Help Tonight On T5 PLEASE!!!

alright, I ordred a v6 t5 from a company. Got it in today. After installing, I noticed that the trans mount is angled at about a 30 deg. Also, it came with this funny looking mount (part 14106633). Also it is cable driven speedo.

Now, I asked for a 90-92 version, they said the were all the same. Parts listing shows about 85-92 is interchangeable.

Don't all 85-92 have have a electronic Vss, not cable driven??

Please help, I'm going to call them back tommorow, and complain. But I want all my facts strait before I call so I don't look stupid.

This is the mount.

Basically, I'm asking, what did this really come from?? I'm thinking pre 85.

No, it's a liquid filled tranny mount. Like $300 from teh damn dealer. Toss that thing, and use an automatic tranny mount! My '88 T5 had that mount, until it broke, then I replaced it with the crossmember and mount from an automatic. Do that, with a Poly mount! Hell, replace the torque arm mount with a poly one, too.

All V6 T5s are interchangeable. I'm guessing the bellhousing might be different (mechanical clutch vs hydraulic clutch, perhaps?)

'88+ T5's are World Class T5s. Handle more power, and easier shifts due to better synchros.

Couple other points -

The FBody T5s are all offset by like 31º. The mount will go on flat - it's the shifter that is tilted (I have no freakin' idea why the heck GM did that)

Just bolt the tranny up with the mount flat... I mounted the automatic tranny mount + x member to the tranny, then bolted the member to the frame. You'll see the shifter mounting spot is offset, then the shifter itself is offset again to straighten it out. Stupid as hell, really.

Not all 85-92 had VSS's in the tailshaft. Firebirds started that a year or two earlier then Camaros. An 86-87 would most likely have a cable driven speedo. Some '86 Firebirds with the full gauge package had the VSS in the tailshaft.

I believe that the VSS and cable-drive fit into the same size hole in the tailshaft. As to the gear, I don't know if it'll swap between the cable-drive and VSS.

Arg... one other point - the VSS vs Cable.

My '88 Camaro is cable. The Firebirds went VSS before the Camaros. You should be able to pull the cable speedo thing on the tranny (I think it has a clip around it) out - it has a gear for it. Get the VSS sensor (I think that's what it is) for the 'bird, and pop it in, then run the wiring.

Damnit!!! I thought this would be a bolt in thing to my truck.

Now I am gonna have to make a new trans mount

any good Ideas how I can rig up this to be a horizontal mount?

Wonder If I can get that yard to send me a free vss?? Tell them I had/have to have a electronic vss output?

Going in an S10? Oh ****... I believe you'll need a different tailshaft altogether... I believe it's shorter than the FBody tailshaft.

Yeah, that looks a whole lot like a S truck to me, and a Camaro / Firebird transmission.

It's not going to work very easily, since the Camaro trans is designed to be rotated counter-clockwise viewed as in that pic, about 20° or so. You'll have to make some kind of an adapter for the mount; and I belive the shifter is in the wrong place too (too far rearward?) and tilted too, so you'll have to cut the hole and maybe bend the handle.

Yea, I knew the hole in the floor. no problem. Needed it futher back for my short arms.

I looked at it a bit futher, I'm going to cut the tab off the s10 cross member, and weld it at an angle. Or get some steal, bend it into an ^ and drill a hole in it.

I think I got it licked. Hopefully the electric vss will just plug right in.

thanks for the info.

LOL; yeah, now that I look at the pictures, that's not an f-body trans tunnel. Whoops!

What was the reason for the tilt of the T5? I read about it a lonnng time ago in Hot Rod, but don't ask me to find where that article is. Wasn't it to fit the trans into the trans tunnel?

The "tilt" is because the clutch fork needs to go in between the 2 transmission bolts; but if the bolts were in the normal place, the clutch fork would go RIGHT THROUGH THE MIDDLE of the gas pedal and the driver's rignt foot.

thats the VSS....

from everything ive seen, you can pull the stock cable one out, and drop in the VSS in its place...

86+ firebirds and 90+ camaros got elec speedos.

hope that helps somewhat. and good luck on your swap. manual trannys rule

Thanks mr dude. However, that is not what my tranny looks like in the rear. My vss is smaller in diameter where it goes into the tranny. Like .75" diameter.

I "think" I have found what sensor I need, for a D8G Tranny. Acdelco #213-196.

The tranny did fit in my tunned, BARELY. The top of it is like .5" from the floor board. However, that is where I had to cut it out for shifter to go thru the floor.
