Shorted Wire Help
Can anyone tell me what this wire goes to? I saw smoke coming from under the hood yesterday and thought it might be my alt. But found this today. The wire is exposed and is missing about 1/4 of an inch of wire. It is wrapped in electrical tape now so it doesn't ground out.

that is a fusalble link. if your alt does not charge, then yes it goes there. just buy a new link and install in orginal position. some times they just fail, and others they are caused by somthing more troublesome.
hope this helps

WOOPS! My electric FAN. It doesn't turn on until the engine is really hot. Like at 220. Yesterday my resivoir for the radiator was bubling over. The gauge was close to 220 but not there yet. It gets there when like driving around town. The fan wasn't on. That has never happened before. Then engine seems to be fine.

you may need a new radiator cap. if it does not hold the 12 or 15 psi it is rated then the water will boil at a lower temp than with a good cap. also, did you repair that broken wire? did it burn up agian?
thanks

if thats on the passeger side near the back of the block then it is the wire for the fan, touch it to a ground and if the fan turns on thats it. then hook it to a swith to turn on the fan when you want to, I did that with the fog light switch

the wire is up front by the battery. No I havn't fixed it yet I just taped it up so it doesn't ground to anything. The piece of wire that you can see in the pic sparked when it touched metal when I found it. In class last week we did a unit on cooling systems. He had us do tests and stuff on our cars. I don't remember if I pressure tested the cap or not. I know I did the radiator and the whole system.

zroc86- i just seen you live in central IL. im in decatur. were are you located? are you going to richland, or lakeland?
you deff. need to fix that fuse link because whatever that was the feed to, will not work. they are not hard, one end is bolted to a distribution block by the batt, and the other end you just cut and use a butt connector.
i would also have that cap pressure tested, also if you have a tpi, through a scan tool on it while at class and see what the computer thinks the temp is. the guage and computer use 2 diff sensors. if one of them is bad, replace it with ac delco, not the wells crap you get at the zone, or advance auto, they are crap, and can be up to 30 degrees off in both directions.
good luck
