Bad News! :(
I took my 82 Z out for a spin today down Main St. A 03 Cobra pulls beside me and raves his engine. I let him take off, then I push the pedal to the floor. I feel my car jerk bigtime, pull to the side of the road and my aluminum driveshaft was bent.
It will be a while before I get my car driveable again but until then I will keep everyone posted on how its coming.
my car has approx. 1100 hp and 1000 ft lbs./tq.
What would be a stronger driveshaft?

First of all, how the f*** did you get that much power?
Seconfly, check out spohns site, he has some heavy duty driveshafts. An aluminum DS is only rated to 450HP I believe.

Jesss I would want a 6" diameter drive shaft if it were aluminium with that kind of power!
It's hard to beat an aftermarket steel one when it comes to strengh/cost.
How the hell do you keep the U-joints from exploding???

Was thinking the same thing...
So how did you wedge a 502 in that F-Body? (2:1 HP/CIN, that must of cost a small fortune)
What kind of transmission are you running?

funny i've been around cars and drag racing most of my life and i don't think i've ever saw a stainless steel engine, or even one that was 85% stainless. besides not rusting and being hard to paint what's the big advantage of using stainless? my guess is you had a block, heads, crank custom machined out of a chunk of 308 right? i've never had a LS6 but i've seen a few and drove one once or twice and i was thinking they were regular old gm run of the mill cast iron. i'd think the block would account for at least half of you engine so wouldn't it be stainless too? i'm so confussed.

With all that high-tech stuff you claim you missed the DS issue. Does it pass emissions?

Maybe if he had a stainless driveshaft it wouldn't have bent! Maybe some of that polished stainless includes a crank, rods and pistons. I wonder what the trans is made out of, sterling silver.
i've thought about this a bit more and decided to raise the
flag a bit higher. having been around alot of drag cars and a lot of drive line failures i've seen my share of broken drive shafts and have never seen one bend. if they start to go (bend, deflect whatever you want to call it) they just keep right on going and twist untill they seperate. the driver never has time to react in time to mash the clutch back in, or lift the loud pedal to save the parts.

Especially with that 1000 some odd HP!
Usaully if the driveshaft has a ding/dent in it that becomes the weak spot and under abuse it will just twist apart near the dent.

Just cruising on the street He's Not gonna have Heated his slicks ( If he is even Running slicks ) To get the Kinda traction w/ that sorta power to prevent anything short of a Smoke show when that 1100 ft/lbs went to the pavement.
To break/bend the driveshaft, the Tires gotta Hook )

let me put my
boots on. i'm almost positive a ls6 block will not handle that much power. but i have a similar story i have a factory moded rear wheel drive quad turbo vtec bored .120 over thats made out of carbon fiber and i pulled up to a AA top fuel drag car and he started to rev his junk then the light turned green and i blew him away i was about 6 cars ahead of him i'm sure glad i bought that non-fuctional 5 inch tach. what a idiot he never had a clue

I dont think its safe to step on the gaz of a 1000 hp car
on the street. Your U joints would be the first to brake
before the driveshaft.

Ede, I have seen a twisted/kinked driveshaft.
A kid in auto mechanics back in skool did a neutral slam in his dad Chevelle, it looked like a pretzel, of course, he tried to tell his dad that he was just driving normal.

That would be the stainless steel causing the funky torque curve.
You know this is a true story, I was out looking at pressure cookers, and there was basicly two types; a stainless steel & aluminum. Well thinking back to this thread, considering that 1000HP motors need to be made out of stainless steel - I jumped on it.

You all need to go back and read his second post again. He mearly stated that the engine was out of a........
And the barney bolt on stuff was made of stainless........
But I think he also forgot to tell you that it has a pressurized cabin and on-board O2.
Kinda funny though, there a guy in San Diego with a 84Z28, a blown big block, T400, 9" and so fourth and I know he makes more than 1200Hp.....but with that much power he couldnt hook it up to save his @ss....so I dont understand how he could really twist a shaft.?!! Wrong place for an alloy shaft. Might want to try a carbonfiber shaft.
You beat him up pretty bad though
Maybe it bent the last time he landed.....

read some of this guys past post! he spends the majority of his time in the car audio forum. and he doesn't know crap about cars.. has posted this exact same post in the exhaust forum (with the exception of stating what kind of car he is driving and how much h.p.) and has like two or three other totaly
post.. which were proven to be obvious
by the other people who read those...
i doubt this guy even owns a car...
