Almost done, but here's the 4th gen console in my car

Hey guys, I finally got the damn thing in the mail. Took forever. It's the 98+ console, came with an extra shift plate, convertible top switch (not like I need it), coin holder, little storage compartment, 2 shift indicators, all kinds of stuff, all for $60 bucks I have it installed now in the car, I am just making a larger shift boot to accomodate the Megashifter, and I'm set. Here's some pics of it.

and

I just need to finish that up and my new seat belt receivers should be here this week. I've got alot going on with the car right now, check out the engine board and you'll see new pics of my project L98, and later this week I'll have my new 17in rims on there and my 91-92 High-Rise spoiler. Thanks alot for looking guys.

It's all good. Nah, with my Megashifter, it is longer than the stock one and I need a bigger shift boot to cover the whole section. Otherwise it'll look ghetto, lol. I'm usuing the same material as my seats in black and making a bigger one. Here's a pic of how the shifter lines up in the front. I had to cut the ash tray out. I have another shift plate here in the house that is all smoothed out and ready to go, the one in the pic was just a chop job to see how everything needed to be. Can't wait to finish it off. Thanks Mike

What is the part from that you used to house the radio/HVAC controls? Is that a Firebird piece? I've always wanted a 4th gen console but didn't know what to do about the radio.

Sweet car BTW!

Yes do tell about the window switches? Also did you just screw that firebird gauge pod right up there? It looks alittle silly in the photos.

Window Controls......

If you look carefully you'll notice that he cut out holes and installed the switches where the 3rd gens used to be on the console.

I want to do this now, but I have to think up a way to do the radio housing. The Firebird one looks a little out of place to me for some reason. It seems to work, but I'd like to try and improve on that idea somehow....

A question....

Will the stock automatic shifter have to be moved to fit or will it stay bolted to the floor in the stock location?

Now that i think about it, maybe I'll try and hide the window and hatch release switches in the stock ashtry location so that its hidden by the ashtray door....??? I like having things go unnoticed

I was given 2 shift plates with the console. The one in the pic was just my chop job to see how everything should be, I originally had the switches where they were in the old console, but I am moving them to the little storage pocket up front. I'm attaching a pic of how it will look, I just set 2 switches in there to show how it will fit. I need to finish the back piece to hold the switches in place and I'll be set on that part. Yes, that is the Firebird radio pod. And Mike, I thought I was going to make it through this post without a negative comment, lol j/k. The Pod fits pretty good under there and I think it's just the pic. I dremeled out the dash a little and made brackets to screw into. And then made a litte top piece out of my old console to cover this little gap. I could push the radio pod all the way back in there if I cut out the dash, but my TV unit is so long and with the wires, I'd have to butcher everything up back there. It lines up nicely with the floor and console. I am so glad I have cupholders now, lol. I just went down to the interior place today and got the material for the boot, should be done within the next day or too and you will get to see how it looks.

I know, I haven't been around in awhile, been doing so much with the car lately. I haven't seen ya online in awhile. Next time your on shoot me an IM. How's that motor running, still a beast?????

Nice work Dal! I've never seen one of those put in a Camaro before, didn't think it could be done but then I never thought about retrofitting a firebird center with the HVAC stuff either. Once the boot is all sorted out thats gonna really look great!

Thanks alot guys. I even used the HVAC controls from teh firebird too, thought the Grey controls went better with the whole layout, plus they didn't have the scratches and fading that my stock one did. Ya RSpeed, haven't seen ya in awhile. I was wondering what u been up to. Did ya get the car sorted out yet???????? I sure hope so. Shoot me an email or something. Thanks alot guys.

Thats exactly like i'd mount the switches....

I think I'd get new ones though, just so that everything looks fresh.

That's awesome! I love how you mounted the switches in the storage pocket vs. the ashtray. Hey, what do you think about some aftermarket (ie radioshack) red 3-way rocker switches there to match the rest of the red accents in my car? Or would it look to cheap...

Looks good, it looks to me like everything lines up good, did you have to make any modifications to the console to get it to work?

how hard was the install?

Everything fit pretty good, but it was a tight squeeze between the seats but fits great. I just had to make another hold about 1/2 inch up from the stock mounting holes in the console to get it to bolt to the floor. Other than that and the Firebird Pod, it fit right in. I think the rocker switches might be a good idea, but not sure which ones your talking about. It should look good though.

hmm... I am still trying to decide if I like the way it looks between the firebird pod and the 4th gen console..... I like the stock console alot and I did the cupholders where the ashtray was in the old console but the problem is you can't see the damn radio when you have like 20 oz bottles or fast food cups in there....

Driving around with the console tore up is getting old.... I dunno what to do....

Looking good,,but one thought....
how about some switches like this...
I saw these on crank and crome and checked into them,,got an e-mail address for a guy that sells them from there web site and he got back to me and they ended up being like $50.00 (aprox. for the 3 switch set) but you can get them in diffrent switch combos. and they are made to go right into the stock hole that you were planing on using anyway..I never got one,,$50.00 (aprox.)sounded high.
they look nice though.

I havent been on IM lately just usually check on here and sign off. Its summer now so I will be online when I am not driving my Camaro around the local hangouts. The car is a beast but a mellow beast. In other words its faster than most cars right now but its nowhere near full potential. Me and HrdRockA4305 took it down a back road and we could only get the engine to pull to 5500 rpms. It makes full power at 7000 rpms and can pull to 8500 safely. I think its my exhaust that is killing me, also maybe the intake. Just tinkering now. I will have it all figured out soon.

I hope you get that thing figured out. I finally started on my beast. Hope to have it done by mid-late July. Next time your on send me an IM. Ya, I just got the Radio pod, had to dremel a little not much at all, and bolted it in. Then drilled new holes for the console and put it in. Pretty straight forward. I might look into those switches, they look tight. I can cancel my order from Classic, lol.

Mine is an auto console too I won it on EBAY. I cut out the shifteer area and smoothed it all out and then cut out the ash tray area for my Megashifter. For s stock one I'm sure you can just cut out the shifter area and smooth it out, then have a shift boot made or buy one. Or you can look online at parts places and just buy a 6-spd shift plate. Any will work.

I was going to do the LS1 but that guy never got back to me. I got my buddies old L98 though for free, so I'm using that as my project. Should be Making about 450HP without the Nitrous kit when I'm finished with it Already started on it, lol. I'm going to enjoy doing this myself, and I'm going carbed

I put a '95 camaro console in my 'bird two weeks ago... I just ripped out the controls for the HVAC since it was busted and the heater was (and still is) always on. I think next year it will become a summer only car so I won't need the heater core anymore. Right now I can control temp pretty well by opening the vents. I created a mount for the CD player and stuffed it up above the CD tray... I still need to fabricate a housing for the CD player as you can see.
