it seems that as soon as it too the grit past 800 they turned dark like balck. and it was not able to wipe off. i resanded them with 800 after 12-1500, and they went back but they are nowhere near brite enough to compare to chrome. Any idea why, did i do some thing wrong?????

Any way that you can put a pic of that on here. Sounds kinda odd. Well you can do what I am doing to my rims. If they are aluminum you can use some paint stripper then use some clear coat to put back on there.

Sanding alone will not polish a wheel.
Not sure if you're familiar with these two articles but, they might help you out

well, it seems that if i sand further than 800 grit it turns black, and does not wipe off, the higher the grit the blacker it gets.
If it helps at all i am working on a friend of mines porsche 944 phone dial rim, it is aluminum so i figure it should work the same way???

Aluminum WILL leave a black residue. Try using some mothers on the rim after sanding it. Im sure it will take out the black. Oh BTW: no matter how much you polish your rim with metal polish, it will ALWAYS turn black. Its just how aluminum reacts!
man are you useing a air sander or something.....if you are it produces to much heat and you are just scorching it...i started with 600...then i wet sanded with everything else after that...when i got to the 2000 i went over it wet...then with the same piece of paper i used blue magic and polished it with that........looks like a mirror:rockon:

I used mothers and then waxed them with a car wax as a protective coat. After taking a damp towel and slightly wiping the wax it looks awesome.
The black you're getting is oxidation of the aluminum.
