A different LS1 Swap?something for the Speed Freaks
A different LS1 Swap?something for the Speed Freaks
This is again a LS1 Swap but we are going another route!
Facts
92 Camaro ,LS1 2000 engine,
No aircon, no power strg, no Vats, manual brakes !
EMPTY Single Seater !1200KG w/o driver(race K-member with coil over,Moser 9” 4.11,[full cage>in works])
True Dual exhaust not seen before !
Ls1 will get a remote waterpump and equal long headers, new and larger cats
Its going to be a automatic trans!
Our race class rules
1. Licen plates
2. Front/taillites
3. exhaust sound level below 100 phone,
4. slicks are ok as long as they dont stick out!
5. all chassie mods are ok
Some Q´s :
1. How much weight for a LS1?
2. Does somebody have a pic of a stock 2001 ls1 with automatic trans from below
( would love to see the exhaust stock set up)!
3. Fuel pumps??Only Walboro ?what rate when a ATI is in our backhead already?
AFPR? What brand is good ,”cheap” and solid?
4. First drive it and the ripp it for a cam upgrade! Again swap cams when going with a ATI?
5. anyone with more cheap hop ups like egr pipe cutback?
6. Any company producing large cats out there ?
We do have freedom in putting the cat/cats in a different location....will they still be doing there job then?
(warm up time / os sensor reading delay?)
7. We bought some ls1 way back can some decode the numbers?
Was sold as 99 Z28 CPU and harness number:serv no 09354896 cwjp + hdw no 16220610
8. Powerglide LS1 users? ANY? Any kit do mount a elec pick up?
9. 460 LE or 480LE? We ow have a 460Le! How much HP will these 2 take?
0. a guy named Magnus over at www.LS1Tech.com in the Conversion/Hybrid Forum.
He has some wiring info that.....Magnus could not find him!HELP?
Empty car (no interior lite,no aircon or other stuff) wiring easier?
1. ATI only get the blower and save money do to our diff belt set up (no air,no power,no waterpump)?
2. Is there some easy to read user info about the different ATI Blowers and there usage?
3. As 600 HP and 9psi of boost are limits for the stock LS1 what ATI will make sense!
4. The car will have a Intel pent 4 onboard pc somebody already using one to pull ls1 edit data?

esus man that sound like something out of monster garage but a total performer vehicle. The kind of power you will be making will get you in a magazine or something. I recall seeing a setup on here who actually made it to either Pontiac High Performance or gm high tech. It was a blown blue LS1 with twin turbo. Maybe i can find this. Ok no luck but i just read a real long post on a bunch of people trying to out do each other on cars or just being jealous. I found it humorous. I wish more people had Ls1's in thirdgens, not i own a 99 Trans am with an ls1. Doh Someday i will get an Ls1.http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=140614
Theres the link. Im sure its been covered but i found it entertaining. I couldn't find the one i was looking for.
Anyway back to my point more LS1's in thirdgens. I want to get some good results with my L98 and see how far I can take her. Not many mods yet, but It has begun. I think im in for a long haul.

The Set up is nice and i like that blower much more room between the rad and engine!mississing the cats though...didnt like the 1/4 result but i guess he was missing some slicks that day...!

hawk's car ran very traction limited 12.7s when the LS1 was completely stock! The stiff WS6 suspension is probably holding the 1/4 times back. I rode in the car shortly after he swapped the motor in, and it was awesome! Haven't gotten a rid in it since he swapped on the blower, but i'll see if I can talk him into it next time I'm in Sc.
Well he mentioned traction problems and i wonder what tires he used? Speartech first rollout times were better....MHHHHMMM!
Hawk stated that he´ll post new blower times so lets wait on that!
Compared to the Speartech wht Ls1 hybrid Hawk has less weight on the suspension side!
I would love to see a scale read out on both cars!
Any LS1 3rd gen supercharger websites with "empty" + tricked out fbodys???????????????????????????????????????????????

