Ok so I made a cover for my brakelight like I saw on the tech articles here. But mine was slighty different. I used the plastic stuff you use to cover flourescent lights, and put a sticker I made on the smooth side. Then a little spray paint and that's all I needed! dremelled it to fit, some double-sided tape and 2 screws.

Whaddaya think?

Awesome! Do you have a closeup shot of where you put the screws? Where did you get the material?

The screws are on the sides, hidden behind the lip of the cover. I didnt even really need them, because the cover held it on. And then there's a narrow line of double sided tape along the bottom.

I got the matereals from my hardware store. I just picked a piece of that plastic stuff you use to cover your flourescent lights with. I'll see if I can get a pic of it if you're still unlear. I didnt explain that very well lol. And the stickers I printed and cut out for free, and the paint was left over from a model Z28 I painted not too long ago.

[edit:] Oh, and the plastic piece I got, was about 2' x 5' long, and it was cracked in the middle so I got it for free!
(the kind with one smooth side and one textured side)

my light is a little loose...

i tried just tightening the screws on top but they are snug. It still moves around a little when you touch it. I was a little scared to take it off last night cause it was getting dark and I didn't want to start "another" project.

I give the brake light mod a thumbs up by the way. It looks great. Not trashy. just enough. i've got to do it myself!

Hmm, ok I have a few suggestions.. First of all, it's obviously a titch small, but that's ok. Get some double sided tape and run it along the new cover, just under the letters, or just above....or both. Alternatively, just off to the side you can get 2 small long black screws and put them through the new cover and a little into the lens.

Any of those methods will work for sure.

And I'm glad you like the mod!

ooh, ok, sorry. I got ya.

I think what you have to do is take off the cover, and there will be some bolts somewhere in there that you will need to tighten. Shouldnt be too hard at all.

How did you get the red color? I gotta do that while I've got the light taken apart.

The cover I made just goes overtop of the stock red lens. That way, it will look clear at a glance, with perhaps only a twinge of red in it, and when you hit the brakes, it will light up red because the lens behind it is still red.

Very good! I'm gonna try that tonight with the "IROC" letters like off of the car.

Thanks man!

I was looking at your cardomain site. i'm running my dual snorkle air cleaner with no hoses. i'm gonna try the dryer hose you used on yours until I have some more $$ for the hoses and stock intakes.

I think he was trying to say 'loser' and the joke is that your looking at his brake lights which means you are behind his car so 'you' in theory must have lost the race and therefore are the "LOSER"

Yup. Pretty much. Remember to try and use a piece of plastic like I did, that's only smooth on one side, because then it looks clear in the day, but still lights up red.

Nice car btw. You look about as old as I am lol.

edit: wow, same engine and tranny combo, too. Change the antenna to power, change the rims, remove the pinstriping and the door trim, and it looks almost exactly the same. Is that interior red with white down the middle?

Oh damn. 305q I just realized that your car has t-tops. Our cars aren't clones anymore, eventhough I still haven't found $5 to do the brakelight.

funny story!

i happened to see a piece of the perfect plastic lying on the floor in the doctors examining room the other day. it looked like it fell out of the flouresent light fixture. i had been sitting there waiting for the doctor a while and all of a sudden i had an angel on one shoulder and a devil on the other. the angel said "don't you dare break off a piece of that in here!". the devil replied "you're a dumb *** if you don't get that perfect piece of plastic to mod that '86 IROC!" soooo I jumped off the table, picked it up and it was the exact thing i needed. i proceeded to bend it to break off a piece and it made a loud CRACK as it broke. i shoved the piece in my backpack happy as hell about how good my brake light would look till i got home and the piece i broke off was about an half inch too short!

Not a bad mod! Looks a whole lot better than the plain old '86 third brake light...

Textured side out. That way, the smooth side, the painted one, is protected.

ohhh, man, that sucks. Maybe you can center it and just do something to the sides? hm...

Or, go to the hardware store and see if you can find a cover there, that has been broken. That's what I did, and they gave it to me for free.
