shaving gas cap
hey guys, look what I did. It's not 100% finished, but hey, it works damn well! 
now I can shave the ugly gas cap! gotta love smoothness.

yeah I'm gonna take more pics of the hinge I used. Right now, the light pop's up electronically VIA a door lock actuator.
It can fully open at 90 degrees no problem, and locks back in position when yer done filling the tank. I'm surprised to see how stiff it is.
When it will be done, I'll write a tech article on it.

but what if you somehow get a spark there with the taillight wires and the gas tanks flares up...that wouldnt be pretty. nice idea and good job though.

that's possible, but when Im filling up the car is never running. and when it's running the cap is on.

That looks great so far 
As far as i've know the tail lights dont have power when the car is truned off and the light switch is turned off as well. As long as you do that then you dont have to worry about a wire sparking.

Actually, if you step on the brake, even with the key removed, the taillights will still light up, so there could be danger involved if there is any kids around....

how do u modify the filler neck, cause u have o cut it, which would spark, or weld it which would get too hot. would u use rubber?

I think the lurking danger is the fact that the gas cap is vented. Gas fumes+oddball wiring fault spark=explosive mix.

I don't think the gas cap is vented. I believe some of the emission requirements are that the gas cap can hold a vacuum. I haven't had my camaro tested yet, but my sentra's gas cap got tested.
I could be wrong about the venting though.

I didn't mean vented in terms of outgassing the fumes but, there's still the chance.
I have to admit I'm perplexed at times how there can be any pressure (positive or negative) when removing the gas cap since there's a ventilator for the tank (does who knows what), the EVAP supposedly for capturing outgassing and, (to my understanding) a vented gas cap... between these 3 things.. how the hell does any type pressure build
Btw.. Spike... nice concept/execution. The gas door never bothered me enough to even bother thinking of that type idea but, I have seen it before on other cars and it's a neat mod to see that someone has done.

He could always wire the brake lights up to a switch. Then all he has to do is flip the switch and no worrys of any power getting to the tail lights no matter what.

I honestly think that pulling out the rear light to fill up on gas looks kinda weird. But hey at least it looks cool when your driving huh. I guess it wouldnt work like the olds and montes huh right behind the license plate? Great job!

my plan envolved using a new 4thgen tank (mostly for the baffling) and having a metal connecting pipe meet with the stock filler pipe using a marine fuel tube coupler... its not rubber, but it kinda looks and feels like hard rubber.

That is really, really cool. The gas cap never bothered me that much (plus most people won't notice it's shaved, they'll just think it's on the other side of the car

As for the venting matter, I don't beleive that our cars are venting thru the gas caps (I could be wrong here) but thru the charcoal canister.
I'm not too worry about sparks coming from bad welds or corrosion cause my car never sees rain anyways and I'm pretty good at welding!
I will post new pics of the pivot bracket as soon as I can find a way to resize them get them smaller... they are 110k? anyone knows how to do that?

you can resize the pics by saving them at a lower quality... or if you're on AIM tell me your Screenname, and you can send the fullsize ones to me, and i'll do it for you...
dont weld on the fuel tank directly... if you're reusing a old tank, it would be wise to fill it with water to displace any remaining gas fumes. also, i would run as much metal pipe as i could..... but thats just me...

i live in oregon, it is illegal here to fill your own gas, the atendants do it for you. most gas stations are cool and will let you if you have a viper or a corvette or are **** about your car, but some wont, those mother****ers spill gas on my car EVERY TIME!!!!! i always give the atendant a dirty look as i clean it off with tere windshield sqwegie. then they make some kind of "sorry buddy didn't notice" bull****..... i swear i am moving out of this state...

i bet they jackup the price for "full service" too...
here theres only 2 stations left in the entire part of the state that have a full service lane.... if you pull up there, they fill it..... but its 15-20 cents more a gallon!
