Paint-ALOT OF QUESTIONS-What steps to take-When is A good season?
I wanted to know the exact steps to take a crappy painted car to a practically show car quality? Also is there a "BEST" season to paint? Can I paint in my garage and if so what do I need? Is any spray gun good to use? How much paint/primer/clear should I buy by the pint? Do I need any special sanders to strip the car? If I am going to hand pinstripe it should I do that before spraying the clear? Any ideas on cheap paint that looks good and where I can find it?
I know that there are probablly tons of answears in the archive but I dont have the time to search through them all day to get exactally what I need.
I will be painting my camaro in the winter months around January-Febuary. I will be adding a low-rise spoiler where the stock one is now, a 91-92 ground effects kit - rear bumper and front nose, I was thinking of removeing the plastic trip along the middle doors.
I want to paint the car either red, or black with some kind of ghost flames but I dont know how to do that. ANY advise??

How should I repair a ground effect that is cracked? It is at an odd angle and I already have it sanded down to the plastic which is another question, is using chemical stripper bad? Not only for the plastic/fiberglass but for the metal? I do use the chem stripper made for fiberglass and plastics. Thanks!

the only way i know of repairing the GFX piece is to plastic weld then sand smooth then glaze and final sand... plastic weld can be found at any auto parts store i repaired mine with it and its holding up alright... i also made a brace to strengthen the GFX piece... anyway try plastic weld and if that doesnt work your probably going to have to buy new or a used one in good condition

Ok, I can try that. Sounds simple enough. I am not sure if any of the other peices are damaged, the only reason I found this crack was because the paint was not holding it together anymore. Thanks!

ok
to paint in your garage, get a ton of that plastic from home depot and hang it up in the garage, make it as sealed as possible w/ one fan blowing in , put a ac house filter or something on the fan to keep the air kind of clean, put a fan blowing out of the garage also.
go to any automotive paint place and ask for prices, you'll want a gallon of primer, paint, and clear, all the reducers and hardeners. just tell the paint place what your doing and they'll give u want you need, you DONT need any flex agent so tell them no if they ask you.
best time to paint is when its not very humid or windy, temp is on the paint cans.
best paint guns,in my opinion, are gravity feed.
to sand the car,get a dual action sander, i hope you have an aircompressor, you'll need it.
MBC isnt a bad paint for the price. it just takes a coat extra for good coverage..
if youve enver painted,i wouldnt suggest doing ghost flames,if you do try it,you do them in a pearl color of your choice, after the car is painted, then you clear last...
anything else you wanna know?
this is my last garage project.

Thats great!! That is alot of what I needed to know! I was concerned about how much paint to buy. I found a place on ebay selling camaro red metalic paint for 25 bucks for 6 pts so I guess 50 bucks for a gallon. Which should work out great but I am thinking of doing two colors and then the ghost flames to boot. I am still looking at ideas and toying around before I get too serious about it. Thanks!

first of all you posted in the wrong board, should be body board...... look at my post in body board "Project Resurection". it will answer most of your questions... i would guess this will be moved by the mods anyway but check out the body board there is plenty of answers there in my post and others.

The effects are the 91-92 style areo and the one thats broken is the one that goes on the door on the DS. I was thinking metalic red and black with like a V on the hood going down to the top sides of the doors going either straight back the top sides or finishing the V down the sides then adding some ghost flames on the front of the hood and nose. Like I said, I am still toying around with ideas. Now I just found out I might be going to Iraq so it may have to wiat a year and a half. Either way I will be doing the work myself. I plan on buying a junker while I do the work on the paint so I have something to drive when it rains. I will be riding my motorcycle when its not raining. Anyone got any ideas for a color scheme?

Thats cool but not what I had in mind. I wish I had photo shop so I could show you but I dont. I was thinking like a hard paint line V and with the center of the V back being black the forward of the V red then in the red areas doing the flames. But the more I think about that the more I am starting to turn from it. I dunno, I still have time to figure it out.

