You can send a PayPal donation to dtimmerm@thirdgen.org, or send an email to that same address requesting a mailing address if you don't have PayPal.

Honestly I wouldn't know... I wasn't around before the ads came about. It sounds like a bunch of people have donated to the site back in the day, you included. Maybe you should demand a stylish new title from Dirk so you can be like me.

Many "old guys" donated a small hill of cash "back in the day" to acquire new equipment, T1 line, software, etcetera, to get the site up and running again. We didn't ask for nor expect any special treatment. At that time, the "solution" was to incorporate banner advertisements to generate the capital necessary to keep the site up and running, support and upgrade hardware and software as necessary, and never have the problem again. There were also TGO items made available for sale to generate additional capital. Most everyone felt at that time that having to stare at and work around advertisements was an acceptable solution to prevent future problems. Many of the advertisers are long-time sponsors, and probably aren't in it just for the advertising exposire, but to "help out" a good technical site.
Evidently, these revenue sources were inadequate.
I think that may be what Ed E. is referring to.
As for the advertisers, I'm guessing that they don't appreciate being associated with a site that promotes and allows trolling, useless, post-whoring members that offer nothing but numbers and pretty signatures which tend to detract from their advertisement boxes. That could be the reason for this new cash infusion, or maybe not. I'm probably wrong. Still, I'll bet your one-time contribution is insignificant compared to what the sponsors pay for banner advertisements. Thank goodness for their support. And think about that the next time you consider posting some useless drivel. Werd, dudes...
If you think that donating money exempts you from the rules, open your eyes a little. It's not even working for companies like Enron and Halliburton. Some of those guys are being "banned" right into jail cells. Don't assume anything.

either way, thanks for the surprise Dirk
also if you could make a wish list of items needed for the site. maybe some resourceful or "better off" members could help you "aquire" them?
I don't know if this is a bad idea or not, Im just thinking out loud.

If you feel that the moderators aren't doing their jobs in keeping out post ****** and trolls, feel free to talk to Dirk, IROC, and anyone else you know in the higher ups around here. We bust our asses to make sure this place runs smoothly, considering we are all here to help in our spare time for free, and as a whole, yes it does run very smoothly. I doubt you'll find any of the admins or mods will disagree with that. We deal with everything from daily new members to Dirk being gone nearly a year, and while it gets frustrating behind the scenes at times, this site runs very well.
I am the newest moderator here as far as I know (unless someone new is on the Classifieds forums), and there are always new members coming in, and there will always be troublemakers. Most learn the rules and get a hold of themselves and some get kicked out for good. But have some respect; being around here longer than anyone else doesn't give you the right to go bashing me, some troublemakers that were given a second chance, and others who have donated money just cause you have your own personal history with the site.
I do appreciate the history lesson, though. I like knowing about this site, cause it's a great place.

Meanwhile, everyone here is trying to help out Dirk in whatever way we can, not just the advertisers, and you're bashing down on me and everyone else that had the good heart to offer some of their own hard-earned cash this time around. If you have a problem with any of us getting "special recognition," take it up with Dirk, because he put those titles under our names without anyone's knowledge. None of us asked for anything in return either. I emailed Dirk the day the site was back up with just a status report and suggested putting up a paypal address because I wanted to donate. He didn't even respond to any emails I sent him; he put up the paypal address, I sent my money, and that was it.

I think that the TGO Supporter is a wonderful idea. If you donated to TGO(DIRK) without knowing there would be a reward, you deserve it! I personally thank those individuals.

Anyone that donated back in the day and wants to be recognized for it now can PM me. I'll change your title if you want.

Maybe if Dirk has a way to track it, he could recognize them to. But, I don't think if "TGO Supporter" isin't under your name, that you didn't support TGO. Let's be honest, you don't need a title to know your a "TGO Supporter".

I'd rather we got rid 'TGO Supporter' (and post counts) or just have the option to customize the user title like many other boards.

With sig pics now, those have gotten out of hand quite a few times. Remember Mike's? (aka Shane aka Platinum aka therckid, aka kidthrch aka bubble boy aka...)
His name is Mike??? lol ...I have no idea; I always thought he was a mod that needed to vent and see how long he could go before getting canned.
I'm for removal of sig pics and limiting the length of entries on the car info. As you can see, I currently abuse that feature.
