Well I have been battling this thing for a very long time. But I think I have conquered it.....

This is what I have done and why I have gotten confused.

1st factor- Putting a Edelbrock Preformer Carb intake manifold designed for 82-86 cars on a 1992 car with TBI and keeping the TBI.

In doing this the TBI sits farther back on the manifold. The stock TV cable is too long. When attaching the cable to the TBI with the little black clip I was left with an extra couple of inches. So I cut off the excess and put a cable stop on it. (bad idea??) I didn't adjust the cable at all (like the chiltons says and the tech article) It ran fine for months.

2nd factor- After time and stress cable stops like to slide.

So my idea failed. The cable stop I put on slid a little bit toward the front of the car causing the car to run like crap. On the highway it was shaking and on the street it was shifting way too early. So I decided to readjust the cable stop sliding it back towards the firewall a smidge. Now the car shifted at 2500 rpms under moderate throttle. However upon trial and error I did manage to get it some what right and the car would run decent until it would slide a little more causing it to stumble all over itself.

At this time I also adjusted it like the chiltons and tech article said by holding the metal tab ad twisting the throttle to WOT. It did better but the cable stop would still slide forward causing the car to run bad

Thinking that I needed the stock cable with a real stop on it that was welded opposed to one that you screw down I decide to replace the whole detent cable.

I order a detent cable for a 92 install it (it wasnt that bad of an install) and guess what, same problem as when I first put the manifold on....an extra couple of inches!!! Then the idea kicks in "hey this is a manifold for an 86 car, maybe I should get a cable for an 86 car?" SO I get the cable install it....now its 3 inches too short!!!!! AAARGH

Now I am throughly confused. Is there a solution to this problem? Does The combo of manifold and TBI not work for a TV Detent cable? I came up with a solution of combining 2 cables together to make up the inches (its too hard to explain, so I will post a pic) and the car runs perfectly with nice smooth shifts.

How does that readjuster thing work? It can't change the length of the cable? So if the cable is too long its too long and if the cable is too short its too short right? The adjuster just changes the tension on the cable. Too much tension and your shifting at 2500 and too little your car is dumpy.

if someone can understand my babbling please help answer these questions. I came up with a solution but I am SURE that it isnt the right way.

since the detent was too long I cut the cable to the left of the black piece and put a cable stop on it

alright here is the only thing I could come up with....... its ugly but functional......I feel like i have blasphemized my car.....dont hurt me guys

2 detent cables + 2 big a$$ cable stops + JB Weld automotive/industiral epoxy = solution

 

Hopefully that will do well enough to get you home...
