Fondest Memory Of Your Car?

I was thinking about all the stuff thats been happening (or will be happening) lately in my life, like graduation in about a week, getting my first real job about a month ago, all the end-of-grade-12 parties... and I realized that some of the best memories I have, my car has been part of it in some way.

So it just got me curoius, whats your guys's best memories of your cars, or experiences with your cars?

Sitting in my garage, turning the key after swapping the carb, and watching as fire engulfed my distributor. Then running like hell for the door, afraid spark would go down the fuel line and to the tank.

So started the 11 month and counting restoration project.

Not fond, but it is my strongest memory.

the first time I saw my car. the person I bought it from lived about two hours away, she agreed to meet me half way at a gas station; when I saw the car I was almost speechless. I saw the T-tops, the spoiler, and just a butiful car. the second I saw it I knew I had to have it, $3k later it was mine. belive me it was love at first sight. I also consider her (my car) my reward for putting up with 4 years in a #@%^%^@$$@# high school.

I would have to say with my first camaro, (88 sport coupe) it was in mint condition, i was in high school, and back then it was really pimp to have a car like that, ( like 1996 or so) and i remember going on dates with it, girls all impressed, just the felling of a really clean muscle car and going out in it on the weekends, that was a good feeling...

("Also this car was stored til the weekends the whole time i had it, and one thing i came to realize no matter what anyone says, is you have no idea how much you appreciate a car, how much it feels like a ferrari, when you dont drive it everyday, thats another good feeling... priceless") (just my .02)

I know that feeling... I hadn't driven my Z28 for about 8 mos (winter) and was used to my moms '00 Sebering. Damn, it was such a welcome change to have it back

My best memory has to be hearing the freshly-installed 350 fire for the first time... the swap took about 2 weeks, and the 305 before it was as sick as a dog (surprised it ran, after seeing it apart, lol)... it was such a beautiful thing

1990 IROC-Z: The day I bought it from Tim, standing in the driveway as he showed me all of the mods he had done, and how he still kept the car looking stock! I was completely in awe.

1992 Formula: The day I saw it at the dealers lot. I knew I had to buy it.

Getting a phone call from my Chevy dealer, telling me the transport just pulled off the turnpike, and would be at the dealership in 20 minutes. Watched them unload my Z-28 off the transport, then the Dealer gave me the keys and said " you take it into the garage so they can prep it for deliverly". Two hours later my baby was home.

After my dad drove it home (I was driving his car, because I wasn't very good at manual yet), looking at it in the driveway. Then me and my brother got in going to go for a ride. After rolling it down the driveway and into the street because the parking brake went and not being able to start it because the battery was dead. I litteraly put a new battery in the car within 10 min of owning it. hahahaha.
Also, everytime I came home from school to see my car sitting in the garage just the way I left it. Looking like it was saying "Please drive me."
Oh yea and letting my girlfriend (fiance now) drive it for the first time. She wasn't busting through gears or anything, but she didn't do bad and only stalled once. And she looked good behind the wheel

Wanted one bad for 5 years and in '94 finally got a '92. It sure looked good sitting there on the lot. The two hour drive back home was great as I listened to that V8 and punched it around a bit though my mother told me to watch it. Stopped to eat at Braums and I stared out the window at it the whole time. Not long afterwards, my father and I took it out for a top speed run while it was still under warranty and that was fun. Many a lunch break was spent in that car and all my first dates. The original idea was to later trade it in on a "superior" new Z28 when I could afford one but that never happened. I hope to never part with it.

seeing it sitting on the lot (dealers lot) I so wanted a T/a but my husband wanted me to have a Camaro. Went looking at a newer 95 T/a & saw this white 3rd gen Camaro sitting down the line. Walked over to it open up the door & Knowing I had to have it.
6hrs later driving it home.

Then the next one was getting a 14.66 in the car down the 1/4 mile after some SLIGHT mods.

my fondest memory is when I first bought the car, (it looked horrible and didn't run) sitting in the drivers seat pretending to run through the 5 speed and wishing I really knew how to drive a stick. (I was 18 at the time-24 now).

Got the car running and then proceeded to learn how to drive the manual over the next several weeks. Couldn't pick a cooler looking car to learn how to drive a stick in.

Also a good memory of seeing my friends face when I told them I bought a firebird.

I got what is now my fondest memory of this car... Last night I just finished the custom made exhaust that I made for my Z28. This system has been in the planning stage for about 6 months now, and is finally done. The muffler is not really 'broken in' yet, but it sounds like hell on four wheels.

