Have you painted or powder coated your wheels?
Hey guys I bought these gold gta wheels for my 91 bird now im selling that so i want to put them on my 90 formula. I don't want to leave the wheels gold though. The car is red and I am trying to do a red and black thing. I was wondering if anyone has painted their GTA wheels or had them powdercoated? Does anyone have some pics? Please help!

You painted them with out removing the clear coat? Most people use an aircrft aluminum stripper to take the clear coat, then sand it a little bit, then paint with what ever kind of spray paint or any other paint you want.

My GTAs were natiral/grey when I got them, but I wanted black ones. So I painted them about 18 months ago. Used Professional Grade gloss black Rustoleum. Just did many light coats from various directions to get down in the spokes. I think they look great, and no ones knows I painted them myself unless I tell them, then they can't believe it. By the way, they're on my daily driver, too. No chipping, cracking, or paint problems on them at all.
Here's a pic.....

Do yourself a favor and buy a piece of cardboard (non-corrugated) to make an insert. It keeps you from going insane from trying to tape the line just right. I little light math will tell you how long to cut it to...
After just pull the ring out and admire you're handywork...
I lined the edge of my insert with a small piece of tape to keep the carboard from soaking up paint and making the edges 'fuizzy'.
When painting you'll want to apply mild pressure to the insert just to make sure pint doesn't get under it.
Also, it will leave a 3/32" bare spot around the edge just like where the OE wheels were machined after painting.
Just my opinoin though...

So, you're looking to do something like this.......
Aircraft stripper, many, many times to get everything out of the laces, coat of primer, and 4 coats of black w/gold flake....
After you strip them, might as well take out any scratches or curb rash, and polish them to almost crome..... Thats what I did, have almost 40 hrs. in on them, but they look damn good to me.....

I painted a set with Engine Paint. When i had got them someone had already started to prep them for painting. I figured the engine paint would hold up well with the heat from the brakes.
Never did get to see them on the car though, as the guy I was building the Iroc for turned into a real piece of work the year he was in Germany, so I gave him his Iroc back in pieces.

from a durability standpoint youd be better off with powdercoating. But itll cost a lot more

If that's what you are referring to, yes, I taqped it off. I used some 8" paper, taped an edge (of the paper) and masked off the backside. I didn't do anything elaborate as it is just the backside of the wheel. The pictures I posted were examples I had saved. The wheel was painted less tires and on sawhorses prior to the pictures.

There are pleanty of paints out there just as durable at PC... and well more expensive (as a materials/labor cost).

OK... I've got my materials. All I need now is time.
I'll photo-document as I go.

half way done!
I got everything together and then yanked a wheel. After that, I took the time to clean with soap and water really good, I took some sand paper to the inside of the rim, and then masked the heck out of the wheel.
(note the required thirst quencher)
Multiple thin coats, 2-3 clear coats on top of one primer coat. Hope it is durable.

AFTER:

There, back to the orginal color scheme.
