Has anyone suicided the hood yet? If you dont know what i then, it means that the hood pivots fromt eh front of the car instead of the other side. Like on vettes.

Also, what would be needed to suicide the hood? I know hinges.

one- how would i lock it?
two-where would i lount it?
three-use gas shocks or hydrolics?


I think popping up somewhere, coming out of my car with lambo doors, then hitting a button and suddenly the door suicides open, ahhh that would be cool, then hit the button againa nd it closes the hood. Would that be awesome or what guys?

Far as gas or hydraulic shocks I think both would work. As far as mounting it I believe that the best thing to do is take a look at how the corvette is set up that way, and try to see if you can copy that. For instance does the corvette have two hinges on the place where it opens, or only one. And you might want to consider a lighter hood if you can only do it with one hinge, fiberglass hood. As where to latch it I know that a lot of cars even though the hood swings open suicide style that the release is still in the front there. Don't ask me how they do it, but I have seen plently like that. Or you could always get fancy and put the release in the wheel well. It would work if you had it far enough away from the tire. Just a coulpe of thoughts.

oh no...what's next...you want your wheels to flip horizontal so that you can acchieve vertical take offs and landings? Gas struts would be significantly easier than a hydrallic or pneumatic system, but then you couldn't "push a button and have it close the hood". Go to a junk yard and score some vette or buick hinges (I think it was a late 80's riveria for some reason?). It would prolly take a fair bit of fab. I wouldn't want the hinges resting on my radiotor support personally. and you would have to either fab/relocate your hood latch to the fire wall. And if for some reason you decided to go hydrallic/pneumatic, that creates a whole new slew of problems w/ wiring, pumps, tanks, and line routing. Also, it would be significantly easier if you used an aftermarket "Pin-on" hood. As they was a lot less than your boat anchor factory hood. If you want this done...save your lunch money and let a professional shop do it. I would suggest a street rod or low rider shop. Still won't be cheap.

As for answering your question

Fieros have "hoods" that open that way, and the release is still in the normal spot. Most cars that I have seen that open the hood this way have the release in the "standard" spot.

I agree on the using a lighter hood part, too. The stock steel hood is going to be a b****.

It would take some stiff gas shocks to pop it open like you are saying, and hard to close. I'd go with a hydraulic set-up myself for what you are wanting to do.

I could be wrong, but I think it is technically called a "clamshell hood" and not suicide like the doors, though the principle is similar. Or I could be using a term I heard from soemone who didn't know the proper name and used what it looks like

Anyways, this is a much easier propostion than the scissor doors and should come out easier/better. Not saying give up on the doors, but I'd do the hood first, and unless you do something like a rebody ala K-1 Styling's Evolution, don't worry bout scissor doors. Now, gullwings, that'd be awesome .

They say it is developed from original f-body parts.

I'd contact them or www.k1-styling.sk on how the door itself works. Just tell them you are concerned with how the stock parts would be worked/reworked for this purpose, etc, and see what they say....

they refuse to talk about it, give info, or sell just the hinges.

 

dont do it, unless you make the hinges bolt the the radiator support it wont be strong to hold up the hood without twistin the nose all around, even then, you have to reinforce the radiator support, in my opinion, to much work for that,,,

 

Someone here with a gray camaro w/4thgen wheels has already done the front hinged hood using buick (park avenue(?) hinges(this car's hood opens corvette style).

Buick LeSabre hood hinge, forget what year maybe late 80's early 90's. Seen it done on that twin supercharged Camaro that was on Popular Hotrodding TV