Anyway... So after I finished that, I drove it over to my friend's place so he could check it out. When I fired it up for him it settled down to a nice, wet, rumpity-rumpity idle, I could see his knees shaking

He was impressed to say the least, and I got a few compliments from the ladies at school this morning about the sound too!

First good memory.....after drivin a ratty 90 rs thru hischool and having just graduated i hade too much time and money on my hands and was lookin for a new ride....preferably a 91z w/L98....only problem was every one i found was about 5 hours away and about 8 to 10 grand and that was a little bit more than i was lookin to spend.... Then one night my mom makes this kinda off hand coment that a dealership down the road from her work had a car that looked like mine and was red.... either a camaro or firebird she didnt know wich... so me and my frien derrick go out for a cruise a couple days and we had some free time so we decide to check it out..... As we pulled up to the dealership the first thing i could see was the hood blisters and we were both like OMFG its a 91/92... as we got closer and i could see the price 5800 on the windshield i got a little aprehensive and made the comment.."its gotta be a 305" we pulled over and parked and it was at night time so i had to get right up to the glass on the windshield to see through and low and behold there it was...THE MIGHTY vin8! a cople days later she came home with me

Second good memory..... After spankin the local import guys too many times to count one of the local asians showed up with his civic hatch and his new NOS kit... i had heard some talk about this car and knew i would at least have a decent run (they were claimin 13.6 and at the time i had run a best of 13.9) But being the sportsman i am i asked if he would care to place a small wager on our run....and after talkin him into it they say "we have to go to a time machine and get cash, wait here well be back in 30 min." so after about an hour of waiting with the suspense building we finally see em coming.... When they pulll up my jaw drops.... looks like they got a set of drag slicks outa that time machine and now im starting to worry. We go out to our normal spot and the crowd was about triple what it normally would be since everyone in town thinks they are about to see me lose for the first time in about 2 years, all the domestic lovers grouped up on one side of the road at the finish line, and all the import fans on the other... we both do a quick practice launch on the way down to the starting line and get lined up.... When the flagman drops i do my usuall perfect launch wich always puts me about a car length in front right off the getgo...but with those drag slicks at 7500rpm shootin NOS he pulls 2 car lengths right away and we stay like for about the first 800ft... hes not pullin away im not catching up.... then i slowly start pullin... about 300ft before the finish line i start pullin like hes standing still (seriously thought he broke) and im like GO BABY GO..... As we came across the line his nose was about at the back of my front fender and out of my periferal vission i see about 25 kids jupin in the air and just goin NUTS....I almost go off the road cause im all alone in my car screaming at the top of my lungs "YEA BABY YEA" and pounding on my dash so hard i cant believe i didnt break it.... after we get parked i walk up to the other guy with a big smile on my face "ran out of spray huh".... and for once in my life after winning a race there were no excuses his response was "no man, just not enough top end for ya" what i wouldnt give to have that one on video!

Hmm, there's a few!

Firing up the "new" 350 in my 84 Z28 for the first time. Cool, yes, but it was the first time I ever worked on a car. Never did an oil change, plugs, etc. till then. I yanked the L69 out, T5 out, brown interior out, and the 3:73 singletrack out... to replace it with a 350, WC T5, black interior, and a 3:23 posi. The only help I had was the 'net, Chiltons ( ), and when I actually removed and dropped in the engines. That was the best 2 weeks of my life... too bad memory # 2 happened...

#2. Taking my fully rebuilt 84 Z28 out to get a paint estimate (not kidding either!) and getting rear-ended while stopped for a school bus unloading kids.

#3. Test driving my 88 Iroc at the Air force base I bought it at. After my 84 Z28, this car was insane! (my Z28 wasn't tuned AT ALL!) TPI, SFC's, lock-posi, mint interior, etc. etc. It really was love at first sight. Too bad that love is blind... exspecially with 3rd gens

My first car was an 85 Z28. I wanted an Iroc-z with T-Tops, but settled on the 85 because it had a TPI 305 and low miles for a good price, but was a hard top and also not an Iroc-z.

My neighbor's son in law had a really nice 87 Iroc-z. I told him if he ever wanted to sell it to give me a call. Naturally i never heard from him.

One day I pick up the paper and there is an 87 Iroc-z for sale. I go and look at it and it's my neighbor's son in law's car.

Well it's my car now!

I called the guy up, and he told me $600 for the car..

It looked like hell, but it was the most beautiful sight ever..
No front end, radiator, window was down and it was snowing out.

