removing ECM

hey guys, did a search, didn't find anythign right away however I searched at 1 30am in the morning, so i thought i'd ask. I have a 91 V6 RS. taking out motor and putting in a carbed 406. by the sounds of it, all gauges will still work. the special coded key thing might be an issue, and I have to ground out my TCC? also my electric speedo needs a special device to read foram a mechanical speedo tranny.

but anywho, I took off the panel under where the passanger feet go. and noticed two silver boxes there. so i'm taking one of them is the ECM/ which one is which? and what is the other one? do I cut, or disconect? rewire what? easiest to take off dash?

thanks a bunch

cheers

The key code thing (VATS) is a non-issue. In order for the speedo and cruise to work you'll need a four-out buffer box. These came in Caprices and f-bodies that ran TBI. Typically yellow, sometimes white, and has on the label 'four-out buffer.' About 4 x 4 x 1" in size. The VSS wires will go into this box and the outputs will go to cruise & speedo.

The ECM is the one in the plastic slide mount. Push the bottom of it forward and then pull it down. Has three connectors with a larger number of wires. May have the service number 1227730 on it, as long as it is the original. Otherwise it may have a different number on it.

Disconnect the connectors from the ECM. If you pull the harness out without cutting it up should be able to sell that & the ECM.

hey took some pix of what i think is the ECM, also you can see a picture of my finger pointing, and thas roughly to the other metal box which is behind the dash, whats that? leave it?

also another pic of me holding a empty female connection, possibly for the floor lights, for when the doors are opened? because I know my car doesn't have those, if it is, if I put the proper light and male connector in, should it work? or would the it not be rigged up and fused up for use?

cheers

4-out buffer? Up under the dash, I've seen them on both the passenger side and the driver side. Typically the camaro ones are yellow and the Caprice ones white.
