Will my transmission hold up to a 383 stroker?

It looks like my car will be in storage until the summer of 2005, so I finally have the time to do some more major mods. The engine already has a very slight lifter tap, so I was gonna do a cam/lifter/rocker swap. Then I thought I might as well get new heads too, and one thing lead to another and I started looking at 383 stroker kits for my car So I am just starting my research to see if its actually something I can afford and if its something I'll be able to accomplish. I was wondering if my transmission will hold up to the 383. I just had it rebuilt about 4K miles ago. Its a 700R4 with a Trans Go shift kit, a 2400 stall, and a Vette servo in it- will that be enough or will it need more work? Thanks in advance.

Andy

700r4 is good for about 325 horse and 400 ft lbs, anything more is to much, but some last longer than others, build your own motor, crate engines are a lot of cash,go with dart iron eagle heads,or a seat of afr, these are the beast flowing heads out of the box, they power my motor 355 with dart 215 cc 64 cc, ex comp274 cam holly 650 dp rpm intake, best et 1/8 7.81 200 60 ft at 96 mph

im doing the same thing. built a 383 and am going to install it this december. i believe that it will get around 400 hp and 420 tq.(going to be dynoed this week and am very excited). i am going to use my stock rebuilt 700-r4 and believe that it will hold up fine as long as im not too hard on it. when it goes then its time to get one from pro-built.

Rather than make a new post asking the same question, I figure I'll just reply to this lovely post.

We've answered questions about a stock tranny.

How about a freshly rebuilt transmission witha TransGo shift kit, Vette servo, and .500" boost valve?

How much more would that allow it to take.

Ported and siamesed plenum
AS&M SS runners
Edelbrock hi-flow intake base
Pocked ported L98's
Lingenfelter TPI cam. 211/219 dur. @ .050"; .500"/.525" lift; 112* LSA
Hooker 2055's
3" mandrel exhaust with flowmaster 80 crossflow muffler.

People estimate mid 13's, and about 280hp to the wheels.

How worried for this transmission should I be?

id be willing to bet that both of you will be replacing transmissions within the next 6 months or so but you can rebuild it to make it hold ive seen it done before we used a th350 with a b&m transmission kit and a spacer made by b&m that u use a 700r4 output shaft in the transmission and the 700r4 tailshaft and it all bolts right up just fine ....

there are pics of the kit im speakin of posted by ljnowell and i have used the exact same kit it works great and no need to have a driveshaft cut and no problems with the speedo or torque arm ..

Did you end up buying a crate motor or purchasing the kit and building it yourself?

If you haven't bought anything yet, I would suggest going with a crate motor. When I built my 383--all together counting machine work-- I spent about $6,500.
I could have purchased a crate motor for $3,500 and had 3 grand left to buy all of the bolt on stuff.

My 383 long block set me back about $5500. That includes Scat 4340 crank, AFR 195 heads, Comp roller cam & valvetrain. I can't imagine a stock 700R4 just a with a B&M kit being very strong. My old 350 Super ram wasted a B&M kited 700R4 rather easily.

so, what's 350-400 HP gonna do to my TH400? all it's got is a shift kit......

Hopefully it'll hold up, it's been fine for the last 3 years but i've only put 4k miles on the car in that time so......

Andy,
i think you'll be fine on street tires(no slicks) with that combo--i know who built your trans and it should last a while.

i do not believe that a 383 is worth the added expense though. you can call my cell to discuss engine combos sometime, and to talk about your emissions necessities. your car will be close for emissions exemption soon, and i have the file for you to fill out for that as well.

How will his be exempt from emissions? Is it because he's got an 89?

If so, heck yeah. I'm up for that from too!