I asked him if it ran, he said that he hadn't started it in over 2 years, it just sat..
We went and grabbed a battery, he used vice grips to hold the torn cables to the terminals, and i sat in the drivers seat, and turned it over..
Fired right up, and it didn't miss, or knock or anything. Then i checked out the odometer.. 42,000
The fondest memory was definitely sitting in the drivers seat and firing my baby up for the first time. I never forget the way it sounded, and smell, and freezing my ***** off didn't even matter!

Let me start with my 84 Z28 HO: It was the first car I ever bought, best hands on ever in manual tranny (T5 broke down 5 times in one month)

85 IROC: Best and scariest donut I ever did . I was driving my car to pick up my girlfriend, that day it was raining like crazy and my tires were bold. I was doing about 50MPH on the freeway and all the sudden I lost control and spun two 360s in the middle of the freeway.

86IROC: I bought that car at the auction for $475, the previous owner messed with the wiring harness and for some reasons he changed the wiring to black, white and red wires. I spent two days to figure out the wiring system in car, finally I got the car running and i drove it about 2 miles then black smoke came out the dash in the passenger side Oh my *** the car is on fire. Matter fact that was my first time calling 911
Here is pic of the ECM

picking up my 1987 Iroc-Z this past August. Me and my friend drove about 20 hours from Georgia to Massachusetts, for a 48K mile Iroc I had bought on eBay.

my fondest memory was pulling up to the guy's house at 9:30pm after a 20 hour drive and seeing my new, freshly washed and waxed, low mileage Z sitting there in the moonlight. took the t-tops off and went for a late night summer cruise in my new car. sigh..

the day my 87 camaro decided to die, driving down the high way and the lower radiator hose burst and the engine almost locked up. I kicked the **** outta my fenders and tires that day.

But because of that i now have a 89 Iroc Z that is currently stripped down to nothing but wheels and paint. And an LT1 engine about to head over to the machine shop to be cleaned up real nice.

This isnt my fondest memory but this is my funniest one. One night my and my freind Matt stayed at our freind Brandons house while his mom was out camping. Brandon had the bright idea to throw a water dinamite down the toliet, it blew apart.

So at 3:00 AM we decided to go to wal-mart in my camaro to try to find some real good super glue to glue the toliet back together. While we were out we decided we were gonna so mess with another friend of ours 80 something honda civic. Brandon getts the idea he wants to be all stelthy so he dressed in all black and put chocolete icing all over his face.

So we get back in my camaro and start to head over there im crussing down the road and a cop is coming in the opposite direction and see's me freind covered in chocolete and pulles a U-turn and follows us for about 3 miles before he turned on his lights. I pull over and the cop comes up and looks over at my freind and said "What the hell, get outa the car. They ended up serching the car and us for drugs and after not finding anything, he called 2 more cops over his radio to come over and see this.
They got there and said that it was to funny to pass up and they got a camera and took a picture of my friend with the chocolete all over his face. Then they let us go.

Now that picture is hanging in the front room of the police station and the cops all know him as chocolete boy. And I can't drive after midnight without police following my camaro.

Man, this has been a pretty entertaining thread. I think that my best memory was the night that I got it. I had haggled a good price out of a used car dealer, but I had to wait for him to fix the A/C. So two days later about dusk I sitting on the front porch and see my dad round the corner in it. I fell in love. I cruised that car until 4:00 am that night, and it was great. To tell you the truth, sometimes i feel like a kid still in it.

I got a great new memory tonight I was out cruising with some friends and we went to the Taco Bell drive thru. I gave them the order and the girl said "Sorry I cant hear you over your motor."

Well the fondest memories for me come from my old '89 IROC, the LB9 5-speed. My three very favorites immediately come to mind. (It's long, sorry, heh. Sit down and enjoy the read ).

First: Less than a week after I bought it I just had to test out how much better it handled than my previous '85 Berlinetta.
About 5 miles from where I lived in Oklahoma is a twisty back-road leading to the lake and campgrounds. The speed limit is 35 mph, but at one of the corners it is 15 mph because it is a rather sharp, tight turn that lasts for about 130 degrees with lots of trees quite close to the road. That night it was about 11:30 and no one else was out there, so with that particular corner in mind I set out towards the lake. I drove in a mildly-easy manner on the way to the lake to get a good feel for the car, and on the way back I went for it. As the corner was coming up I downshifted into second from my 35 mph cruise and put the pedal to the floor. coming into the corner felt great so I kept into it. It was all happening so fast but I remember my body being pulled further and further toward the passenger side of the car, and all I could see was TREE TREE TREE TREE TREE TREE right there less than a stones throw from me and my car. I couldn't let up though, I had something to prove, something worth dying for. I focused my attention back on the road as best I could and finally as the road was about to straighten back up I looked down at the speedometer with my foot still planted. 65 miles per hour and accelerating. I let off as I came out of the corner, then the powerful brakes (haha) quickly halted me back to a slow cruise. My heart was pounding faster than ever as I was panting for air. I thought for sure I was going into the trees, but my car was just begging for more. It truly did scare the ever-living sh*t out of me , that was a moment I'll never forget. "Yep," I said to myself, "this car is going to be fun!"

