Headlight mod for Trans Ams

I have an idea for all those who have ta's 85-90 who dont like the flip up headlights....i was thinking about taking the nose cover and where the slots are that contain the foglamps....opening the slots up just a bit more to fit a high powered (square or cirlular) headlight or whatever that could provide enough light to be considered a healight and wire them up to your fogs so that you just drive with the four lights across the bottom

i was also thinking of either "smoking" or cutting blackouts to go over the lights so that the car will look normal and stock until i turn the lights on and you just see the two extra lights

\Here is close to what im talking about on a 91-92 bird nose

now i know that some think that it wouldnt be bright enough but in the pics where the guys is looking at his garage it sure looks bright enough for me to see whats ahead of me
(avoid super dark roads where high beams are necessary)

well i took a closer look at my nose and i see that its pretty much impossible to do with how little space there is the only other place i could think of that would look halfway decent was right above the fog light in the center section of space on the nose but i have a feeling that a headlight right there just wouldnt work too well

do you guys think that with that last idea and a black out lens covering the headlight you could get a HID high bright headlight and even with the blackout it would shine through well enough to be used as a headlight?

yeah i know but ive never read one about where i was going with it and i wanted to see what others thought about the possibility of it...but it seems like quite a challenge

would two foglights create enough light to sub for headlights...im thinking of putting two extra light sources next to the fog lights in the bottom of the nose...cutting the nose down that slot on each side...and placing a blackout on top so it will appear stock from 5 feet + and the only real problem im thinking im gonna run into is creating enough light...

what size are the headlights that go on the 82-92 camaros??? are they the same size as the 85-90 foglights...i believe they are 4X6 which is quite a bit bigger than our foglights...im just trying to find a way to create enough light and be a good size to fit behind the nose and still send most of the light through the slot

also what size are the bulbs in our foglights im thinking with some brighter (as bright as possible) lights plus two additional light sources of some type hopefully headlights/headlight bulbs..i can do this and eliminate the popup headlight

IIRC, most states place a requirement on how high the headlight is from the road. I'm guessing that the bumper might be too low. Not sure, but something to check into locally before you go cutting up a perfectly good bumper.

Whoa. Someone linked my headlight mod thread! Cool.

My headlights are too low. (not for vision, for legality). With the h9 bulbs they're brighter than hell. The problem with the foglight area is that not much besides the foglight housings fit there. And they don't provide a good beam pattern for use as regular headlights. They're just down and to the sides so no matter how bright it is, as long as it's in the stock fog housing it's not going to be a good pattern.

The website I got my headlights from offers two things you could use to mount in the stock location.

HID Micro DE Driving light That'll be more than bright enough but you won't have high beams and it'll be round in the square hole. If you could make a cover to go over it to make it more square it might not look that bad.


Bi-Xenon 90mm HID headlamp. The Bi-Xenon ones will allow you to have both high/low but I don't know if it'll fit in the stock cutout.

There was a TA on ebay years ago that had a gfx set that looked like stock, just lower by about 2" all around. I know if you do a search you can find pictures. The owner then took the front foglight area and enlarged it to fit two cop-style spotlights. That looked good as well. Wish I still had pictures of that car. Beautiful dark purple color.

Every headlight mod has something cool to it in my book. Some just need more work. Go for it!
