finish the build of my Cobra [replica]
Today would be the big day, just start the car and have some celebrations.
But after several try's we decide to go back home.
During the four years the battery did die [logic].
Now my question.
Do you know if my loaded prom at the "prominator" has been clear due to long period with out power?
I use the 730 ECM
The car has started with this ECM and with the prominator but that was 4 years ago.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Best regards,
Carlos

Re: Firebird and Camaro PROMinator
Next time you are with the car try this: key-on, engine-off, and observe the SES/CEL light.
It should turn on briefly, blink off, then turn on solid.
Can repeat the test after 10 seconds of key-off.
The blink off of the SES/CEL means that the ECM is running from the PROM/prominator.

Yes, it has been quite some time.

My SES light did not turn on or did blink, would this mean that the ECM is gone??
My youngest son did measure the SES voltage and he found only 0,4 V when it should be 12 V
Is there a easy method to check is the ECM is OK or broken?
We don't have those ECM here in The Netherlands so I need to be shore that it is broken before I buy and other from E-Bay.

Carlos

Re: Firebird and Camaro PROMinator
Wasn't the battery dead? The ECM grounds the SES to turn it on. It gets +12 volts from the ignition switch.

Re: Firebird and Camaro PROMinator
So, if the SES lamp is OK and the ignition key gives the 12v to the ECM and the lamp does not light, it means that the ECM is gone.
Thanks!

Re: Firebird and Camaro PROMinator
Hello,
I want to let you know that the Cobra has started today.
Just clean put some dielectric paste [silicone paste] to the ECM connectors and the SES light when ON.
After priming the pump the engine did start like a chap.
Thanks for your help!

Hi Crafty,
Unfortuneately the prominator is no longer available. I was lucky to get one, but it was a long time ago. There is some information available on Craig Moates' website: http://static.moates.net/gmecm/prominator/index.htm
If my prominator should ever break down I will probably use one of these two sites for my next build:
http://www.moates.net/
http://www.dynamicefi.com/
Hope this helps.

Re: Firebird and Camaro PROMinator
Buy the EBL instead. When my Prominator fried a few years ago, I was told there was less than one hundred of them produced. By now, most of them are also likely fried or in use and won't be given up until the chip or the car owner dies.
What I DID like about it was the remote switch for changing bins. Unlike the EBL systems, You did not need it hooked up to the laptop.
