From time to time, the question is asked about a replacement for the stock mechanical fuel pump, including a return. Carter makes M6626. Their website doesn't have much info, but Summit says it's rated for 120 GPH free-flow, 5.5-6.5 psi. I never trust the Summit pictures, but partsamerica.com is usually reliable, and it shows a return line. And, of course, the Federal Mogul/Carter site comes up with that p/n when you ask it for the application (at least, it came up for the '82, '86 & '87 LG4 applications that I checked).

I have no idea.

The stock replacement AC pump that I got from Checker (back when they still carried AC parts) has fed my souped-up 305 just fine, and it's been installed since 1999. Of course, no more than the Carter costs, I'll probably go with it when the 350 goes in (Summit says should ship by 5/13 if I order it today).

 

Ordered 5/9, shipped 5/24, arrived yesterday. Looks like the right thing, guess we'll see how it behaves when the 350 is in and broken in.

Any reason to buy an AC fuel pump or the Carter replacement over an AutoZone stock replacement (Wells, I think)?

I recently had to replace mine and so far it has done the job well. This is a stock LG4, though.

You got lucky and found some old stock! Carter was a damn fine
product until Federal-Mogul bought them a few years ago.

 

It was probably ACF that did them in more than Federal Mogul.

 

Identical to stock. The return picks up on a different point on the bottom cover than the stock one did, but they are all pointed in the same direction and end up in the same place.

As for the old stock, apparently Summit had to order it from Carter directly. It wasn't something they stocked, but it comes up if you do a search on the p/n on their website.