Second: It was about a 6 months later one fall night and I had moved to Pheonix, AZ to live with my mom. One night I was hanging out at my friends house when there was a party a few houses over. There was this red '96 Mustang GT 5-speed I saw pull up that sounded really mean. I was thinking "Ooh, dinner". We stayed out for a while then saw the guy and his girl get back in the Mustang and fire it up. My friend and I looked at each other and both jumped in my car to chase after him, T-tops off and all. As I was following I saw stickers on his rear window that read "Flowmaster", "MSD", "K&N", and a few others. We got out onto a main road as the next light turned red. I quickly jumped in the right lane to end up next to him as we stopped first at the light. I revved with all my free-modded 305 TPI fury, he revved, and his buddy in some old Monte Carlo that was in the right turn lane revved and said "Git it!" then he turned and drove off (lol). We both revved some more as I looked over at him and his girl both giving me a smirk like "We're about to own that old Camaro, fool". I gave him the smirk back and me and my friend laughed. I watched as the light on the cross-road turned red, then held it up to about 3000 and so did he, then as the light turned green we both let 'em go! I had a pretty good launch with some slight tire spin. It sounded like he did too, but I had him by about 1/2 car across the intersection then I chirped the tires into second, pulled a little bit more. I glanced over to see his girls face no longer smirking, but eyes wide with discontent Third gear came up and I was still pulling, then fourth, and I let off at about 110-120 or so with him about 1-1.5 cars back then he let off right after me. He went flying by as my friend and I were wailing in celebration at the top of our lungs, waving our hands high into the sky, with smiles permanently glued on our faces. He turned off on a side street and I never saw him again. As slow as that race was, it truly was the best race I've ever had in any of my cars.

Third: This one has a bit more of a sad tone as it was our final drive together. It was about a year later and I had moved to Fort Collins, CO with my mom. Eventually the thirdgen-bugs started adding up and the car was leaving me stranded more and more often, and I didn't have the time, money (or knowledge at the time) to keep fixing it weekly. This was about the time I fell in love with my friend's fast black '98 Talon TSi (which smoked my IROC BTW), and I needed a more reliable car. I just had to get a Talon being newer, more reliable, and having lots of potential, so one ended up in my driveway a week before this story ends. The Camaro was un-officially sold this last day of our time together. One misty, calm, fall morning I push-started it out of the lot where it had been sitting for three days with for sale signs in it all cleaned up and beautiful looking. I took out the signs, then decided to take it for one last drive before we parted forever. Consequently the car decided to run just about flawlessly this time (a rare occurance). I headed for the foothills of the Rocky Mountains that are just west of Fort Collins. I took the car up into the twisty, dew-covered early morning mountain roads for one last cruise. We went over the dam, past the lookout spot, around the peaceful reservoir, and back into the quiet valley roads while I listened to the beautiful music of the humming exhaust before we eventually made our way back down the mountains into town. It was during this drive that I realized I had made a mistake and would miss this car forever as my eyes started to tear up. It was way too late to turn back now though, and I decided to just remember all the great times we had. That day I gave the keys to my mom and as I left for work in my new Talon I saw the Camaro slowly fade into the rear view as it awaited pick-up by it's new owner. It is an image firmly burned into my brain that I will remember for a very long time.

I've had my new '89 IROC for about 9 months now but haven't driven it all that much due to problems and fixing it up. Hopefully one day we will make the same types of memories, and this time we will spend a very long time together. I hope you enjoyed reading about my favorite car (and that you're still awake )

Included is a picture of it the last week I had it, in the same spot I saw it last. It's not a great scan from a polaroid, but you get the idea.

My favorite memory is the process of buying my car.

Before the firebird, I had always wanted a trans am or firebird or Camaro.

Sadly I was unaware of this forum at the time.

Sadly as well, my car searching skills were lacking. I looked in all the wrong places.

I was determined to find a Firebird or Camaro. I had a bank note for 5,000 dollars. I had V8, T tops and dual exhaust in mind.

After seeing some sadly trashed camaros and firebirds, I came across an 84 RS with a 305 HO engine, and an 89 Firebird with the 2.8er.

