Is this a symptom of a tranny going bad??

Latley my RPM's have been fluctuating. Sometimes when I'm stopped at a light with my foot on the brake the RPM's will jump from around 500 to 700 or a little higher and hold there and sometimes it will drop back down to around 500. Or even sometimes when rolling to a stop it seems like the tranny isn't kicking down the RPM's will hold around 700 or a little higher. Today for the first time my car died at a drive thru. Tried to start it back up and it chugged a little bit and started up. I pulled forward a little bit stopped with car in drive and foot on brake and after about 2 min of waiting behind a car in front of me it died again and this time it took a lot of cranking and car chugged a whole lot then finally started back up, but barely. I thought the problem was the IAC motor but that wasn't it nor was it the TPS. I know my tranny has been going bad for sometime now, it has been making a buzzing noise while idling and it shudders in OD but now I'm starting to think it is really going bad. Could these be symptoms of a tranny gone bad????

Possibly a bad torque converter also.

Sounds like ur tranny is crapping out

I recently just had the same problem in my 89 Firebird, the same exact problems were happening to me. My tranny would stay in a high rpm and the shifting was extremely late and hard. I took it to several tramission shops and they all told me that it was my tranny that was going bad. Now I don't know if it was just needing to be replaced or if something was causing the tranny to go bad, but I just decided to replace my 700R4 for a TH350 from a '70 Chevelle. I would suggest you get that tranny looked at because I ran my car like that for about 3-4 weeks (due to no money to fix it) and it cause significant wear on my new engine and it caused me to have burnt oil and tranny fluid. Hope it helps.

Here is a chart and some info for you guys to look over and troubleshoot with. You might also want to look at the torque converter clutch solenoid and its connector and wiring. BTW, this information is for the THM 700R4 transmission in the 5.0L & 5.7L TPI cars. I can post the information for the 2.8L MPFI & 5.0L TBI if needed. Also, for those of you who have it. The Throttle Valve Control cable controls the shift points and line pressure, if it is out of adjustment, kinked, bent, or binding, it will give you problems.

I have been having similar problems with my cars tranny (Th700R4) for a few months now. I hope its not causing any more problems. I think it is the torque converter, but those are big bucks. Anyone want to give a loan to us?
