Stock to Mods

My friend keeps bugging me to Mod my engine... I think it runs fine how it is... he says he can get 400HP out of it and I dont even think I need that much, let alone out of what I have... I just say rebuild a new engine so that its all new, but he thinks the block will be fine how it is with 107k miles on it... This is what he thinks I should do....

UltraDyne.com custom Cam
Edelbrock Performer RPM Angle Plug 64cc Heads
Edelbrock Performer RPM Intake Manifold

I have a set of Edelbrock Headers and I want an Open Air Element
I also want the Ultimate TBI mod if I decide to stay TBI and not go carb...

I really need to know what you guys think before I let my friend talk me into something I might regret... I think that if it runs, dont fix it...

There is no way you will get 400HP out of a 305 TBI. Now you can get one to run vary strong with about 250-275HP. If you are happy with how it runs now than just do some simple mods. Full exhaust and suspension go a long way and keep you smiling every day. There are a lot of members that have heads and cam 305's that run really good. Chuck on this board has LT1 cam and milled vortec heads and basic tuning and his car feels absolutley great. Its no LS1 but once he is tuned he will give my LT1 a run for its money. Most people will imediately tell you to jump to a cam and head swap but for a limeted budget go for exhaust/intake/free mods and a few suspension parts. You friend should be pleased then.

What can I do with the suspension? The exhaust is fairily new... Its all Legal at the moment... I have these new headers tho that a guy I know had them for his 305 TBI but sold it so now I have them... looks like Headers will be a bitch to put on... I hear that the Open Air Element is a good and easy way to do something too...

Open element is a must. You can do that mod for 20 bucks and follow the technical article on how to install it. Your car will respond great to it. On my RS I have done everthing to it besides heads and cam and the open element was the greatest mod to date. Anyways, check out my website and see what I have done to my RS. I did a lot of suspension to it. The car wasn't very fast but she would handle with the best of them. You can trick people by thinking your car is faster just by the way it handles and sounds. Back to the point. I lowered the car and added a panhard bar, lower control arm relocation brackets, wheels tires, and a strut tower brace. I was about to put subframe connectors on her before I wrecked her. Even without the subframes the car was flat out on rails. I used to scare myslef around steep fast corners. I can only imagine what she would have felt like with subframes. if I were you I would get sub frames as your first mod. I wated to long and my car handled so well that I actually flexed my frame a bit and the driver side door stuck out about 1/8". A set of subframes and springs will make a world of difference on your car. So in conclusion, buy some subframes ($185) and do the open element yourself ($20-25) and you will be very pleased until the performance bug bites again.

You will probably get between 240-290 with that combo if you really want to modify your car toss the 305, the possibilities with a 350 are endless there are only a few modifications you have to do to make it work and plenty of people here can help you with it , and on the ultimate tbi thing just get a holley 670 cfm unit .And if your not looking for to much go with just basic mods like full exhaust and suspension like somebody else said. good luck

No way ur gonna get 400 horses outa it with a stock TBI unit, 670cfm one i still doubt it. I havent dynoed mine yet but with my 650 carb im puttin on (swapping from TBI) im guessing around 325-350 horses.

i am with the rest of the guys here 400hp is a tall order for a 305.

my combo is as such...

Ported 416
Wieand single plane
670cfm Holley TBI
Ultradyne Racing Cam (210/218 .492 .492)
Hooker 1 5/8 Headers
Flowmaster 3" catback
ect, ect, ect.

and to tell you the truth , if i get to the 290-300 HP range i will be very excited.

well i plan to spray this combo, as soon as i get my tranny figured out, i really don't see the stock t5 holding up to close to 300hp NA, plus another 100 or 125 sprayed. and i dont' have the ***** myself to see just what the stock t5 will hold up to.

headers werent all that hard and they made a huge difference. i did them in my driveway in a toptal of about 4 hours. i would recomend the open element and then headers. exhaust. TBI mods.
