4th gen instrument cluster with autometer guages!

been working on my sew gauge set up for the 02 dash and im finally making progress. i used a 93 t/a cluster and cut everything out of it, and used the panels to hold a piece of plastic so i could mount the guages. i cut the bezels and took off the glass on the autometer guages so it would fit under the stock plastic. im going to have my friend at the tint shop put dark tint on the factory clear plastic, so it gives the gauges the smoke look, and will hopefully give them a color of grey to match my paint.

im excited.
end rant.

Speedo?

We don't need no stinkin' speedo!

Looks good, but I agree, where's the speedo? If it's all race I can understand, but then why bother with the 4th gen dash swap?

...maybe a HUD type of speedo???

its a weekend cruiser. really no need for a speedo. i use my rpms as a guide. ole hot rodding thing. plus a speedo weighs more.... more wiring.... more money.

i had debated on just doing tach, oil and water, and putting the fuel in volts in the glove box, but it looked VERY plain with only 3 gauges in the cluster. figured id go ahead and dress it up. hehe.
turn signals and high beam indicator are in now too. looks a lil better now. ill have to take another pic when i get it all together.

Make a new trim plate to put over it as is that has holes just big enough for the gauge faces so that the gauge cups arent showing.

something i havent thought of. im going to get it tinted 1st, i think that it will hide the view of the cups for the most part. im not a fan of the way they look either, prolly cause ive been used to the black bezels on them for so many years. ive got plenty of plastic, so i could try it.
thanks for the input.

on second thought, i cant add a piece of plastic. my snap in cover for the dash barely snaps in now, and ive only added 1/8 inch. i could dissassemble the guages, and paint the cups black?

YES, NO ?
thanks again.

Not a fan of the no speedo. Looks unfinished.

I understand you really don't "need" it, but you don't "need" carpet either, and it weighs a lot more than a speedo!

ya know, since i did my 4th gen swap my speedo hasn't been working....but it's there :-d and my tach isn't accurate, but at highway speeds its at the same spot it normally sits at, so, it's not overly difficult to drive, and if you don't drive like a mad-man in town, noone will ticket ya anyway. Had the autometer swap idea when doing mine for "functionalbility" but, didn't do it. Still contimplating it, but, i might have gone with Tach, Speedo, maybe Temp in the middle, probably oil actually though. Then Temp, Volts, and Fuel in the center mounted pods...then i could have a speedo :-d

when you are as fast as me, it would scare you to see the speedo wrap. i choose not to have one so i dont give my passengers a heartattack.

I drove with no speedo for 3 years, broken cable.. but after a month or 2 of driving you can judge speed by rpms, I jus got a friend to drive infront of me doing 50 so i knew what my tach said. It works. but still i prefer to have a speedo now that i got it working.

looks great! i would try to figure out how the get the bezels back on the guages though. i think the no speedo gives it that "all-business-no-playing-around-i-am-going-to-walk-all-over-you" look. similar to my idea, but i will have a speedo, just a small 2 1/16" digital one tucked underneath clear plexi glass so no one can see it unless the car is on, and put in an 82-89 camaro bezel.

cant put the bezels back on, i cut them off. hehe. they wont fit behind the clear plastic anyway (center 2 gauges). going for a different look altogether and i think i found it.

all business... i like that.

no reason to be more careful. i wanted something different and i really like the look. i dont have a pic yet of the tinted lens on it, but it makes the setup what it is. autometer will re-bezel a gauge for 8 bucks, BTW.