heres speartechs latest track runs that ive seen: http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=226028
Started stripping the Motor yesterday! Evenso lite compared to old GM parts off went the Waterpump, Powerstrgpump and altenator!Parts we dont need on our swap or that will be placed in different locations.
Silly that you have to loosen the altenator and swing it down to remove the long Motormount bolt. This is only a left Hand issue!
GM PLS ...the Motormount is as heavy as a "10pds" weight in gym...the vette always seem to get better parts (aloy)...mhmm!
Being kind of new everything got off easy!
I read to my surprise that there is no Crankshaft / Dampner key to the Crankshaft???? Is this true for only "old"/early LS1 motors?
Can someone post the cheapest LS1 motormounts / 4L60E transmounts price on the market, Please!
I am asking this because there is a LS1 engineadapter on the market that will mount to the old style mounts .
We are making space to get the Camaro over into a better work bay and after always working proper to remove the Tunnelram monster motor and 5 speed.
Took the last weeks to check cams and acc parts and i guess there was only a massive price drop on the Ls1 obd software
market! Still no headers for LS1 /3rd gens that we can use on this mega slam car!
The hooker longtube would act as a carjack on this slammer and the shorties do look like a design *****!
Again we can feel from the prices for LS1 parts that the US economy is in good works compared to Germany!
But the german illness in economie will give us a chance to finally get a german Superbike pro exaust builder to look at our header Phantasies that are based on a very low 3rd gen and race/space provinding K-member like sold from AJ and others!
GM is selling a header flange set for a LS1 engine for only 20$!!!!!
The pic is a new racing intake ...nothing for us (a magnacharger thats not eating front space is the way to go>see speartech/hawks) but for the Ls1 swapper a nice new product!
Is someone using the new ls1 power coils from msd? or the Agostino Racing Engines coil remover pack?
Up to the pics and like always feel free to post news and ya 50ct to the LS1 topic!

Hi ! Didnt know you got coil overs and a race k-member!
Then we are in the same boat!
The idea behind all those parts for us to get the car lite, low and fast...looking at the "Hawk" car we would like to see a pic with the car on a hoist and see how "low" the headers come!
Looking at the rest of the Hawk exhaust .....its too low
hanging for us!
Rember that Hawks car is a 6 speed...i guess the 6 Speed is not so wide as a automatik unit?
The whole thing gets easier when we test drop the LS1 in the 3rd gen to let the super bike guru have a look how much space there is!
After cutting several Fbodys to trash them we always did test cut some of them to get a better view of the floor panels and it was then always a discussion how far we would go to alter floor pans to get a optimum dual exhaust system...with the Ls1 the challenge is on again!
WE do have emissions laws but they differ alot from those in the US! Nobody cares about the exhaust as long as you have a straight sniffer result ....need cats....exhaust version like the viper side exhaust are forbidden ..the Mercedes Benz sukkkers are the last in germany to pass that with there SLR Monster!
That means get: a stainless, dual big monster(or big race cats) cat, full lengh header dual pipe systhem that is not louder as 100 phone!
To the header i woul like to see a good and hard talk like debate on 3rd gen header design on this board the pic below shows one that seems to be equal long too! Also love the collector style....as more people swap ls1 into 3rd gens the market will react so its too early to jump on something that like the hooker is a compromise.....The price for those made headers is 1700$ and the owner will put the ls1 in a GT class racer my buddy told me the car looked like a panoz....its twin turbos bursting power to the max hahahah!
That ls1 coil relocate pack is not fitting ya 3rd gen????
Lucky us throwing all those "caddyoptions " that steal only space for those nice parts out!
Guess you have the Air can on the right and the charcoal canister on the left???????But still there should be space left to put the coils like on the 4th gen pic!
Checked Hawk for the headers and i guess they wait till a market shows up....??

My car project started out tame but my buddy with a shop said "If we are doing it we should go all out". So he is going to help with a few parts and turn it into a shop car.
My car is ging to be a 6 speed but I can't imagen the auto being that much bigger.
My problem is that the engine is not in the car but it did show up last week. I am trying to get all my parts together so we can get this thing wrapped up before spring. I have a set of billet cover coming with out provisions to mount the coil packs to them so I need to find a new home for them.
The headers in the pic look good but they seem to be mid length headers and not LT. I could be wrong.
Take a look at these LTs. They dont seem to hang down that low.
Now the rest of it is a little to low but that can be fixed.
Well let me know what you guys are working on for LTs because having two built might be cheeper than one set.

are thoes custom long tubes?
heh, im going to be looking for a set of LS1-3rdgen longtubes in a couple months...
i have a friend with a set of hooker longtubes.. i plan on barrowing them to see if they'll be close to fitting, but it would be nice to have a reasonably priced alternitive.... by reasonable i mean production, same as 4thgen price.

