V6 Discussion and questions about the base carbureted or MPFI V6's and the rare SFI Turbo V6.

Anyone go thru smog with 3.1 injectors on a 2.8? (Or 3.4's on a 3.1?)

Anyone go thru smog with 3.1 injectors on a 2.8? (Or 3.4's on a 3.1?)

So have any of you with larger injectors on your v6 gone through a smog check? Even better, anybody with a strict smog check (like NJ or CA) where they run you on a dyno?

I've had those leaking injectors for years now, and inspection's coming up in January. I coudn't find low-mileage 2.8 injectors from the boneyards, but did get a 3.1 set (unknown mileage) for $10. I was thinking of sending that set off to CruzinPerformance.com for a cleaning, but I'm worried about emissions.

2.8 was 16 pound, and 3.1 was 18 pound, right?

I'd think the computer could compensate... doesn't it adjust the injector's pulse-width to adjust the a/f mix?

And if anyone has any ideas, let me know!! Thanks!

2.8 is 13/15 (some debate, maybe ask rich?)
3.1 is 15lb

I did run 17lb in my 3.1 for a few weeks, did run a little rich. I currently have ford 16lbs in it right now.

You dont HAVE to have gm injectors in it. Ford/Bosch design is suppose to be better. Maybe you could search net, find some 13/15lb fords, then go to bone yard and find them.

just figured it out...

(135x.50)/(6x.80)=14.01

Thanks for the info, Dale! Where'd the 17 pound ones come from?

Yeah I don't really want to use the Multec's at all... another bummer is that the 2.8 injectors from MPFI A-body'd cars (Cutlass Ciera, Buick Century, etc) are all Multec's.

How could you tell you were running rich? Just a smell of gas? Or did you run through an emissions check?

17lbs were when I had the 3.4 and working on installing it in my s10 last year.

I wanted to see how bad the stock injectors were, so I swapped.

Running rich, could smell it bad, occasionally would spit fluid out exhaust (no cat on car), Used more gas, plugs showed signs of running rich.

No emission ***** in my state (yet)

You can run any design 2 (I think thats it) injector in our car, aslong as the ohm reading is correct, and wont lean/richen the car out. Hell, even dodge/mopar injectors will fit. I had ford injectors in my dakota, I have ford in my camaro. Ohms are correct, seals seal, swap them!

Tom, Redraif passed with a fairly large cam and 19lb Ford injectors (used, from Pull-A-Part, cleaned by Cruizin Performance), with the old 2.8...it was cleaner than stock, even with 16 degrees of timing, and that was on a dyno test!

I'm using the 1995 3.4 injectors in the 2.8 set up.
I smog car as a 1985 2.8 from CA.
Just passing my information.
I assume I'm running the Multec, the shower head style injector.

I can understand if your cash strapped but why not get an adjustable regulator along with your bigger injectors???

Run a wire from your o2 sensor and use a $6 radio shack lcd volt meter to read how rich or lean your running and adjust from there.

"Here is a general idea at what the O2 sensor voltage output looks like. As you can see, the slope around 400mv, which is 14.7:1, or perfect combustion, is very steep. This is why only computerized fuel injection systems can really hold anything close to 400mv. If you're wondering about how a sensor can read oxygen content in rich mixtures where there is no extra oxygen, the sensor begins to act as a temperature sensor above 400mv.

"

LT1, they run on the Dyno out in Georgia? No kidding! Do you know what the test is called? We're the ISM 5015 test... 50% load at 15 mph.

But I know Karl's out in CA with an even more strict test then our 5015 test- but I wonder, it's a 3.4 with 3.4 injectors... did that help it pass? As opposed to a 2.8 with 3.4 injectors? Hm.

And thanks for the info guys!! I think I'll send the 3.1's out to be cleaned. And hell, if they don't smog up, I'll just have my old 165,000 mile set cleaned for "temporary" use... then put the 3.1's back in.

Yeah, pre-OBDII cars here get the dyno test; newer ones just get scanned for codes. I'm not sure what they call the test, but I'll check Shannon's last test to see what its called. All my cars are titled in a non-emissions county in GA (my parents house, only metro Atlanta counties do emissions testing now), so I haven't had to do one in a while. I have heard NJ and California are a lot tougher than GA, but still we passed with flying colors even with all the mods and 19lb injectors. We do have a Holley adj fuel pressure regulator, but didn't touch it for the test. I don't think you'll have a problem.

With 2.8's in the 3.4 I'd be way lean & probably have burnt engine by now......
DID my set up help?
Well, one result of the toughest CA testing one can have done....I had a zero emissions reading, my car is so emissions burning efficent.
My car goes on the rollers & yes drives slow, fast, then idle.
With common sense, just as enlarging carb jets during a larger engine installation, I (during my 3.4 swap) upgraded to the factory stock 3.4 "shower head" injectors.
I'll bet you'll do perfect with the way you are attacking your smog testing.

Gumby, how do you hook the volt meter to the oxygen sensor. I want to try that out, I have 3.1's in my 2.8. I think I'll be putting my old 2.8 injectors in for smog test time though.

I passed CA smog with 3.4 injectors in a 3.1. Passed with flying colors. It did set an occasional code 45 when I had the 700r4 but never with the T-5.