Of course these cars NEED flex agent. Look at the size of the covers on these cars... they are one of the most important qualities of a thirdgen.
You can protect yourself from YOU, but all those other dimwits out there that don't care about your car's finish will come crawling out of the rockpile.
The a##h#les that will creep up on you and bump you at a light.
The soccer moms at Kmart or the mall that whack you with a shopping cart while you just run in for some new music.
Who needs their proud, self gratifying paintjob that they spent countless hours on, all spiderwebbed and peeling cause of one jerkoff?[

damn, you dont gotta come out bein a lil whiney ***.
first off,do you know what your talking about?are you really sure what your talking about?do you even know what flex agent does? its actually for plastic pieces that are off the car,to be put on after the rest of the cars paitned.the flex agent only keeps it flexible for 48 hours.
another down side to flex agent is it discolors the paint a little bit,it fades different than surfaces painted without flex agent.
so before you come out here crying like a little girl and talking sh*t, know what your talking about before you start somethin,i was trying to give this guy advice, if you disagree, say it,dont come out all hostile,it just makes you look like a moron.

well Im sure he didnt word his post too great. I think he was talking about jerkoffs hitting the other kids car and stuff and not calling anyone out really. No need to get hot and bothered over it lets just help the original poster.
Anyway. Id love to see the progress. Id like to get my car painted but with the crappy engine its not worth the paint/engine swap right now.

Hey everyone, I dont mind the advise at all. Everyone has their own view on things. I am buying a book to get shipped to me about painting where I am sure I will find out all the facts of car painting. Getting back on subject with out all the name calling, I would like to hear what everyone thinks on a two color paint job. I would like to hear ideas on it and what you might think look good on a camaro with 91-92 ground effects and a low rise spoiler. I was looking at black, red, or silver but all in metalic colors. I am open to ideas for colors and designs. The reason I want ideas is to help give me ideas. Thanks!!

FIRST OF ALL... I don't remember whining about anything. I was stating a matter of fact, as well as my opinion...(which I thought was what these boards were all about...)
HMMMM... do I know what I'm talking about? Let's see... been in the business for about 20 years, an ex painter: about 10 years, ex assistant manager :about 3 years, now body shop manager for about 5 years, I think I know a little.
DO I know what flex does? yes I do..., do you? you're a little behind the times my friend, Most of the quality paint companies carry a "true" resin flex agent that is much more than a retarding agent. (Yes , you "WERE" right, at one time that's all they did, was allow for assembly.) You want the new stuff in the primer, the sealer, not necessary for the basecoat, because it crosslinks with the clear, and the clear coat for sure.
most of the other garbage you're spewing is old rhetoric from old uneducated, body guys and old painters that don't want to take the extra time to do things by the book.
"Whaddya need that s**t for? It really doesn't do anything anyway."
so before you come out here crying like a little girl and talking sh*t, know what your talking about before you start somethin,i was trying to give this guy advice, if you disagree, say it,dont come out all hostile,it just makes you look like a moron.
It was'nt an attack on you at all, why are you so defensive?

Kevin g is right it is best to use flex agent you dont have too if you dont take them off the car but wont be as flexible. I like to use it cause if you dont and some1 bumps you or somethin like he said the paint will crack. Flex agent isnt temporary maybe in some cheap *** paint but not in the stuff i use. I use flex primer then add the agent to the base and clear.

I think I will go with some high quality flex then. Well Gentlemen it looks like I am on my way back to IRAQ! This will be tour #2 and it will be at least a year long AGAIN! So I will be packing up my bags and leaving the family behind which also means I wont be able to paint the car when I wanted to. But on the bright side, when I get back I should have about 10-12 grand saved up. 8 grand is going on a new CBR600RR and the rest....on my baby! The camaro of course!! I leave in about two months so I have time to do some last prep work before I go like replaceing the window seals and such.

if you going to paint it anyway don;t do the seals yet. it is way easier to paint without any of them on the car. saves on trying to tape neat. i stripped every seal off my car for painting even the brand new t top seals. i got lucky with em and right off they came no rips

Well, I would like to leave the seals as-is but there is no way I can do that. They leak really bad right now and the only thing that is going to save my new door panels and seats would be that new weatherstripping. I only need the window seal so that is all I am getting right now. I thought about prepping for paint and I wish I could have held out longer so I could have everything looking good AFTER I painted, but I dont think that going to happen with the window seals. Thanks though!