Would love to see a hooker ls1 on a 3rd gen from below!
Well this is what i was saying do we need a LOOOOOONG Hooker ?Or just a optimum mid or what ever?
Long tubes
ower..really? near the trans... head problems at the collector spot??install a pain in da .....!
short / mid : low on power? easy to install!
i am really not sure if this is not a story for micheal moore hahah!
Yeah burn we are taking it slow no need to run cause some other toys are there to drive and german winters do suck!
Seems that JBA wants 680 $ or so ....think of the pipe price and go drink a beer!hahahah!
We´ll start with a LS1 Header Flange which everybody can by ad
GM!14-20 $ and go from there!
12480130 Header Flange, LS1 or LS6 (Pic: http://www.sallee-chevrolet.com/Gen_...s/12480130.jpg)
These steel header flanges are a great way to start a fabricated set of Gen 3 headers for a race car or street rod. This flange is for stock exhaust port location.

The LS1s love the LTs. My vote is LT and I don't care how hard they are to install or if we need tubular K-members because I already have them.
If you saw my list of parts you would understand why I want them so bad. No use in having a topend that breaths if I cant get the exhaust out.
"think of the pipe price and go drink a beer!hahahah! " lol I might need to drink a few before I give the shop my credit card numbers before they start building them for me.
I bet by next year we will have a few more 10second thirdgens or at least realy low 11s!
My buddy asked me a few weeks ago "So you are putting all this money into your car but what will you do if it blows up in a few day after its finished?" I sat back and smiled then replied...I will push it into storage until I get enough to build a forged 408. In the back of my mind I was thinking 427 but I not telling him that.

Ok then let me call you burner from now on! LOL!
We dont see any problems with a tricky install cause we do have all tools like lifts, hoist and air comp tools but its always easier at the track in case stuff happens...
Need to get more reports about LS1 4th gen cars....always love the funny try outs from CHP or other US Magazins were header swaps are always done to check for power and at what rpm the power will show up!
Maybe someone can post some data about that in this thread!
Would love to see a Hooker LT and Edelbrock shortie in comparison!JBA is there anyone on this board running one?????
Also any "big cat" owners that run TTS or other cats and there comments!
There are only 4or 5 ls1 threads but they kept us pumping till 10pm yesterday nite to create some space in the shops as all membvers want to pull in with there cars to store them due to the ****ty wheater! at least we now have a spot to work on the engine and the project car!

A College Buddy ist working at the TÜV !90% of our members run car service shops or work for the car industrie!I worked for GM Germany.
TÜV? for the US guys: in germany you need to turn in you car every two years for a compl car check this is like a siffer hard core test but "just" for the whole car!All parts changed from stock must have a testreport similar to the CARB approval sticker for the Ignition for excample!
The hardcore trip here is how to you get a test for a coil over suspension when back in 1991 we where the first and still are the only owners in germany/Europe with a coil over!We paid big time money to get our set ups thru the approval!
In easier words : get a 2005 C6 Corvette and but a 454 old Blower dual carb engine in that brand new car and try to get thru a Cali registration!
When we changed our MC bike status to a CC back in 86 it was clear that we need to keep the brotherhood status to make living in this Land called Germany a bit easier!
So from that standpoint it was always easier to get things going!
Help is that we do have 4 race tracks in front of our hood that makes things easier and you meet other racers at the GT races who help or pass tech or give a adress who might help!
The swiss border is about 1100km away from us hahah!
My wife did work at Modena in a big red company so i know how
fr it is to drive pass you to cross the border to italy.
We are the number one force in 3rd gen cars with car mag reports and all other bla bla!
With the support from our german chapters this LS1 conversion is again a step to catch up with the US boys!

