Shorty header with largest collector?

Im SERIOUSLY thinking of going to a T76 turbo next spring but I dont want to use a stock exhaust manifold on my drivers side. I would like to run a shorty header instead.

What should i choose for a good shorty header with a large diameter collector?

Ive heard the SLP collector is only 2 1/4"

The Hooker shorties have a 3 inch collector. I don't think anyone else makes one bigger than that.

Hedman's is also a 3" outlet, unfortunately, I have no close-up pics of them on the car.

the biggest I've seen are the hooker shorties and the headman - both 3 inch - I have the hookers on my 91 LB9

For our car's, I have yet to see headers which have a true collector: which must be properly sized for diameter and length. It's a good thing other components(notably the intake and cam) are designed to generate low and mid torque, because the available exhausts are not helping the cause.

Normally, a moderately sized exit diameter(2 1/4") and a full-length collector(10 -14") would generate the best scavenging and flow. However, I'm not sure what benefit good scavenging would offer a turbo motor. The boosted incoming charge will probably push the exhaust out very effectively, and the minimal valve overlap timing required by such a motor would work against good scavenging anyways.

I would think that a large diameter collector exit would reduce the exhaust gas velocity, which would hurt turbine spool-up(increased lag) and turbine speed(boost).

Also, by going to headers, will you be reducing reliability? Most headers are not designed to withstand the extra heat present in a turbocharged exhaust system(which is why a lot of aftermarket turbo systems require a cast(iron or steel) manifold. This would probably be aggravated by having a heavy turbo unit hanging off of the headers.

Probably the best idea would be to talk to a shop that has experience with designing/installing aftermarket turbo systems. Gale Banks Engineering or Turbo City would be the place to start. You may also want to search out Andriis Skulte(he moderates one of the forums here), as I understand he is designing a twin-turbo setup for his '89 IROC.

I'd like to know who makes shorty headers with 2.5" collectors. I thought my Edelbrocks had 2.5's because the y-pipes are 2.5"...but now I'm realizing that may be a poor assumption.
