Most aggressive "legal" exhaust at idle?
I am looking for the most aggressive idle sounding exhaust. The kind of exhaust you here on an old chevelle, the kind of exhaust that says, you don't even want to try. I am looking for headers to tips...
I was looking at the SLP 1 3/4, hooker 2055's, etc... with a high flow cat, and a flowmaster catback exhaust, but I am open to all ideas and if you have sound clips that would be great.
My setup will be:
355
super ram
zz4 cam
Aluminum l98 heads
Everything port matched

your gonna need a bigger cam. a big nasty cam will make any exhuast sound like "dont even think about it". a cam will give that 'tick' sound all around the car and it just sounds badass. i have a rather small cam and it still sounds like that.

Who makes the most aggressive catback than? I haven't seen any catbacks with the flowmaster 80's? with SLP 1 3/4 headers and Y pipe, high flow cat, what is the next step in this equation?

Either way, which ever is their single chamber race muffler, that is the loudest. There's a reason it isn't street legal.

Count my vote for 40 series. From their website:
"The 40 Series™ is the most aggressive sounding street and strip muffler in Flowmaster's product line. If you are looking for the original "Flowmaster tone," the 40 Series™ is the one. The performance street and strip muffler will also generate interior resonance within the vehicle. So if you want to really hear your exhaust system inside the vehicle as well as outside it, the 40 Series™ is for you."
Yes the graph does say that the 80 series is louder, however... I have my doubts.

The 80 series is just a 40 series manufactured to be a direct fit onto Camaro's so in essence, yeah the 80 series is the loudest. But so is the 40 series. The graphs on Flowmaster's site can be somewhat confusing.

My friend got 40 series on his car. Mine was a tad louder outside, and ALOT louder inside. Just the way I like it

Mine is VERY loud inside and out. You open the doors and its super loud. at exactly 1000rpm the whole car shakes inside. the emergency brake lever vibrates like crazy...its so loud,.

just a question, but why the hell would anyone want interior resonance. shaking **** loose inside the car is not what a muffler should do. in my opinion the best muffler would be one thats loud as hell outside and hardly any interior resonance. thats why i chose hooker. loud where its supposed to be.

actually I did some major tuning and **** is no longer shaking loose but there is still resonance.
Look at the exhaust Im running its no wonder i have resonance.
My mufflers are bolted into my floor. LT headers and pipe almost against the floorboard its no wonder it vibrates alot. Its not that bad now tho since i calmed the car down some. No problem hearing the radio or anything but you can still feel the exhaust underneath you and from outside WOW is the only 3 letters that can explain it.

ive got no headers, dual random cats, 3", into 40 series two chamber flow master. duel 3" outs. its pretty badass. stock cam, manifolds, its still pretty badass. At the cruise nights here in the summer. the old guys come around and ask if its stock, cause it doesn't sound stock.

From what I understand, the new "delta flow" mufflers from Flowmaster are tuned quite well to reduce interior resonance while retaining very nearly the same volume outside. I've heard several people that they are quite nice.

I cant remember which flowmasters I bought.
I think my interior resonance is bad because the mufflers are bolted to the floor pan.
Plus the only "tailpipe" I have is a turndown turned towards the side...(needed as much ground clearance as possible)

I'll prolly get bashed for this but screw it. I'm gonna throw a borla exhaust on my 91 z. I rode beside a fourth gen camaro w/ borla exhuast and a mild cam. VERY pist off metallic aggressive sound. More mid and less bass than flowmaster, the only car i've ever heard like this. Flowmasters are a dime a dozen here like everywhere else im sure. I was just impressed with borla and thought i would give you another option.

instead of popping up the $$ for borla, just get a cutout, thats why the borla is loud, one tailpipe is basically a cutout lengthened
i would get one of those electric cutouts, from McCord, the valves that bolt to a cutout, and open/close from a switch inside
http://www.mccordcg.com/mpp/mpp.htm
something to look at, whats cool is that its not an all open/all close sort of thing, you can adjust it like 10 settings or something, im not sure, you can basically pick how loud you want it at times, and when you dont feel like being so loud, close it up. sounds cool to me.

That cutout is pretty cool, but how exactly does it work? Instead of having two tips come out of the muffler you have one?
What would it look like under the car I guess is what I am saying

i think this will work... but you get the idea. if you see what i mean one tailpipe is sort of fed off of an adjustable cutout. i dont think the price justifies it but then again it is all stainless steel... so its got its ups to it. id rather have the motorized cutout though... or put the motorized cutout on the borla system, so you could basically adjust the thing inside the car. stuff to think about.

Thanks for the pic I totally get it.
Why does everyone move away from the borla? Is it shear price? Wouldn't stainless pretty much be the best to put up on there?
It seems as far as looks go that is a great set and I would definetely put that cut out on there.

all the fourth gens i heard with it get a little pop sounding in the exhaust sometimes, what you get when it leaks. thats because in a sense it is leaking.. through a cutout basically... i dont think it sounds that great compared to a hooker catback. i think some people stray from it for sound, and some for price. basically because its not going to produce more HP than a cutout would... so people figure the extra 300 or so dollars can be put to use somewhere else. if you have the money and like the sound go for it. a few 4th gen LT1s ive heard sound like diesel trucks almost sometimes with it... i guess it depends on the car. just for reference im pretty sure you cant make a good comparison for the sound to it from an LS1 motored car, since it sounds a little different from the traditional small block... but i can be wrong. hehe
edit: oh yea, i didnt see the stainless question. in my opinion, it would be the best material to put up there if you have the money, since its a part thats exposed to all the elements of nature... right where everything gets kicked up, dirt, water, etc, and it wont rust going this route. the price for the borla is a little steep though for what you get to me, i think it would be a little more cost effective to get a completely custom stainless job. there was a guy over on the cz28.com boards a few years back who got a full mufflex 3" custom made mandrel bent system made and it sounded nice, very unique, single outlet, all it was was an intermediate pipe, straight through muffler, and a 90 degree bend for a tailpipe.

I like my idle sound, I dunno how it would sound with the stuff you're planning on though. Sound clips are on my webpage, link is in the sig.

I just bought Flowmaster 80 series But the rest is stock
I'll try to do a sound clip of before and after- right now I got a turbo muffler
I don't have a welder- so I have to find someone who will do it for me. Midas wants $75 just for install- that just 3 welds- Crazy!
