4thgen aerowing done(ish)..
Not that anyone (aside from billsfirebird) knew I was working on it anyways. I finished painting it today and just nowstuck it on the hatch (only 2 bolts holding it untill I get the metal around the hatch glass repainted).
Switching from the Z-higherise to this was quite the p.i.t.a. but I like this much better and got a 3rd brakelight back
I certainly won't buy another one of these wings again... back to finishing the headlights I guess. Just felt like sharing some actual progress on the turd...

Thank you guys, I appreciate the comments. It was a tough call to buy the 4thgen (considering the price) but, I dug up a 3rdgen aerowing in pretty good shape and set it on the car and didn't like it one bit. I like this one 100% better now that there's paint on it.
demon.. plain and simple, the quality of this wing is pure s--t. It's thin, appears to be made mostly of resin and bodyfiller with thick primer or wannabe gelcoat to hide it all and has waves like the ocean. Although I'm comparing it to the quality of the A&A Specialties Z highrise I had, I believe that with price should come at least a hint of effort towards quality.
Also, if the rear deck is out of alignment (as 98% of these cars are), you'll need to redo it (hatchalign 101) or grind the crap out of the wing to get it to sit on the glass right. Even then, it still doesn't want to comply all the way (alignned hatch and still had to gring. The clips provided to hold the arms to the glass are also quite the joke. I haven't quite figured out what I'm going to do there just yet. It's either make some beefy clips or, use some 3M double faced tape.
Mark... just for you...

Thanks RIT. It looks like it's off the glass because it is. The wing is supplied with 2 crappy little ¼" wide 20ga metal 'J' clips which are ridiculously pathetic and, as you can see below, didn't even survive the initial test fitting. I'm working on a solution for it though (noted in my first post
).

Cool man, although I like the highrise wing as much as the 4thgen wing, but like you said you get the thirdbrake light. Looks pretty good too me.
Lol, why is the door gfx off again?

hrddrv... you and me both

doug.. you don't know how many pictures I looked at with the exact same thoughts... to be honest, it was Jim85iroc's
GTA that was the final decision maker. The wing not looking too far out of place along with that sweet white pearl was what sealed the deal for me. I also knew that I like the height of the Z wing but loved the wrap of the aerowing. The 4thgen was a good compromise between the two. I just wish I wouldn't have had to do so much work to make it look nice considering the price. I guess my standards are too high threse days.. :sigh:
(and yes everyone.. I will eventually one day put the hood on

Apparently since GTAuto stopped making them, the quality has disappeared. I was VERY impressed with the fit and finish of mine. All that mine needed was finish sanding, primer and paint... and I'm pretty fussy about the quality of stuff. I could see some minor ripple to the fiberglass, but far less than I've seen on the vast majority of other fiberglass parts. Hell... the body panels on my Corvette aren't nearly as straight as the spoiler was.

Thanks MC & brody <-(I'm quite floored by your compliment
). Sometimes I think I need those plates for real at the pace I go on this thing
I had mixed feelings when I first took it out of the box but, I've come to really liking it now. I ended up using 3M double faced moulding tape to stick the arms to the glass... that stuff is insane strong. The one arm that appears off place above is still but, not nearly as bad. It mostly now because the glass isn't the same on both side. Not much I can do about that one except live with it. The gap between the body line and wing is now even spaced at least.
Jim... I'd have to say you're probably right. I remember looking over old posts about the wings and only a few mentioned minor fitment/finish flaws. If I were to guess, I'd say quality was tossed out the window for the sake of filling orders out as fast as can be for $$. When I took mine out of the box.. the primer (or whatever is used) still had that just flashed over scent (like laquer surfacer) if that tells you anything. It took alot of priming and block sanding to get it worth any kind of painting. This would have been one very expensive wing if I didn't have some modest bodywork abilities (i.e. had to take it to be prepped/painted).
ps.. devianb.. I got all the drivers side gfx sanded and sealed earlier tonight just for you bud

I love the car. All the custom stuff adds up nicely and it's not obnoxious. It's all real subtle, stuff that 90% of people won't recognize.

is this off a 4th gen or is this aftermarkert
so whats next? the hood?
I just got finished putting the console, pwr window switches and hvac controls (still needs wired) in the car...
I need to find another trim panel to chop up for around the controls since the print on them is larger than the original opening. I'd hate to tear up the good one I just found awhile back. I may end up just making one if I can't find anything. I also need to spot in a piece of metal under the front of the console so there isn't a big empty overhang under the cupholder part.

Thanks for the comments and compliments guys. They are appreciated

My spoiler's clips are trashed also. I get a wonderful *tap* *tap* *tap* noise while I am driving some days. Drives me crazy. I have been trying to find a solution. I think I am going to custom make some metal clips and then bend them into place myself. Unfortunately, I have to pull the whole spoiler off to do it, which is a little scary. Lol.

I'm pretty much forced to making some new, wider clips for mine out of 18 or 16ga metal since the whole double faced tape idea lasted roughly 2 days. Here's about as complex as it gets...
Deadbird: A little off topic here, but I really liked your Back hatch tint. What % is it? Limo? What type? Did you put it on? I'm looking to do mine, but figured it would be easier taking it somewhere, but I don't like anyone touching my ride but me. Have you had any problems with scratching/bubbling?
Thanks...nice ride man...

Sweetride45: Do you know where Chicago Heights is? If you do theres a shop on the corner of Vollmer and Joe Orr called Mr. 50's Customs. He does great work. I know the guy.

The tint was done locally because I wanted it done right on the 'bird (has warrenty) and at the time, they let you sit and watch it being done (no longer true). It is a metallized (sp?) film and is 5% all around (tint laws not enforced around here but there are ways around it anyhow). When done, it was $120 but has since went up to neary $200 (for 5%). Fade/color change is nearly non-existant with a metallic film tint (as opposed to dyed, like Gila from Autozone which, eventually turns purple). Although, the chain part store tint (gila) has dramaticaly improved over the past few years and has much better color holdout.
I did the tint on my camaro for $60 (due to me f'n up a roll) and I wouldn't recommend a 1st timer attempting it on a f-body (at least the back glass). I've done 7 tint jobs before and the camaro had to be the absolute worst of all next to a friends 79 camaro back glass.

Their materials and quality of work are excellent. I have not had mine tinted yet, but when I get them done I'm going there. $$ wise I'm going to guess about $100, but dont quote me on that one, cause Im not sure.