I wanted the engine in the RS, but it had mega electrical issues (Which I now know how to fix) and there was large emerging rust issues.

So it turned out to be the Red 89 bird.

The bird was at Golen Mile Motors in Surrey BC. Tag price was 7999.99 sale form 8999.99.

Dad and I spent about two and a half hours argueing the price with the dealer. The car had 207,000 kms on it. But it had been well cared for.

Seeing as they had issues with a dirty chip on the key and starting issues therefore, and they made the mistake of saying they wanted to get out of cars and into trucks. When the dust settled and the guy bulged many a vein during many "Trips to call his boss" we got the car for 4750 plus transfer fees. Worked out to 5000$.

The car needed a tuneup badly. But it still had a few *****.

One day I will have a 3.4L in there and all will be good.

Second memory is when the car figured it would die, and it left me on the side of the road. a few hundred KMs from home.

The one and half months of working on it taught me what I know now. The day it finally fired up was the other best memory I have.

More to come I am sure.

About 10 years ago my father was working in the assembly line of the Van Nuys Firebird/Camaro Plant when he got the news that the plant was going to close and move to Canada for the Fourth Gen body style. Appropriately the employees had a going away BBQ for the Plant/Cars. Since my father knew the security guard personally, I was the only child allowed into the plant for this occasion. When I came to the actual assembly line the last F-Body to roll out of that plant was being dipped into the paint bath; later on I observed the drive train, suspension, and interior being installed. As the car was being finished off with the trim former employees approched the rear end and hung a sign which stated "The Heartbeat of America stops here" and was signed by every employee who ever helped assemble an F-Body from that plant. Needless to say this was an emotional day and I realized then what my father had been a part of. As I sat in that Beautiful Convertable Z/28 for the Dyno test I knew that I had found where I belong; from that day on I always felt at home behind the wheel of an F-Body. These cars are in my blood, they raised me and they are as much a part of my life as my parents, wife, or children are. I have owned three different F-bodies and will always own at least one. Everytime I am around my car it brings back that memory and continually renews my appreciation for the cars and people who built them.

my fondest memory has to be the day my car was finally fixed and i heard her run normally for the first time ever.

when my parents and I looked at the car, the guy had just done the engine swap and said he had it looked at due to a rough, very rich idle. so, we figured that hell if it needs new injectors, we can get new accell ones for like $300/set and that'd be cool. so my parents got it for me for christmas.

in april, when the car was on the road, man..i found out quick it needed more work than we thought. new chip (the idiot before was running the 305 TPI with a damned 4 cyl chip!), some wiring, new intake gaskets, and egr valve. oh, and the injectors just needed a good ol' fashioned cleaning

so when i went to get her, i asked can i start it inside, and the guy said yeah go ahead..so i did. man, what a great feeling watching the rpm needle lightly dance around 1000 rpms..no SES light...no gas smell....ahhhhhhhhhhh that night i think i was out all night just enjoying the car's smooth running.

close 2nd..first date w/ my current gf of 2 years,soon-to-be-fiancee (and if i can make it happen, yes i will propose in the car

the day i saw/bought my bird, i remember it was a sunday afternoon at around 4 o'clock, my,the missus, and the kids were yardsaling in our old 87 bronco2, and i saw her/it sitting there, it had no headlight ***.,no t-tops,notailights, and no gauges, plus no front seats, lol, i asked what they were doing with it, and the kids dad said they were junking it monday, the kid had a formula and had no need for the other bird, i asked him if it ran, and he said yeah but it sat for a year, so i asked him how much he wanted, and he said 100 bucks, well they through a brand new battery they had in the garage in it, and it fired right up, then the kid comes out and says"oh i got all the other stuff for the car in the corner of the garage"well i paid him, went home, walked the mile back to his house, slapped my trucks plate on it and drove it home with the tops off, parked her with the intention of selling to make 300-400 buck, but the head gasket on the truck went that next sunday.i registered her tuseday and never looked back, still got her 3 yrs later and love her. other memories there but those r for anoher time, lol

STORED MY IROC!!!!
Moved to Japan.... While just out walking in my neighborhood, about 2 blocks from my house, I see a 1989 GRAY ON GRAY T/A. Could not believe my eyes.... Learned enough Japanese, to ask how much to sell and what was broken. Found out at 19,500 miles on it, and had been parked for 8 years, with a blown 305.
Bought it for $165.00 USD, and dragged it home with my toyota....
Next would be finding an abandoned 30,000 mile 1989 IROC, with a running TPI 350. Swapped motors, and been building it ever since..............