Just a little info on my 01 Z. It is a stock short block LS1 with a decent heads and cam setup. NO power adder and it runs 10.80's in the 1/4 mile. It weighs 3330lbs with the wife in it(her car and she races it). It has a stock 4l60e with a YANK pt4400 torque converter. It also still has the stock 10 bolt rear with 4.10 gears. It has quite a few suspension upgrades, but we still run on the stock torque arm. It has alot more potential if i would take some weight of the front of the car and dial in the suspension some more, but i am ready to get to work on my third gen/LS1 project.
My third gen is going to be alot like German's. should be down to aprox 2900lbs with no uneeded anything, with some nitrous.

Cool good to see more ls1 swaps!fast numbers on ya 4th gen! Like the "smog leagel cali exhaust"!LOL!
I have been searching the net for 2 days know getting more cat info and also getting some LS1 header stories ....The C5 ls1 boys are really shooting fast with good headers also found some race cat flownumbers.....from a cat shoot out on install university..this takes the guessing out of the parts and stops with mares like random is the number one...well!
Can someone get some light in here:
A guy at our track running a jet car sells cats :400 CPSI ( cells per square inch 1 square inch ist 6,452cm˛ )
This is the data for the effectivnes of the flow thru the cat??
How would i calculate the CPSI to CFM?
Will call him tomorrow and post what he says
I did search in our HOT Rod mags and bla bla and found a report about the fastest stock 4th gen camaro from automotive school of whatever but cant find a website??!!
It ´s a 9sec car ...ooops on motor only!
cant wait for the weekend to come and check some more stuff and hope a can borrow a "butcher" (what say use to weigh pigs after they have cut them hahahah)scale to finally end the BS talk about Ls1 weight comparo....!
This would also give me more infos for the coils in front!
Still have that nitemare on my mind when we finished a tourer 3rd gen (also no unnessary stuff in or on it) and 7 hrs ahead of a car show swapped the "paint " rim set up to the 16" GTA just to see that the frontend looked like a Monster truck hahahahahah!
snow came down so its time to lock the doors and play on the ls1 on winternites.
As a wish for X-mas i thing it woul be a good idea to put all those LT1/LS1 related threats into a own section ..just like the TPI guys have there "page"!

thats basicly what the engine swap forum is.

1200GK is and was possible!
Burn you might read in the ls1 forum: they toasted the lsx 90mm intake...a sponsor there is selling the new LS2 dont asked me on price but the whole forum was on one vote :cheap as a** and same data like the lsx!
Burn how about the cat cfm thing i wrote or are you deleting the cats???

Should be able to get lower than that. The thirdgens are lighter to start with so take off 100lbs with the engine swap. Take of 40-50lbs with a tubular K member. Take off a few more with tubular a-arms front and lighter control arms in the rear. Pitch the damn front suspention and go coil over with power rack and lose 30-40lbs more. Well you get the idea.

if you ask me, the LSx is overpriced... ESP when you include the throttlebody.
and the LS2 intake hasnt been proven better either.... everyones basing the claim off the huge inlet, but theres no proof yet... the only "proof" so far is the guy who swapped it and went slower trap speeds... but if you read carefully, it was on a diffrent day. with diffrent tires... and a few other smaller mods..
and his compression test makes me think he has oil leaking into his "abnormally high" compression cyl..
the infos at LS1tech.com if you want to search it....
in my option, its best to sit back and wait.... i mean, you dont even have the motor in the car yet... just keep the stock or LS6 intake on it for now, and then once the LS2 has proven itself one way or the other, get that.

The cats will be killed!
I do have a 3in in and out cat for my Stealth TT sitting at home. If I need to I can get another one and have them installed after the LT and dumps.
I saw the LS2 intake stuff but to tell you the truth I got my setup cheaper. If you also look on that site some one ran the LS2 and lost a bunch of HP.
I can't make sense out of that but after hearing that some of the LS2 intake are not bonded together correctly causing the top and bottems parts to not line up I think I made the better choise.

For any one waiting for parts I hear that Kenne Bell will have a SC kit out next spring for the Vette. A New cobra put out around 700hp with the same setup so stay tuned for some crazy power number next summer.
