Alright guys...

I've had my eyes open for a SD harness for well over a year. I dont want a painless harness or a harness by any other aftermarket company. I'd like a stock GM harness (not new from the dealer) because of the square plug for the passenger side fender wall. I have only seen a handfull for sale on classifieds across 3 thirdgen boards and I'm currious where they're all hiding. Does anybody happen to know of a junk yard with an abundance of thirdgens that I could have a SD harness shipped out to me?

As far as repinning my car was originally the 870 repinned once, repinning again would leave one hell of a hacked up harness so I think its time to start with a fresh harness.

Get you a MAF harness and buy the G.M. connectors and go to town. Thats what I am having to do.
I have the name of the place that sells the connectors at home if you want it.

 

How much do the connectors run?

I was always afraid of finding out because I assumed that I'd have to head to the GM dealer

 

You can't get them from G.M. for some reason.
The connectors are inexpensive but you need to have all connector part#'s ready and you have to place a minimum $25 order.

I will post the name and # when I get home from work at 3 a.m.

 

Something like that needs to be made into a sticky post. We all need connectors from time to time.

What I would kinda like to see is a group purchase of sorts.
This place usually sells in very large qauntities to places like painful,SLP, and anyone else that builds harnesses.
I would hate for them to stop selling to us little guys, if you know what I mean.

What I would hate even more is to have to pay over inflated retail.

 

Heh, count me in on a purchase. I can think of 4 or 5 connectors I could replace, possibly more.

The local Car Quest here carrys a full line of GM "replacement" connectors with pigtails.

Speaking of connectors, would they have the passenger head fan temp switch plug? Every Bird/Camaro I've ever worked on has a busted one with the spade just dangling in the switch.

 

I seriously think this needs to go sticky and we can gauge the interest of a GP for connectors.

Altho that guy is a Pud. He wants over 2bills for a Used harness. Just the Harness.

I paid 273 Shipped for Mine, Off Ebay.

That was acomplete Harness including the Headlight harness and some airbag stuff. Alot of Stuff I didnt need.

It also Had the Computer, EGR solenoid, and memcal.

Considering the Computer and memecal combined could run you 100bucks Used alone, I thought it was a good deal.

Either way, I don't see them going for much less than that.

MAF harness is another Story. See them going For about 150 w/ computer last time I checked.

 

Heck even a "Maf harness" would put me one up, mine is a modified 870 harness.

 

I've been buying parts here for years. No need to even GP stuff, they are resonable to begin with. I usually get ecm connector pins 100 at a time. The 24/36 pin ecm connectors were like $7-8 last order, and he has the OBD II bits.

For harnesses, I've bought numerous bits off of eBAY, and grafted them together. Just takes time, and pratice.

tpi_roc, I have a SD harness from a 92. I'd like to have a painless or something comparable since I'm trying to fit a tpi in a older car. What's this about the square plug on the drivers side though?

On the Fbody there is a square hole in the fender wall for the harness to come through (the ECM is mounted inside) That just needs to be plugged somehow if you dont use a GM harness.

 

Dialing (800) PACHARD will get you a Pachard catalog with all the part numbers, and pretty little pictures of what each component looks like.

Since you did ask for numbers

The ecm terminals are
12089660
The ecm black header connector for the 165, 730, 747, 749, 8256, 148, is a 12020756
The yellow ecm header is a 12048046

The black harness connectors are 12047946 and 12045575
The yellow one is a 12089591

GM and GMT use PACKARD numbers.

GM and packard reserve the right to change part numbers so if they've changed numbers that's just their doing, I've used these part numbers before and got the right parts.

 

The only reason I thought a GP was a good idea is that they typically sell in very large qauntities. I didn't know how they felt about selling in such small qauntities.

 

For older cars, this is the best harness available unless you want to go with a MAF unit. The Painless harnesses are usually PAINFUL.

 

There are companys that will make harnesses for you at specific tailored lengths to fit custom needs.

Most are cheaper than painless.

 

Hey tpi_roc, couldnt you convert a TBI harness?
I would think there would have to be a few of those laying around.

 

Its nearly impossible for me to convey how desolet and baren our junk yard are around here. I had to drive once 3 hours north and 3 hours back just to get A thirdgen rear, it wasn't even posi.

E bay, man, E bay. I got a complete '85 TPI harness (uncut) with ECM and MAS module for $100. Got big plans for that harness, hehehe.

 

Damn, I got two complete TPI setups including harness, dist,maf,ecm, and all the tpi hardware as well for around 250 each. might want to consider looking for the whole setup someone is selling and sell what you don't need on EBAY. BTW, I got a complete rear, drum to drum, with 3.23's for 25 bucks from a u pull it junkyard last saturday I also got a pair of t tops with a bag for $30.

The 730 uses 2 32pin and 1 24pin connectors right? (Harness ends) So according to the part numbers you have recorded that would be part numbers 12047949x2 and 12089591x1 ? Or are all 3 plugs different and I need

The colors are different on the 32 pinners. A 7730 has two black connectors one 24 pin the other 32 pin. The third connector is a 32 pin yellow in color, esentially its the same as its neighbor the black 32 pin. Its just so you dont plug the wrong 32 pin into the ECM. cheers, Bob

Ok, not the nicest adapter, but it certainly looks "painless" to install compared to swapping the wiring harness or trying to hack and cut the one in your vehicle.

I used and aftermarket speed density harness, from Ron Francis Wire Works.. I got it free from a friend of mine. I used the factory plastic piece.. just pulled the glue/filler stuff out of it, seperated the two halves, and ran my harness through it. Then sealed it back up. Looks like it came from the factory.

I have been scoping out wrecking yards, and specifically harnesses and connectors for early 90s 3.1 FWD V6s in J and N bodies. I have found that these harnesses are VERY CLOSE to the SD TPI V8 harness. There are some differences, but they can easily be changed to work.

Alternatively, you could cut the ends off the connectors to the ECM from the V6 cars and "experiment" and learn how to "pick the lock" of the wire pins. With a little practice, you can pick the lock very quickly (takes me only a few seconds to pull the connector out).

Once you feel comfortable, you could then "pick the lock" on the wire connectors from your 165 ECM connectors and reinsert them in the 7730 connectors that you practiced on removing the wires that you "cut" from the harness.

There are actual "picks" available to help you "pick the locks", but I find a small jewellers screwdriver works just fine. For the wire leads on the Weather Pack, you should get the proper pick.

 

Glenn thats what I am gonna be doing to the 89 Trans Am wiring harness that I have. I dont think that it will take too long todo and I get to get rid of a few wires too while I am at it.

I figured about 2-4 hours of working on it should do the trick in repinning the ECM connectors.
