I put the flowtech shorties on my car about a month ago. They went on real easy and so far are holding up very well. Jegs carries the y-pipe, but I don't remember the part number. For $200 for the whole package it can't be beat.

Well, I would save up another $150 and get Hooker headers or even Edelbrocks.
The flowtechs are 1.5 primaries which will be fine for a near stock 305, but if you ever upgrade in the future, it might start to choke the engine.

I have the coated flowtechs (about $370 for headers and y pipe) and I am not satisfied. The fit was ok but the flange was bent and I had to torque the crap out of them to lay flat on the heads. I had the 6 layer or so percy's aluminum gaskets and the thikness alone of those stopped any leaks. The only problem really is that the collector flange leaks like a mother. I even bought the really expensive copper gaskets for this. I only hear the leak under hard throttle but it sounds annoying. It makes a wierd mettalic hissing sound. I got so mad that I ended up over torqing the collector bolts and bent the collector flange so I think I made matters worse. However, They look great (especially with the coating) and perform rather well. I really don't like the sound at high RPM's but I blame that on the stock LO3 cam and not the headers. I am putting in the LT4 cam in a month or so, so I will really tell you then how these headers are. I plan on getting SLP's down the road for quality and performance reasons. I think a gasket-less ball flange is the way to go to prevent leaks.

Does that stuff really work? I thought about putting some of that "exhaust mender putty" in there but that sounds so make-shift. The thought of jerry rigging something on my car makes me sick, but if it works...................

Axle/Gears: Yup -- they still work
My last set of headers on a 3rd gen was Hedmans and they leaked at the collectors. No matter what I did I could not get rid of that leak. Finally I stuffed and O-ring between the two pieces at the collector and the leak went away.
Might want to check into it.

Hmmmm.................
Well I already have TWO dead soft copper gaskets + ONE dead soft aluminum spacer/gasket per side. I thought this would be enough of a snadwich to squeeze the leak out. Geuss not. It is not your typical exhaust leak sound, which is wierd. but there is some unidentifiable noise comming from down there. The gaskets even have a commpressable bead around them incase the flange is warped, which mine is. So So So frustrating.

1.5" primaries aren't bad for a 350HP or less motor.
I'd say get the 1.625" from Hedman. If you look in the Jeg's catalog, you'll see they're ~$100 for 1.625" and another $100 for the Y-pipe.
Here's the description.

Look for that part number on this page.

And here's the Y-pipe
