A good way to change out proms.
Its always hard to get your prom into that little black plastic holder, but if you cut the sides out and use only them its easy to change out the prom. Plus you never bend any pins. Just put the chip in and then slide the rails in one at a time, for a snug fit. Its worked great for me.

It works fine, no problem at all switching on-the-fly... Same goes for the 040 unit... As long as you have the chip full of valid data...
you know if you just sqeuzze the side of the chip holder together abotu a 1/8 of an inch on each side the chip fall right out. ill never understand why its so hard for people to do this. if yr looking for really easy chip changes solder a zif socket on there and be done with it.

I don't find find it difficult to get proms in and out of the holder, but let me ask you can you do it with one hand, didn't think so. This way you can. I agree ZIFs are ideal, but they require work to install, plus your ECM cover will never fit on again. Now you can't tell me that you've never bent a pin, either installing it in the holder or pressing it into the ecm, because I did, thats why I do it this way. I have a spare holder which is uncut, I will use that when my tunning is over, and everything will look stock.
i have never attempted to put a chip in with one hadn. however i can get them out of the holder fairly simply. i just kepp working my way back and forth. it takes less than 5 minutes.anyways i think you just need to desolder the exsiting chipset and you will find there is plenty of room in there for the ZIF.
sorry for coming off the wrong way the pain killers im on for my back are pretty storng. i reread my post and i cant tell you i came off the wrong way.
much appologies.

No worries,
I'm burning about 20 chips a day, since the new motor is in, so you can see why I needed some fast way other than a ZIF.

i suggest getting a zif soket low profile type. also removing the stock socket is the best way to go. i have modeed alot of older ecms doing this.
get yrself some solder wick
a fine point soldering iron 20watt.
and good silver solder.
thats all you need
also be careful not to spend to much time on one pin keep moving on. takeing alittle solder at a time. lay the solder wick across the pins work pin to pin pushing the tip into the solderwick. the wick will help keep the heat form becoming to intense
